Boys' Games Scheduled For
Thursday, Jan. 27--(Jan. 27, 2000)

The LA City Section schedules have been posted long ago, and the Magnet League is in action again today in City Section.  In Southern Section, just a handful of games.  In Divisions I & II, the San Gabriel Valley League is in action, with No. 2 in the USA, Dominguez playing Parmount;  In Division III and IV, St. Bernard (unranked) and St. John Bosco (also unranked) should be a good one in a non-league contest.  Out in the Inland Empire, Moreno Valley  will play at Canyon Springs and Rubidoux will be at Riverside Poly which should both be excellent games, and over in the Mountain View League, Jurupa Valley featuring 7'-1 Justin Garcia who has signed with Northern Arizona, will play Corona Centennial featuring Jamal Williams and the Soderberg brothers, while Corona will be at Santiago, and La Sierra will be at Norco.

There are quite a few good DIV and DV games. No. 8 Milken (D-IVA) will take on Granada Hills Hillcrest in what should be an easy win for the Wildcats over a D-VA opponent.  Probably the best matchup though in the Valley region will be the Buckley v. Providence game, in which Buckley (13-2, 7-0), ranked No. 7 in the latest D-VAA poll, and in first place in league will take on Providence (15-3, 7-1), ranked No 5 ranked in CIF-SS D-IVA at Buckley.

In an interesting twist, the host Griffins will dedicate the game to Providence's former head coach Paul Sutton, who died last August of colon cancer; all admission and concession proceeds will be donated to a trust fund for Sutton's children. The game also pits Buckley coach, Dan Haasch, a former assistant at Providence, against Providence's co-coaches who played under Haasch. Mike Bresnahan in yesterday's LA Times had this on the game: "For those who enjoyed the Bobby Knight-Steve Alford saga last week, the mentor-student theme is being revisited this week.  Dan Haasch of Buckley is coaching against two of his former players, Robert Mena and Paolo Velasco of Providence.  Buckley hosts Providence Thursday night in an important Liberty League game.  Haasch coached Mena and Velasco when he was an assistant at Providence in 1990-91.  If recent form holds true, Buckley (13-2, 7-0 in league play) will defeat Providence (15-3, 7-1).  Knight, legendary coach at Indiana, defeated his former player, Alford, in a game last week between the Hoosiers and Iowa, where Alford is a first-year coach.  "I hope we have the same result they did," Haasch said."   The game is set for 7:00 p.m. at Buckley.

Other games of note in the among D-V teams, will featuere Western Christian (tied for No. 10 in CIF-SS DVAA), taking on Mesa Grande, while Ribet, the other No. 10 team in DV-AA,  will take on LA Lutheran at Ribet, and both of these should be good games.  In Division V-A, No. 1 Price will take on. . . er, steamroll, Shalhevet at the Price campus, which is located on Vermont at the "Faith Dome" which some of us old-timers know a little better as the old Pepperdine campus (before Pepperdine moved to Malibu).

As always, we get our schedules from the CIF Southern and City Sections, so if there are errors, don't come whining to us about them.  Check with your local paper or the schools involved before making the trip to be sure there have been no scheduling changes.  Have fun.
