If it's June, it's time for summer high school basketball.... Both the SCIBCA and the LA Watts Summer Games basketball tournaments will tip-off this weekend, as well as the Say No Classic College league on Sunday, so there will be no shortage of basketball events to attend....Oh, and there's also this little thing on TV known as the NBA Finals....not that anyone really cares about that....
This year's version of the LA Watts Summer Games will begin on Saturday at various gym sites around Los Angeles. Sponsored by the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce, the basketball tournament portion of the LAWSG (there are many other sports as well, including track & field, baseball, softball, volleyball, etc), is run by a dedicated group of volunteers, who deserve some special thanks and who have worked many hours to insure a quality tournament experience for the teams participating. This year the tournament will feature more than 128 boys and girls teams, more than 1200 players, at 16 different venues in a new, double-elimination tournament format. Unfortunately, it also conflicts from a scheduling point of view with the SCIBCA tournament, but that's just life in the city, as they say..... and it also means a ton of basketball will be played all over the Southern California region this weekend, which is very good news for all those who are starved for high school hoops.
