San Andreas League 2001-02--(Nov. 23, 2001)
SAN ANDREAS LEAGUE Cajon Colton Pacific San Bernardino San Gorgonio Yucaipa |
The San Andreas League is also a perennially competitive league, often featuring some of the best players in the Inland Empire region, and this season will be no different. Look for Cajon to be strong again with Donovan Morris, a long, lanky wing who can get to the basket and who will be recruited highly in the spring. Pacific and Cajon tied last year for the title, and they will both again be in contention for another championship run. Colton and San Gorgonio also made runs last year, and all teams in the league with the exception of San Bernardino and Yucaipa made it to the playoffs, and probably all but those two have a shot at the league title this year. What follows is what we know about the teams thus far this season, which means we're looking at old rosters and predicting who will be returning and which younger players will be stepping up. The schedules are accurate as far as we know, We encourage coaches to send us their official rosters (via e-mail) and any other information about their teams so we can update these previews.
San Andreas League Rosters | San Andreas League Schedules |
Cajon--9-1,
19-6 (1st) "Cowboys" Cajon was the league champion last season, losing only one league game, and as a result were a "hidden" seed (i.e., only the top 4 teams are "seeded" but they still got a very favorable spot in the bracket) and faced a wild-card team int he first round, West Covina. Cajon then met Misison Viejo in the second round, knocking them off, and ultimately got unlucky in the quarterfinals against Thousand Oaks, which made it as far as the semifinals. The Cowboys return some of the most talented players in the IE region, including Donovan Morris, a big-time player with huge potential who impressed a lot of people at ABCD Camp this summer and with his very athletic presence on the IEBP squad. We don't have a complete roster, but these are some names we believe you'll see in 2001-02 on the Cajon roster: Donovan Morris 6-4" Sr. F Update 11/27/01: Today's edition of the Riverside Press Enterprise contained the paper's Riverside and San Bernardino region team previews and player profiles written and compiled by PE staff writer Damian Secore (who can be reached by phone at 909-782-7595 The original preview capsules can be found at this link, and there's also a separate overview piece too, but we've excerpted the portion pertaining to Cajon: SAN BERNARDINO CAJON Coach: Jerry Tivey 2000-01 record: 19-6 (reached Division 1AA quarterfinals). Outlook: Tivey enters his final year as coach and hopes to ride the coattails of senior guard Donovan Morris (6-foot-3) -- a Division I recruit who averaged 24 points a game last season -- to a deep CIF playoff run. The experienced Cowboys are the undisputed San Andreas League favorites. Other returning starters are senior forward Andre Payne (6-2), Cajon's best defensive player who averaged 12 ppg last year, and junior guard Romale Porter (6-1). Athletic sophomore forward Tony Danridge (6-3) is an energy player. Senior Rummel Clark (6-4) will be among Cajon's leading scorers either off the bench or as a starter.

Pacific--9-1,
18-6 (1st tie) "Pirates" Pacific Pacific, which tied for 1st place in the league, managed a first round win in the Division I-A playoffs over Riverside Poly, and then came up short against Tony Melum's Newport Harbor squad in the second round (NH went on to the quarterfinals, losing to Villa Park, which itself lost in the next round to Corona Centennial). Pacific only graduated 3 seniors from last year's roster, but lost a couple of players to transfers and moves according to new first year coach Corey Hogue. Those transfers included losing Jemar Davis 5'-10" Sr. G to Rialto, Muhammad Abdulwakil 6'-2" Sr. F, who moved to Philadelphia, and Jacob Daigle 6'-2" Jr. G, who transferred to San Gorgonio. Here's the roster Coach Hogue sent us: Anthony Bradley, Sr 6-3 G/F

San Gorgonio--5-5, 15-11 (3rd tie) "Spartans" Division I-AA playoffs, second round. Beat San Gabriel (Almont #2), lost to El Toro, section finalist. The team graduated six players from that playoff roster, and lost Jacob Daigle (6'-4" Jr. G/F) who transferred to Pacific, so the Spartans will do some rebuilding. Here's a list of players we expect to return from last year's team for the 2001-02 season: Kevin Houston 5'-10' Jr. G

Outlook: Stockham begins his second year at his alma mater and relies on the motion offense and smart, disciplined basketball. That may be a challenge with no returning starters. Junior Kevin Houston, a solid reserve last year, will start at the point. Other juniors in the starting lineup include swingman Khorry Lewis, 6-4 forward Jacob Daigle and 5-10 Daryl Leach. Senior center Thomas Tyler (6-6) transferred in from Sacramento. He attended San G. as a freshman and sophomore.

Colton--5-5,
15-11 (3rd tie) "Yellowjackets" Colton made it to the I-AA playoffs, as an At-Large team, and like a lot of other such entries who don't earn an automatic bid, they were knocked out in the first round by JW North (a semifinalist which lost to Glendora, the eventual section champs). Based on the playoff roster, here are the names we expect to see returning for the 2001-02 season: Daniel Evans 5'-10' Jr. G |
