The "Top 84 Game" was the first of the three all-star games to be held tonight at the Brethren Christian Warrior Center, and it featured some very good players. Not all the players who were named to the game participated, but about two-thirds of those listed were there. We didn't keep track of stats (who does at these types of games), nor did we really note which kids were playing with the "white" or the "black" teams, but suffice it to say, those who were selected to play in this game were divided up into roughly equivalent numbers to form up two teams, of roughly comparable ability, and the game was on. Our only comment regarding the format is that the games seemed just a bit long, but then you can't please everyone (for years we've heard complaints about the Pumps' all-star games because many believe they are too short....like we said, you can't please everyone).
Below is the full list of those selected to play in this game. There were a couple of kids who were wearing numbers that weren't listed on the roster, and since we'd never seen them prior to tonight, we have no idea who they were. Among those we did know though, we liked Jonathan Tolliver (6'-4" Sr. G) from Westchester, Robbie Haynes (6'-2" Sr. G) from Mater Dei, and Orlando Baeza (5'-11" Sr. G) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. We also thought Jon Kargas (6'-4" Sr. G) from Scripps Ranch played hard as did Jason Deutchman (6'-5" Jr. G/F) from Santa Monica, and Davon Roberts (6'-6" Jr. G/F) from Glendora. But probably the two players with the most upside in the game (in our humble opinion) were Khelcy Barrs, from Leuzinger and Joey Shaw, a 6'-6" Jr. who is long and lean, from Chandler, Arizona. And as we said, there were a couple of other guys we didn't know, and couldn't match up with a jersey number, but hey, that's life....
Here is the list of game participants:

We've place asterisks next to the names of the guys who we definitely know were in attendance and who played. Some guys we know were not there (like Alex Jacobs or Zamon McGee in this game, or Taylor King in the next game). Still even with the few no-shows, it was a pretty good showcase. Not much slamming and jamming, but still some good athleticism and we got to see some guys that we'd never seen before.
Congratulations to those selected to play in the game. Good luck in your recruiting, and with the rest of the summer.....See you around the gym.
