                                                Runner-up-- Castlemont

If you thought the San Francisco Section of the CIF (technically known as the "AAA" or Academic Athletic Association") was tiny, you haven't really considered just how small Oakland's CIF Section is.  The "Section" is really just one league, smaller than many of the CIF-SS's mid-sized leagues, with just 6 teams:  McClymonds HS, Oakland Tech HS, Fremont HS, Skyline HS, Oakland HS, and Castlemont HS.

It's always hard to get information out of the Oakland Section because they don't have a website.  It's even trickier trying to figure out who's playing in the Section Championship because of the unique format of the games.  But this year, with MaxPreps providing pretty solid information for just about every team in the State of California, it's a little easier to figure out.    Eric Maddy, who is a stats wizard and a genius at keeping track of such things, and who also works for the LA Times (with a bit of freelancing for the CIF-SS too), sent us an e-mail about this year's Oakland Section Championships, with the standings and the first round matchups from info that he was able to compile.  If it's wrong, don't blame us, since we're just relying on Eric for this stuff....

The format of this tournament is also kind of wierd:  Only the top three teams compete for the "title" and the right to earn a berth in the State Northern Regional Tournament.   Here's how it works:   The third place team plays a game against the second place team;  the winner of that first game (No. 2 vs. No. 3) then plays the first place team;   if either No. 2 or No. 3 beats the No. 1 team,  those two teams then have to play again.   Thus the last game shown below in the bracket is called an "if game."    Kind of weird, but that's the way it is.

According to Eric Maddy, In the past, the championship games (and "if-games") have been played at Kaiser, though this year it could be different.  If you're up in the Bay Area, check the local paper for the schedule.
