Ah, the "Best of the Best." The last of the five all-star games at the Double Pump West Coast All-Star camp. Reserved for the players who the coaches' committee thought were the "best" at the camp. Just as we said about the selections in a few of the other games, some of these kids clearly deserved to be here and others could easily have been put into the junior or senior class games, or even the frosh-soph game. But everyone's got an opinion, and in this case, this list represents the opinions of the guys who spent the most time watching these kids for four days straight.
The game itself was somewhat anticlimactic, and it once again reminded us of why we sometimes don't like this kind of format. What do we mean? Well, in this game especially, it was absolutely guard oriented, and the most explosive and fun to watch quality big men in the camp, Artem Wallace (6'-8" Jr. F) from Toledo, WA, and Bill "Baseline Bill" Forelli (6'-6" Sr. F) from Gig Harbor, WA, barely touched the ball in this contest. Sure there are a lot of guards, but we saw fewer entry passes in this game than in any of the others. Lots of athleticism, lots of fast breaks, and a lot of shots being launched from three point range, but not of lot of reward for the big men, and it was kind of a shame because most of the big men in this game really do know how to get it done if given a chance to touch the ball. Still and all, it was entertaining, and we were once again pleased to watch some of the good local kids like Johnathan Gibson from West Covina, or Seketoure Henry from Lynwood,, as well as Davon Roberts from Glendora and DeAndre Robinson from MLK in Riverside.
