College Player Walter Turner Dies--10/20/97

An 18-year-old Florida Atlantic University basketball player collapsed during stretching exercises at practice Sunday, and was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is undetermined. Walter Turner, collapsed but was reportedly still breathing as athletic trainers from the school worked on him while waiting for paramedics. He was declared dead at 2:50
p.m. at Boca Raton Community Hospital, about 45 minutes later.

Turner was a 6-foot-8, 230-pound freshman, from Norland Senior High School in Miami.
Turner did not start playing basketball until his junior year. His high school coach said that the reason he had never played before was because no one had ever asked him to. In his senior year, he was averaging 6 ppg and 11 rebounds per game, and was the starting center. His high school team won a district title last year. An autopsy is pending by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office.

Our condolences to Turner's family.
