The 2003 edition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic will take place tonight, Sunday, January 19, 2003 at Los Angeles City College. Be sure to be on hand to see three of the last six California State JC Champions play in two solid games. At 6:00pm the Compton College Tartars will play against the Mt. SAC Mounties, and at 8:00pm the Los Angeles City College Cubs, featuring top point guard play from Jarrell Blassingame, a nationally recruited player, as well as USF-signee Julian Sensley (6'-9" F), as well as Romel Beck (6'-7" F/G), Duwan Rice (5'-10" Fr. PG), and former Long Beach State player Anthony Davis (6'-5" SG). Both games will take place at the LACC Men's Gym, which is located at the northeast corner of the LACC campus, immediately adjacent to the running track and the baseball fields on Vermont Avenue, just north of the Hollywood Freeway exit on Vermont.
LACC of the South Coast Conference's North Division, and a state semifinalist last season, continues with Coach Mike Miller's winning ways this season and is currently 19-2 and ranked the No. 2 team in SoCal and No. 4 overall in the State. LACC has scored 1,674 points this season with its high-powered offense, and boasts a defense that has given up the second fewest number of points by all SoCal JUCO teams this year (for those interested, Irvine Valley has given up the fewest points in the region, about 300 fewer than LACC which is at 1304).
In the first game, Foothill Conference power Mt. Sac, which is currently ranked No. 6 with a record of 16-6, will take on Compton of the South Coast Conference-South Division, which has struggled a bit this season to a record of 8-10, but within the victory column have been some impressive wins over good teams like Bakersfield, Cuesta, Pasadena, East LA, Moorpark and Trade Tech.
Again, all of the games will take place at LACC tonight. The gym is located at the corner of Willowbrook and Vermont (just a block south of Santa Monica Blvd.). If you need driving directions, try this map of the surrounding area, and once you're there, remember to park either on Heliotrope or on Willowbrook. See you there....
