Division II-A boys bracket

A few years ago, this would have been considered a dream semifinals....Mater Dei vs. Redondo Union. Somehow all the years we can remember that never happened and those two teams were never in the same division. Now they are. But even today, it's still a pretty big headline game, and in the other half of the semifinal bracket, Brea Olinda vs. Mayfair isn't exactly chopped liver either. Unfortunately, the quarterfinals were not as close as many expected, and Mater Dei wound up winning by 30, Redondo finally managed to defeat a Russell Otis-coached Dominguez team (even if Jim Nielsen couldn't be on the bench, we're pretty certain he enjoyed it), and Brea Olinda walloped San Marcos to advance. The only "alternate site" that has yet been selected is Sonora for the Brea vs. Mayfair game. When Redondo figures out where to hold the game, we'll post it here.

Quarterfinal Scores and Details (in bracket order)-- Games Played Friday, February 28:

Mater Dei 89, Victor Valley 59 -- University of Minnesota-signee Wesley Washington led Mater Dei (29-2) with 16 points, while Princeton-bound teammate Harrison Schaen added 15 points and 14 rebounds. Mater Dei outscored visiting Victor Valley (20-8) in the second quarter, 30-3.

Redondo 74, Dominguez 64 --Senior forward and Pepperdine-signee Wendell White scored 35 points and had nine rebounds and Kevin Ellison added 16 points to lead Redondo (18-11). Travon Free scored 26 points and had 16 rebounds for Dominguez (14-7). Junior guard Marcus Malone complimented Free on the perimeter, knocking down three 3-pointers en route to his 15 points.

Brea Olinda 68, San Marcos 40 --Stanford-bound Evan Moore had 32 points and eight rebounds and Brent Smith added 10 points and 12 rebounds for host and third-seeded Brea Olinda (25-3), which will play Mayfair in the semifinals Tuesday. San Marcos ends 17-10.

Mayfair 77, Burbank Burroughs 61 --Senior forward Dejon Prejean led all scorers with 21 points and D'Wayne Wright added 15 points to lead host Mayfair (22-7). Joey Paysinger had 16 points to pace Burbank Burroughs (14-15). The Monsoons had six players score in double digits. Utah-bound senior forward Justin Hawkins scored 13 points, senior center Chris Childress added 11 points and Brian McFadden contributed 10.
