NCAA Certified Event Division I Coaches Permitted to Attend |
We don't have a whole lot to say about this game, except that it was fun to watch, so we'll just get down to telling you who played (see the list below). This group of players was divided up into roughly two groups of 10 (well, actually one team had 11), and each player got to play about half the game, so all of the assembled college coaches--and there were a ton of D-I schools from all over the country surrounding the court at Lynwood this morning and more filed in throughout the game--got a good chance to see everyone for a good representative amount of time.
The list of players was selected by the five of the camp coaches, acting as an all-star committee; the group this year consisted only of college coaches (two from east coast D-II's) and high school coaches who worked the camp, which was the process used last year as well. Scouts in attendance had some minor input, but it was--trust us on this one-- really minor.

All of these guys played well, but among the few local guys, John Austin from Cleveland in Reseda looked particularly good, hitting a couple of nice pull up jumpers and floating the ball out to the big men. Tim McLaurin also played well and....well, those were the only two local guys. De'Jon Jackson from Clovis looked solid, and of the out-of-state kids, we particularly were impressed with Cody Rogers from Ohio, a solid point guard who can score, defend and who has quick hands and is always playing hard. Tyler Carroll was also impressive, more so during the regular sessions of the camp, but he's got a lot of talent and upside. Keith Olson from Douglas in Nevada also has a chance to be good, but has a very intersting style of running which at the moment we attribute to him just getting used to his body; but he hustles, runs on every play and always seems to be around the ball.
The game was a nice prelude to the next game, which aptly enough, is now called the "Best of the Next"....whatever that's supposed to mean (read it closely and then think about it....and again, we ask, what the heck does it mean?).
Many of these same kids will also be at the Pumps' #2 session, which gets started tomorrow, so we should have another opportunity to check some of these guys out yet again. Games tomorrow don't get started until the evening session, but the afternoon will see the usual format of 1/2 scrimmage games, which is often just as good as these 50 minute games (played without any break, they can sometimes seem longer than any stop-clock college game...but that's a different story).
Congratulations to the kids who were selected to the all-star game. We look forward to seeing you progress through the ranks of the recruiting process and wish you all success...
