What:   Double Pump West Coast All-Star Camp
When:   Session I,  July 8-11, 2003
Where:   Lynwood HS (games only)
CSUDH (dorms for campers)
Who:   298 high school prospects
NCAA Certified Event
Division I Coaches Permitted to Attend

Ok, so once again, this past week, we've had to take yet another hiatus from writing, this time because of a forced stint on jury duty (that's right, even lawyers have to do it).   So, the upshot is that rather than taking a trip back east to ABCD Camp or Nike Camp, we're instead going to be here in Southern California during the first four days of the NCAA's July open evaluation period, and we'll be visiting the Double Pump West Coast All-Star Camp, Session I, as well as a few other places during the week.

The Pumps' West Coast All-Stars Camp has, for the past decade, been run at Cal State Dominguez Hills, but this year, all of the games have been moved to Lynwood.   All of the campers will still be staying on campus in the dorms at CSUDH, but they won't be playing at the gym on campus at CSUDH  because the floor is still in the process of being refinished...yes, this is just a side benefit of all that Home Depot soccer stadium money floating around, even while California is in the midst of a budget crisis which will no doubt have a horrible effect on high school sports, basketball in particular....but we digress.

So, with the Cal State Dominguez Hills gym out of the picture this year, the plan is to run West Coast All-Stars in much the same way ABCD Camp is run, i.e., the players will stay at one location, several miles removed from the playing facility, and they will take shuttle busses back and forth between CSUDH and Lynwood.

It remains to be seen whether this temporary move to Lynwood will detract from the overall experience of the camp, both for the college coaches who will be there (today is the first day coaches can be out on the road doing evaluations).   It most likely shouldn't have any affect, and in fact, there are a number of guys who will argue that Lynwood is really a better location for a camp like this, including Dino Trigonis' Fullcourt Press Camp, who decided to first compete with the Pumps locally head-on by running his camp at Lynwood for a few years before moving to the Brethren Christian Warrior Center in Cypress.  In fact, later this week, both camps will be in session locally, which is going to make things really interesting considering the driving distance between the two.   In the meantime though, from July 8-11, the Pump Camp is the only one locally which is NCAA certified, so it will definitely attract our attention.

The Pumps' West Coast All-Stars Camp isn't the only NCAA certified event running locally which will likely attract D-I coaches during the July 8-11 period.  The 2003 Bellflower HS Hoop Summit is also NCAA certified,  and it should also feature some top local talent, so we will likely be shuttling over to Bellflower and St. John Bosco in the next few days to catch some of the action from Rick Isaacs' H-Squad, or Rock Johnson's Amer-I-Can team, and a few others....just not today though.

Today instead we'll be heading over the Pumps at Lynwood to see who the top players are:  So who will be at the Pumps'?  We have the complete list, but we don't have time to post it, and there are only a few local names that are recognizable, and it's probably a lot easier to tell you who won't be there rather than who will, because all of the "names" you're most familiar with are either at Nike Camp or ABCD, or just not attending any of the camps.  Still, there are a few locally recognizable names, but this year's camp has more of an "all-west coast" flavor to it than others we can recall in recent years.   By that we mean that a lot of guys attending aren't local products, but instead hail from Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and thus we've not had a chance to really see them for any extended period, or at all.   Among the players we intend to take a look at are:

Of course, this list contains only a fraction of the players who will be attending the adidas Double Pump West Coast All Stars Camp, and we certainly don't mean to imply that the rest of the players aren't worthy of being mentioned, or that we are going to ignore them, because that's just not true. Quite to the contrary, the task at hand will be to identify those who are playing well and who have some upside to play at the next level.

If you're heading out to Lynwood, this afternoon's activities include scrimmages and team practices, which run from 1:30 p.m. through 4:00 p.m.  The scrimmage games are a bit shorter than the regular camp games, but they are still fun to watch.  The actual team games will get underway in earnest later this evening, beginning at 6:10 p.m. at Lynwood HS (located on Imperial Hwy, just west of the 710 Fwy).  We'll post the full schedules later (maybe), but for now, just keep in mind that there will only be three courts running side-by-side rather than the usual four courts at Dominguez Hills, so the schedule will be a bit tighter and the games will end a bit later than what we've been used to.  But three courts, rather than four is probably a good thing, in terms of being able to focus.  Anyway, without listing all of the teams and the rosters,  this will at least give you an idea of when each of the games begins and ends:

1st   Games:  6:10-7:00 p.m.
2nd Games:  7:00 -7:50 p.m.
3rd  Games:  7:50-8:40 p.m.
4th  Games:  8:40-9:30 p.m.
5th  Games:  9:30-10:20 p.m.

Again, this camp runs from today, July 8 through July 11, and the second session (which is generally considered to be a bit more competitive) will run from the 11th through 15th.

See you there....
