SoCal National Recruiting Report

Notre Dame Has Best Class In Memory--(November 4, 1997)

The Boston Globe yesterday reported that Notre Dame has the best basketball lineup in years following the addition of its third Top 100 recruit this year.

Harold Swanagan, a 6-foot-8 power forward from University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville, Ky., verbally committed to Notre Dame on Sunday. He joins Troy Murphy,(6'-10" C/F, Delbarton School, Morristown, N.J.), and David Graves (6'-6" SF Catholic High School, Lexington, Ky.).

All three are expected to sign national letters of intent during the Nov. 12-19 early signing period.

The Globe quoted Bob Gibbons, who said, ``Getting Murphy was huge. Murphy makes that class. He's the best big man to sign with Notre Dame since LaPhonso Ellis. He's a bigger version of Pat Garrity. But these other guys can play, too,'' he added. ``It's the best class Notre Dame's had in a long time.''

Swanagan, who visited Notre Dame last weekend, averaged 16 points and nine rebounds a game last year. He said Notre Dame's strong academics was a big factor in his decision.

``As hard as it is, I've got to look down the road beyond basketball,'' Swanagan told the South Bend Tribune. ``And I think Notre Dame can help me be successful with whatever I choose to do in life.''
