SoCalHoops HS Top 18
Division V-A--(Feb. 4, 2001)
Heading into the last week of regular season competition before the playoffs, this is the last poll we will issue before the end of the playoffs, because by next Sunday, the playoff brackets will be announced and then the following week, single-elimination play will commence, and the rankings will be largely irrelevant. This is one division where it's been way too hard to really have much meaningful comparison between the teams during most of the season. Once you get past the top 6 or so, it's very difficult to give any meaningful assessments because most league competition is not very tough, and in fact, it's just plain hard to get to see some of these teams at all. Either they don't have their own gyms, are too distant for us to get to, or their schedules weren't even supplied to the CIF. The result is that we've only been able to provide won-loss records for the top 11 teams, and in some instances those are an estimate. . . All of this is not to say that those teams where we haven't provided any information aren't worthy of our time, but only that we just have had tremendous difficulty securing won-loss records without undue consumption of time. Most newspapers we rely on do not print results for the teams in this division, and therefore it's very difficult to find out how they are all doing. Anyway, here's how we've ranked the teams in this division:
Southern Section D-VA Top 15 as of Feb. 4, 2001 (Games Through 2/3/01) |
||||||
1 | Price | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 1. Several wins over several teams including V-AA ranked No. 1 Verbum Dei, and several other higher division schools. Really no doubt about this team being ranked number one in this division. Defending Southern Section and State Champions. Not much competition in Coastal Life League. One more regular season game against New Roads @ Price on 2/8.
4 | Stoneridge Prep | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No.4. Record: 15-6, 5-0. Just beat previously undefeated Tarbut v' Torah on Friday. In this division, they are the real deal, but whether they will be able to take on Price is the big question.
2 | Tarbut V' Torah | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 3. 17-1 with their only loss to Stoneridge Prep.
3 | Antelope Valley Christian | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 2. Record: 15-6, 7-0 in the Agape League. Still a top four seeded team.
5 | West Los Angeles Baptist | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 5. No idea what their record is, but they've been winning.
6 | Hesperia Christian | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 8 (tie with Apple Valley) Hesperia Christian lost one of their best players during the mid-season, but they've managed to come together, and last week beat Apple Valley Christian.
7 | Desert Christian--Bermuda Dunes | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 6, 16-3, 9-0 in Victory League. Two more games remaining, aginst coachella Valley on 2/6 and hosting Mesa Grande on 2/8.
8 | Orangewood Academy | Cant' locate a record, but they are still ranked No. 7 in SCIBCA/CIF as well as No. 8 here.
9 | Valley Christian --Santa Maria | SCIBCA/CIF Poll No. 10. Beat Maricopa by 27 on Friday.
10 | Newbury Park Adv. | SCIBCA/CIF Poll Unranked. Newbury Park Adventist is now 12-2 and 9-0 and will win the Omega League.
11 | Hillcrest Christian--Thousand Oaks | SCIBCA/CIF Poll Unranked. Record: 8-10, 7-4 in Westlside League and will likely finish third. Beat Santa Clarita Christian convincingly on Saturday.
10 | Calvary Chapel--Redlands
