adidas elite level camp at FDU.
200+ top prospects

We promised to get some of the ABCD Camp stats which were sent to us posted here at SoCalHoops, and as we sometimes like to say when things are a bit hectic, better late than never.  We really haven't had time to post much of anything other than rosters and such, since we've been running back and forth between the Pumps' and Dinos' two camps.  But now with both the camps concluded today, it was a perfect opportunity to post some stats from ABCD.

ABCD officially ended last Friday.  The stats set forth below are not the final stats from the camp:  Rather, they represent only the player stats through the last full day of competition, which was  Thursday night.   There were games played on Friday prior to the camp All-Star games, so the final stats will be different.   In fact, we were informed that Arron Afflalo wound up being the leading scorer in the camp based just on the last two days performances.  Apparently he wasn't getting the ball much the first day and half, so he was switched to another team where he was very, very productive.   So again, the final stats will look different than what's set forth below.  Still, these should give you a pretty good idea of who did what during the heart of the competition at ABCD.

Two players from California didn't actually get to play because they were injured:  Devon Hardin who committed to Cal in the spring, and Titus Shelton (6'-7" Sr. F) from Bakersfield who injured his hip flexor the first day of the camp.  We're told by his high school coach that Titus will be playing with EBO this summer, whose brother also attended the ABCD junior camp as a 6'-5" 8th grader who will play guard next season for Bakersfield; both of them are the children of former NBA'er Lonnie Shelton.   You will also note that some players (Afflalo and Curtis Allen, just to mention two) are listed twice.  Again, this is evidently because they were switched to different teams during the camp and apparently, the computer system assumes they must be two different players (even though there was no change of jersey number).    So, if you really wanted to calculate their player ratings, you'd have to combine their totals from each listing.  We don't have the time or patience to do that, but feel free if you want to try.

Lastly, the "player rating" figure is explained below.  It's kind of complicated, and it gets even more complicated in terms of trying to figure out how to calculate it when it comes to the players who switched teams.   Suffice it to say, as we have several times already, these are only interim stats, not the final stats as of Friday....but they're better than nothing at the moment.

Finally, a word about Player Ratings: ABCD has contracted with a computerized stats service and the company uses a very sophisticated "real time" program with hand-held units, and there is a stat crew of two persons assigned to each game.  Not every stat in every game can possibly be recorded, but over the years we've found that they are remarkably accurate (of course, they are only as reliable as the people hired to take the stats each game, but the assuming the data is accurate, the program is very versatile). Stat reports can be printed for virtually every conceivable category and just about the only thing you can't get is a shot chart, and that's not because the stats computers won't record it, but simply because it would take more than the two stats people already working the machines to get info that detailed.  But as it is, things are pretty detailed, right down to what is known as a "player rating."  The actual formula for the player rating is rather complicated [(2 x FG Made = 3Pt FTG Made + AS +BL +OR) + (1.5x (DR +ST) + Total PTS + FT Made -(2 x TO) - (FT Missed + FG Missed + 3-Pt FG Missed /GP)].

Translated into English, what the formula above means is that the positive aspects of a player's games (points made, assists, blocks, and offensive rebounds) are counted a bit more heavily than are the negative aspects (turnovers, missed shots, etc), and the whole thing is then mathematically calculated, and one can then derive a single number for each player, which allows for some pretty interesting comparisons.  We don't mean to get carried away with this, because it really only measures how well someone performed at this camp, and hence it may or may not be an indicator of things to come in a player's college recruiting or his career... But it's significant that the players who are known to have played the best and who have the highest rating numbers are also the same ones who are predicted to have the most upside and are considered by most to be the better prospects.

Anyway, we thought you all would find these interesting....And they might be interesting to compare to last year's stats (which we had for the first day for both California players only,  as well as the top 10 leaders, the second day (California and top 10), and a variety of top 10 statistical leaders through the end of camp (e.g., Top 20 Assist LeadersTop 20 Steals Leaders, Top 50 Scorers, Top 50 FG Percentage Leaders, Top 3-Point FG Leaders, Top 50 Rebounders, and Top 25 Shot Blockers).  Unfortunately, we don't have all those stats for this year's camp at our disposal, nor do we have time to post them all even if we had them.

Some final thoughts:  The California players were among the most dominant at the camp this year, and we want to congratulate all of them.  This is not an easy camp to play at for some players.  Guys get the ball in their hands and they don't pass;  they shoot every time they touch it.   Much to the credit of guys like Andre McGee, who came into this camp with a reputation for jacking up shots just about every time he touches the ball, the reality is that he was also one of the top 10 assist leaders, indicating that not only was he an effective scorer, but he was also playing good team basketball and involving his teammates.  That's just one example though, and some players flourished, whereas others didn't.  ABCD isn't for everyone, nor does it pretend to be.  We hope that everyone had a good time.  See you there next year.
