CIF-SS Boys Div. I-AA Bracket:
Wild Card Game Results--(Feb. 20, 2003)

As we noted, this division has a 32-team bracket with 7 "Wild-Card" games which were played last night to determine which teams will matchup on Friday in the first round.  The Wild Card games were "play-in" games, and the winner of each of these games advances into the first round slots indicated in the bracket which follows.   Here are the scores and details of the wild card games, followed by the updated bracket.

Game A:  

Downey 76, El Rancho 56

Game B:  

AB Miller @ Quartz Hill

Game C:  

Peninsula 80, Long Beach Jordan 66

Game D:  

Aliso Niguel 49, Esperanza 47

Game E:  

Santa Ana 71, Paramount 64

Rancho Cucamonga 75, Moreno Valley 63

Dana Hills 64, Hawthorne 61

Downey 76, El Rancho 56 --Larry Cunningham scored 24 points to lead host Downey (16-12) over El Rancho (15-11). Downey's Uriahn Barragan added18 points.

Quartz Hill 79, AB Miller 78 (2OT)-- Byron Manuel came off the bench and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead Quartz Hill over A.B. Miller.   The Rebels (15-11) will travel to Lynwoodon Friday.  Senior center B.A. Harrell led Quartz Hill with 26 points, and senior guard Andrae Johnson added 15. With 1.6 seconds left in the first overtime and scored tied at 73, A.B. Miller's Ragland Cole drove into the lane for a layup, and Harrell rejected his shot.  AB Miller was led by Jeremiah Ward who finished with a game-high 32 points.

Peninsula 80, Long Beach Jordan 66--Shawn Weinstein scored 34 points, Kurt Graber added 16, and Mike Anderson scored 15 points for visiting Peninsula (14-14) over host Long Beach Jordan which finishes the season at 14-14.

Aliso Niguel 49, Esperanza 47-- Michael Roll scored 20 points in the wild-card victory for the visiting Wolverines (12-13).  His two free throws with 26 seconds remaining put Aliso Niguel up by four points and provided the margin of victory for visiting AN, which plays at Oxnard in a first round game on Friday.   Roll made three of his four three-pointers and scored 11 of his 20 points in the third quarter to help the Wolverines overcome a 29-11 halftime deficit. Austin Schwab had 13 points and Terrence Green had 10 points and seven assists for the Wolverines. Mark Lovein had 14 points for Esperanza (14-13).

Santa Ana 71, Paramount 64--Tim Tripp's 23 points led the host Saints (15-11) in a wild-card game.

Rancho Cucamonga 75, Moreno Valley 63--details of the game were not immediately available.

Dana Hills 64, Hawthorne 61--Andrew Kerns had 22 points and Lorca Ghanbari made five three-pointers and had 21 points for visiting Dana Hills (17-10). Hawthorne ends the season 15-10.

All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office.  Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host].  Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
