"Miami Heat to play exhibition game at Maccabi Tel
Aviv""The Miami Heat will make their first overseas trip for an NBA game when they travel to
Israel to face Maccabi Tel Aviv in October, the league announced today.
"The Heat will play the perennial Israeli champions on October 12th, 1998. Miami is coming
off a 61-21 campaign and a berth in the Eastern Conference finals, the best season in the
nine years of the franchise. Maccabi Tel Aviv has won the championship of Israel 26 times
in the last 27 years.
"'We are very honored to have the Miami Heat play in Israel in 1998,' said Shimon Mizrahi,
president of Maccabi Tel Aviv. 'Our club has always been part of Europe's elite, and we
are extremely pleased to face one of the NBA's best teams here in Tel Aviv. We are
looking forward to this exciting challenge.'
"Maccabi Tel Aviv features former Connecticut collegiate stars Nadav Henefeld and Doron
Sheffer and Randy White, a former member of the Dallas Mavericks.
"'Maccabi Tel Aviv has been one of the most successful clubs in Europe during the past 25 years,' NBA Commissioner David Stern said 'This preseason game will offer fans in Israel a chance to see their current champion against one of the top teams in the NBA.'"
