Division III-AA--(Feb. 4, 2001)
Southern Section D-IIIAA Top 15 as of Feb. 4, 2001 (Games Through 2/3/01)I |
||||
1 | Bishop Montgomery | Record: 20-2, 6-0. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 1. They will win their league, and probably their division as well now that Centennial might not even make the playoffs with ineligible players and 11 forfeit losses. Errick & Derrick Craven (USC), DeVaughan Peace (UCI) and unsigned senior Kenny D'Oyen lead the defending State Champs. Next Up: @ St. Paul on Monday 2/5, then finish the regular season hosting Bishop Amat on 2/7.
2 | San Dimas | Record: 20-3, 10-1. San Dimas continues to tear it up. Jason Greenlee, Paul Marshall, and Curtis Small continue to play well. Could challenge for a title again. Beat Baldwin Park by 23 on Friday. Next up: @ Sierra Vista on Monday, then hosting Covina on Wednesday 2/7, then @ Northview for the conclusion of league play on 2/9.
3 | Centennial--Compton | **They would be 22-3, and 12-0, but because they played 11 games with Tony Key, who was ruled ineligible, the Apaches are now only 11-14 overall and 5-7 in league. They have the requisite number to petition to get into the playoffs, but the CIF may exact some additional penalities against the program, or at least that's what the local papers have reported. Even with their record, they are still an excellent team. We'd move them down further, but they can still probably beat just about everyone except Bishop Montgomery, and maybe now San Dimas and Ridgecrest. The SCIBCA/CIF Poll has them removed from the rankings, further evidence of the punitive effect of the imposed forfeit losses.
4 | Burroughs-Ridgecrest | Record: 18-3, 6-0. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 3. USC-signee Rory O'Neil leads along with Paul Graham, Levi Steinmetz. Next Up: Hosting @ Victor Valley on 2/6, and then hosting Desert Sky League rival Barstow on 2/9 to finish league season.
5 | Pomona | Record: 19-5, 7-1. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 7. Beat Diamond Ranch on Friday. Will win Miramonte League too. Odell Howard, Darnell Buchanon and Spencer Smith lead. Next up: Two more games remaining, hosting Garey on 2/6, and then @ Los Altos on 2/8.
6 | Notre Dame (S.O.) | Record: 19-5, 7-3. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 5. Beaten by Loyola, Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake, they have turned the corner and beat Crespi on Friday and are now looking at Loyola on Monday for the Mission League title. Cody Pearson, Mike Luderer, and Ruben Sanchez lead. Next up: Hosting Loyola on Monday 2/5; then @ Harvard-Westlake to close out league season.
7 | La Canada | Record: 18-6, 5-3 in Rio Hondo League. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 4. Jordan Ballard, Robbie Neyland, Kurt Turley, Joel Kim, Mark Moore, Greg Gaudino and Billy Hofman are the core of this team. Two more games left: Hosting South Pasadena on 2/6, and @ Blair on 2/8.
8 | Riverside ML King | Record: 16-6, 5-2. SCIBCA/CIF No. 9 Beat Roubidoux the second time around this last Friday. Marvin Lea and Leon Rosborough have been the impetus for King's good fortune. Next Up: hosting Kaiser on 2/6 then hosting Bloomington to conclude the league season.
9 | Chaminade | Record: 16-8, 7-4. Well in the thick of the Mission League race, it will not really be up to the Eagles, as they already have one more loss than Loyola and Notre Dame, but should finish a solid third. Beat Harvard-Westlake 9-14, 3-7) on Friday. Scott Borchart, Jordan O'Gilivie and some talented freshmen lead. Next Up: last game of the season @ St. Francis on 2/7.
10 | Costa Mesa | Record: 15-9, 5-3. SCIBCA/CIF No. 10. Lost to Northwood on Friday night; will not win the Pacific Coast League, but will qualify for the playoffs. Chad Vakili, David Conte and Mike Payne have formed the main offensive core for Costa Mesa. Next: @ Laguna Beach on 2/6, then @ Corona del mar on 2/8 to conclude league play.
11 | Ganesha | Record: 14-11, 8-4. SCIBCA/CIF: Not ranked. Valle Vista League play has been tough but they recently beat No. 2 ranked San Dimas in a shocker. Two more games: Sierra Vista @ Ganeahs and South Hills on 2/9 @ Ganesha.
12 | Covina | Record: 14-10, 8-4. SCIBCA/CIF Poll "Others". Beat Baldwin Park on Friday. Brett Pill and Emmanuel Olayinka have been leading. Next Up: @ San Dimas on 2/7, then @ Sierra Vista on Friday, 2/9 to finish league season.
11 | Santa Ynez | Record: 13-8, 6-2. SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 10 (tie with Costa Mesa) Los Padres League is going to be a stretch for them to win with only two games left, against Cabrillo Lompoc on 2/7 and Morro Bay on 2/9 (both games at home), as they lost to league leading Atascadero on Friday by 8 points.
14 | Morningside | Record:11-9., 6-7. Picked up a win against Santa Monica on Friday. Praise Odiakosa and Khali Young, Marlon Brisco, Dave Payne, Daniel Campbell, Marques Calcote lead. Two games remaining: Tues. 2/6 @ Peninsula and hosting Leuzinger on 2/8.
15T | Gladstone | Record: 9-7, 5-3. SCIBCA/CIF Poll: Not ranked. Lost to La Puente on Friday, and only two games remain, and they need to win both: ON Tuesday 2/6 @ Workman and 2/8 @ Duarted. We'll see.
15T | St. Francis | Record: 9-12, 4-6. SCIBCA/CIF Poll: "Others". May not qualify for playoffs, and with two games left, on Monday @ Chaminade and hosting Alemany on 2/7 to close out league play, these are do-or-die games. Still, Michael Jenkins and Sean Mitchell are fun to watch.
