This year, as in years past, our San Diego Previews are brought to you courtesy of the San Diego Basketball Coaches' Association. Much of the material which follows in this and other related articles will have already found its way to various newspapers in San Diego, including the SD Union Tribune. We haven't checked the papers, and even if they do publish some of this stuff, the info will likely be formatted differently....but that's beside the point. We want to pass the info along, in a semi-timely fashion, so we're not going to procrastinate any longer. And before you ask, we can't exactly explain who the SDBCA really is, or who had input into putting this stuff together. Just know this: We didn't do it, so if you disagree or think this stuff is just too wacky, well, blame them, not us. And if it happens to be an accurate prediction of how the season turns out, then of course, we're going to take all the credit.
Here's the San Diego Coastal North League Preview, team by team, in the order of predicted finish:.
Coastal North League1) Santa Fe Christian (Division 5, Solana Beach)
Head Coach: Randy Wright (4th Year)
Last years record: 28 7 (10 2, 1st)
Last years playoffs: Won CIF D-5 Championship; Lost in State 2nd
Round.
Key players: Nick Corso (Sr, 510"), Ryan Cornett (Sr, 606"),
Ryan Alexander (Sr, 511"), Marcus Sun (So, 602")
Losses to overcome: Matt Wild (graduation), Shaun Wickers (graduation)
Summary: Corso is the leading return scorer in the county, and along with
Alexander, forms a solid nucleus for the Eagles. Cornett should provide enough of an
inside presence for the Eagles to wrap up another D-5 CIF crown.
2) Army-Navy Academy (Division 4, Carlsbad)
Head Coach: Bobby Huggins (7th Year)
Last years record: 4 16 (2 10, 4th)
Last years playoffs: None
Key players: Kyle Adams (Sr, 601"), Jake Peek (So, 602"),
John Wilson (Jr, 603"), Harry Rivera (So, 606")
Losses to overcome: Jose Cota (graduation)
Summary: Graduation of Cota is a blow, but the transfer of Adams is a nice
addition. Solid nucleus of players returns to give the Warriors an improved look.
3) San Dieguito Academy (Division 3, Encinitas)
Head Coach: Gene Victor (2nd Year)
Last years record: 14 12 (5 6, 3rd)
Last years playoffs: Lost in 1st Round.
Key players: Joel Connors (Sr, 600"), Tyler Shimkus (Sr,
602")
Losses to overcome: Kellen Polan (graduation)
Summary: Solid club returns for the Mustangs, anchored by Connors and Shimkus.
Still lack some offensive punch, but should continue to improve and be a thorn in Santa Fe
Christians side.
4) Tri-City Christian (Division 5, Vista)
Head Coach: Tim Shelton (8th Year)
Last years record: 18 10 (8 4, 2nd)
Last years playoffs: Lost in Quarterfinals.
Key players: Ryan Weiss (Sr, 602"), Jeff Boerneke (Sr, 600"),
Kevin Witowich (Sr, 602"), Rawley Mitchell (Jr, 600"), Evan Kraatz
(So, 600")
Losses to overcome: Brian Kraatz (graduation), Marcus Harkness (Trinity College
{IL})
Summary: The loss of Harkness and Kraatz are substantial. Several solid role
players return, but the Eagles need some of them to assert themselves in order to
compete in the league race.
5) Calvin Christian (Division 5, Escondido)
Head Coach: Kevin Veenstra (3rd Year)
Last years record: 5 19 (0 11, 5th)
Last years playoffs: Lost in Quarterfinals.
Key players: Thomas Donovan (Sr, 600"), Austin Visser (Jr,
602"), Kevin McQuire (Jr, 605"), Brandon Petty (Jr, 510")
Losses to overcome: James Baker (graduation), Matt Baker (graduation)
Summary: The loss of James Baker will hurt, but the Crusaders are hoping that last
years youthful squad has matured. Petty and Donovan form a solid backcourt,
while McQuire and Visser provide size up front.
Player of the Year:
Nick Corso (Santa Fe Christian)
All-Coastal North League:
Kyle Adams (Army-Navy Academy)
Ryan Alexander (Santa Fe Christian)
Nick Corso (Santa Fe Christian)
Tyler Shimkus (San Dieguito Academy)
