Compton Centennial Slapped
With Five Forfeits--(Jan. 11, 2000)

The Long Beach Press Telegram reported this morning that things have gotten even tougher for Compton Centennial, far tougher than they looked at the beginning of the season.  Not only have they lost the services of Omar Weaver (6'-7" Sr.+ SG), who never ended up playing a game for the Apaches, and instead moved back to Washington D.C. (who also "reopened" his recruitment, after signing a letter of intent with Missouri, which turned out to be invalid because it wasn't signed by his legal guardian).  Not only have the Apaches sustained two league losses as the beginning of the season, to Redondo at the Spot Up Classic this past weekend and to Inglewood last week, but they've also been hit with a CIF Southern Section penalty as a result of "an administrative error".

The details were carried this morning in the Prep Notebook section of the LB P-T (in the print version only, not the version available online), and here's what Louis Johnson and James Melroy reported:

After a pair of tough Bay League losses to Inglewood and Redondo last week, the Centennial boys basketball team was dealt another blow when the team was informed that it would have to forfeit five victories this season.

An administrative error involving the paperwork of some of the team's transfer players will force the Apaches to forfeit victories over Alameda St. Joseph, Foothill and Chaminade in the Rim Rattler Invitational, and wins over Wilson and San Jose Bellarmine Prep at the Best in the West Invitational last mongh.

"We had some paperwork in, but the CIF alerted us to some other thikngs that were needed and we didn't get it done in time,"   Centennial coach Rod Palmer said.  "But this won't slow us down at all.   We're concentrating on league and getting into the playoffs. . . that's the key thing for us, to finish no worse than third and make the playoffs."

The forfeits will drop the Apaches' record to 4-11 on the season.

They are also 0-2 in league.  Chaminade, whose record was reported at 9-5 overall this morning, would thus move to 10-5 instead.
