This year, as in years past, our San Diego Previews are brought to you courtesy of the San Diego Basketball Coaches' Association. Much of the material which follows in this and other related articles will have already found its way to various newspapers in San Diego, including the SD Union Tribune. We haven't checked the papers, and even if they do publish some of this stuff, the info will likely be formatted differently....but that's beside the point. We want to pass the info along, in a semi-timely fashion, so we're not going to procrastinate any longer. And before you ask, we can't exactly explain who the SDBCA really is, or who had input into putting this stuff together. Just know this: We didn't do it, so if you disagree or think this stuff is just too wacky, well, blame them, not us. And if it happens to be an accurate prediction of how the season turns out, then of course, we're going to take all the credit.
Here's the San Diego Grossmont North League Preview, team by team, in the order of predicted finish:.
Grossmont North League1) West Hills (Division 2, Santee)
Head Coach: Jeff Armstrong (11th Year)
Last years record: 15 12 (8 0, 1st)
Last years playoffs: Lost in 1st Round D-1.
Key players: Matt Gilson (Jr, 602"), Blake Sutton (Sr, 603"),
Ryan Shumaker (Jr, 605"), Bo Hart (So, 602")
Losses to overcome: Sam Miller (graduation), Brad Ostrander (graduation)
Summary: A quality nucleus returns for the Wolf Pack as they look to repeat as
league champs. Gilson is a fine lead guard while Shumaker is tough in the post.
2) Grossmont (Division 2, Grossmont)
Head Coach: Frank Foggiano (3rd Year)
Last years record: 15 13 (4 4, tied for 2nd)
Last years playoffs: Lost in Quarterfinals.
Key players: Tyler Vickers (Sr, 605"), Tyler Barbour (Jr,
600"), James Crooks (Sr, 607"), Casey Williams (Sr, 602")
Losses to overcome: Blake Brands (graduation)
Summary: The Foothillers return most of their key players from a year ago and look
to make a run at the league crown. Vickers is a quality scorer inside who will be hard to
defend, while Barbour provides key leadership in the backcourt. They should battle with
West Hills to the very end.
3) El Cajon Valley (Division 2, El Cajon)
Head Coach: Nate Reed (1st Year)
Last years record: 9 17 (4 4, tied for 2nd)
Last years playoffs: None
Key players: Deron Taylor (Sr, 603"), Demarcus Flemister (Sr,
508")
Losses to overcome: Nate Reed (graduation)
Summary: Reeds graduation leaves a void in the backcourt for the Braves who
already lacked size up front. Taylor and Flemister need big years for El Cajon to compete
with the top teams in the league.
4) Santana (Division 3, Santee)
Head Coach: Tim Barry (4th Year)
Last years record: 3 20 (0 8, 5th)
Last years playoffs: None
Key players: Scott Rohner (Sr, 511"), Tai Purpero (Jr, 605"),
Adam Vickery (Sr, 600")
Losses to overcome: Kellan Kemp (graduation), Tim Henselmeier (graduation)
Summary: The Sultans should be improved over a year ago as they have some
experience and size returning. The key may be Rohner who is a quality player that sat out
last year.
5) El Capitan (Division 2, Lakeside)
Head Coach: Ross Furrow (12th Year)
Last years record: 10 16 (4 4, tied for 2nd)
Last years playoffs: None
Key players: Justin Galloway (Sr, 601"), Jesse Leatherman (Sr,
510"), Johnny Curo (Sr, 508")
Losses to overcome: Jarrod Boswell (Univ. of Wyoming), Scott Fisher (graduation),
Sean Hogue (graduation)
Summary: The loss of Boswell from last years mediocre group is a major blow
that will be impossible to overcome. Looks to be a long year for the Vaqueros.
Player of the Year: Tyler Vickers (Grossmont)
All-Grossmont North League:
Matt Gilson (West Hills)
Scott Rohner (Santana)
Ryan Shumaker (West Hills)
Deron Taylor (El Cajon Valley)
Tyler Vickers (Grossmont)
