CIF-SS Boys Division I-A Bracket:
Wild Cards & One 1st Round--(Feb. 20, 2003)

This is a 32-team bracket with four "Wild-Card" games which were played last night, Wednesday, Feb. 19.    There was also one first round game, Yucaipa vs. Canyon Springs, which was also played last night, and with the win, Canyon Springs effectively receives a first round bye on Friday night, having already advanced to the second round.

We've got the scores and details of all the games played last night, followed by the updated bracket so you can see just where each team will be playing in the first round on Friday.   Here are the Wild Card game scores and details:

Game A:

Thousand Oaks 59, Hueneme 50

Game B:

Temescal Canyon  90, Corona 88 (2OT)

Game C:

Canyon (Canyon Country) 68, Hoover 67

Game D: Chaparral 68, Trabuco Hills 60

Thousand Oaks 59, Hueneme 50--Kain Lindgren scored 14 points and Tyler Carr added 12 points to lead visiting Thousand Oaks (13-14).

Temescal Canyon 90, Corona 88 (2OT)--Dylan Petty banked a 3-pointer off the glass to beat the buzzer Wednesday night,  giving the Titans' (17-12) a 90-88 double-overtime victory over Corona to advance to the first round on Friday.  Petty's shot was the only 3-pointer of the game for Temescal and came on a broken play after Corona's Kevin Morrow missed two free throws with four seconds left that could have put the game away for the Panthers.  Petty was the intended receiver on a long inbound pass that was tipped by a Corona player, but he came up with the loose ball around midcourt and hit the off-balance shot for the win.  Petty scored eight of his 13 points in overtime, and Channing Corral scored six of his nine in overtime. Garrett True also scored six, all in the first overtime. Nigel Kelly had 10 points in the fourth, to finish with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Larsen led the Panthers with 26 points, including 11 after the end of the third quarter, and Chris Almasy added 23.

Canyon 68, Hoover 67-- Despite trailing 39-38 at the half, Canyon opened the second half with a 13-4 run, and was kept in it by the scoring of Josh Shirley, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, which made up for the scoring of Nate Longshore, who had 14 of his 20 in the first half.  Hoover closed to within 68-65 with 23 seconds to play after trailing by as many as 8 points in the second half.  Hoover had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but a 30-footer by Armen Baghdasarian bounced off the back of the rim.  Hoover was led by center Hagop Mankikian with 20 points.  Canyon (16-10) will play at Glendora, the No. 2 seed.

Chaparal 68, Trabuco Hills 60--Host Chaparral sophomore guard Dwain Williams, who finished with 28 points, sank all 12 of his free-throw attempts ---- including eight in the fourth quarter ---- to lead the Pumas to a 68-60 win over Trabuco Hills.  Chaparral (17-11) will travel to Newhall Hart (22-4) on Friday night. The had a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and Mike Hassen scored the game's first six points and Brent Chodola connected on three 3-pointers to give the Pumas a double-digit lead.  Chaparral had its biggest lead of the game midway through the second quarter when Ryan Schaller sank two free throws to give the Pumas a 16-point advantage, 31-15.  Schaller came off the bench in the first quarter after center Manuel Montano and forward Princeton Joshway got into early foul trouble. Schaller scored eight points in the first half and finished with 12.  The Mustangs (13-15) fought back to cut the lead to four, 34-30, late in the second quarter on a putback by Jeff Mee. Chaparral answered with a 3-pointer from Bert Whitington and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Williams to make it 40-30 at halftime.  Williams scored 21 of Chaparral's 28 second-half points to keep the Pumas in front of Trabuco Hills, which got 28 points from Brian White.

And, as we mentioned, there was also one first round game, Yucaipa vs. Canyon Springs, which was played last night as well.  Here's what happened:

Canyon Springs 79, Yucaipa 52-- Canyon Springs (23-4), ledf by Arizona State-signee Tron Smith's 22 points and sophomore Andre McGee's 21 points, easily handled first round opponent Yucaipa which finishes the season at 13-13.  Richard Cobbs added 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cougars and Brandon Woods finished with 13.  Yucaipa was led by Matt Brown with 14 points and Mike Price's 12 points and 6 rebounds.  Kevin Adams hit three three-pointers in the first half, but was shut down as the Canyon Springs offense doubled him in the second half.  There were a few bright spots though for Yucaipa:  They managed to outrebound Canyon Springs 36-31.
