1st Annual "Supreme 16"
Starts This Friday--(Oct. 2, 2003)
Rodney Guillory, who has hosted some very good events recently is at it again, and he'll have another fine one this weekend. He happened to tell us about it last summer, but it completely slipped our minds until we came across a blurb in yesterday's Long Beach Press Telegram written by our friend Louis Johnson. So we thought we'd spread the word about what looks to be an interesting tournament:
"The inaugural Supreme 16 boys basketbal traveling team tournament is scheduled to take place this weekend at Lynwood High. The 16-team event, which will begin Friday at 5pm and features noon starting times on Saturady and Sunday, will include players from Centennial, Poly, Dominguez, Carson, South Gate, Mayfair, Verbum Dei, King-Drew, Oceanside El Camino, Bishop Montgomery, Harvard-Westlake, Price, Clevland, and Canyon Springs. General admission is $5 and the championship game is slated for 6pm on Sunday."
Keep in mind that despite what you read about on the message board, this is NOT a high school team tournament. It can't be because of CIF-SS rules which preclude official high school teams from competing as such at any time except during the regular high school "season of sport." But don't be surprised if every team on each team also happens to attend the same high school....Hey, it's just a club thing, right? So, even though these aren't "high school" teams, at least not in any official sense, we can't think of anything else to call them. We could use the team's mascot as a disguise, but why bother. No CIF-SS coaches will be there, but plenty of players will be. Here's the schedule (It's a pool play event, so keep in mind that not every team plays each other during the first two days....the top two teams from each pool will move on to Sunday competition....and unfortunately, we don't have the pool assignments, but we think we have them figured out....):

Based on this schedule, here are the pools, at least as far as we can tell...We're not sure we've got them in order (in terms of "pool A" or "B" or "C"), but the teams in each pool would be correct if the schedule we've been provided is accuarte:

Carson Harvard-Westlake Long Beach Poly Price |
El Camino King Drew South Gate Verbum Dei |
Should be fun. See you there.
