Consolation Games
Beaumont 70, Roubidoux 53-- Beaumont outscored Rubidoux by 15 points in the second quarter en route to a 70-53 victory by the Cougars in the consolation third-place game of the Mustang Shootout at Hemet West Valley Wednesday. The man-to-man defense of Beaumont held Rubidoux's starters to 21 points. In the second quarter, the Cougars outscored the Falcons 23-9 giving up just one field goal, a three-pointer by Rubidoux's Joe Pham. Junior foward-center Jackson Wood led Beaumont (11-4) with a season-high 25 points, including three three-pointers. Wood has hit 8 of 10 three pointers in two games at West Valley's gym. At the end of the first half, Beaumont's Tory Cohn grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the floor, but passed off to an open Wood in the corner. Wood sank a three-pointer to stake the Cougars to a 15-point lead. Randy Green, the leading scorer for Rubiodux (7-9), was held to five points. Moreno Valley 84, La Quinta 57--Moreno Valley shot 57 percent from the field compared to only 25 percent for La Quinta as the Vikings won a consolation bracket game of the Mustang Shootout. Andre Johnson led Moreno Valley (7-5) with 20 points. Durwin Williams sank seven of nine shots and finished with 16 points, and Lawrence Taylor had eight rebounds and blocked seven shots. The Eagles were led by Seniors Charles Logan and Sidney Hampton, who scored 18 and 17 points, respectively. Hampton had four three-pointers. Will Funn led Bloomington with 19 points. Semifinal Game Tuesday 12/28
Elsinore 78, Cathedral City 66--Elsinore advanced to its third tournament championship game of the season with a victory over Cathedral City in a semifinal game of the Mustang Shootout in Hemet. The game was tied 53-53 after three quarters, but Elsinore started the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run. The team sank 11 of 14 free-throw attempts in the quarter after making just 2 of 11 in the first three quarters. Gerald DeVance led the Lions (10-4) with 21 points. Temecula Valley 72, Palm Desert 61--Palm Desert took advantage of early flatness by Temecula Valley's second string to jump to an early lead, but the Golden Bears rallied in the second half to win a consolation-bracket game of the Mustang Shootout. James Phillips scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the third quarter as the Golden Bears (10-4) regained control. Moreno Valley 65, Notre Dame 50--Durwin Williams and Steve Brown had 13 rebounds apiece as Moreno Valley (6-5) defeated Riverside Notre Dame (2-9) in a consolation-bracket game of the Mustang Shootout. Riverside Poly 70, Indio 69--Marvin Lea hit a three-pointer to tie the game in regulation, then hit a 40-footer as overtime expired to lift Riverside Poly (7-6) to victory in a consolation-bracket game at the Mustang Shootout. Lea, who also hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first half, tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation but failed to convert a free throw for a four-point play and the lead. After Indio took the lead on a free throw with 6.7 seconds to go, Lea rebounded the missed second free throw and lauched the winner. Jeremy Lopez had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Riverside Poly. Chaparral 79, Beaumont 68--Temecula Chaparral outscored Beaumont by 10 points in the third quarter en route to a 79-68 victory Tuesday in a consolation-bracket game of the Mustang Shootout in Hemet. Ryan Cooke had 22 points and nine rebounds for Chaparral (11-3), including nine points during the third-quarter run in which he hit all seven of his free-throw attempts. Beaumont cut Chaparral's lead to seven points in the fourth but could do no more. Aaron Stephens had 20 points and Tory Cohn had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Beaumont (10-4). La Quinta 72, Palo Verde 60--La Quinta broke the game open in the third quarter with full-court pressure. La Quinta (5-7) next faced Moreno Valley Palo Verde (7-7). Twentynine Palms 59, Hemet 44--Twentynine Palms played better second-half defense, and as a result, won a quarterfinal game of the West Valley Tournament. Vili Morton had 26 points and Ray Hester had 12 points to lead the Wildcats. Banning 66, El Segundo 65-- Despite 25 points from JT Leitch, a defensive change helped Banning overcome a 15-point third-quarter deficit en route to a 66-65 victory over El Segundo in a ninth-place quarterfinal game of the Mustang Shootout at Hemet Monday. By the end of the third quarter, Banning was able to cut El Segundo's lead to 10 points, as Marcell Allen hit two consecutive three-pointers, followed by a three from Geno Randle. Senior Mike Davis scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and got six steals in the victory. A layup by Davis tied the score with 15 seconds to play. After Scott Foster stole the ball for the Broncos, Davis was fouled and his free throw in the final seconds earned the Broncos (6-6) the victory. Foster helped hold El Segundo's leading scorer scoreless in the fourth. EL SEGUNDO (65) -- Lewis 9, McClafferty 7, Caho 2, Leitch 25, Strong 6, Hopson 16. Beaumont 59, Riverside Poly 48--Jackson Wood nailed five of six three-point attempts to help Beaumont defeat Riverside Poly in the consolation quarterfinals of the Mustang Shootout at Hemet West Valley High. The Cougars (10-3) started the game with a 10-0 run and maintained a double-digit lead throughout most of the game. Chaparral 69, Indio 32--Joe Buller led Temecula Chaparral with 16 points and six assists. Lemar Ruffin scored 14 points in the Pumas (10-3) victory over Indio (6-4) in the consolation bracket of the Mustang Shootout. Shaun Scott added 12 points off the bench. Elsinore 83, Temecula Valley 56--Elsinore (9-3) limited Temecula Valley's two best scorers, Ryan Rentie and James Phillips to four second-half points while playing excellent team defense. The Tigers shot 10-of-13 from the three-point line on their best shooting night of the season, which proved to be too much for the Golden Bears (9-4) to overcome. Norte Vista 61, Yucca Valley 59--Wendell Horn had his fourth consecutive game of scoring at least 20 points and Keaire Mims made the game-winning free throws as Riverside Norte Vista (5-6) came back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to win a consolation quarterfinal game of the Mustang Shootout in Hemet. John Hanley hit two free throws for the Braves to tie the score at 59-59 with six seconds left As Yucca Valley took the ball past halfcourt to attempt a go-ahead basket, Keaire Mims stole the ball and was fouled. Mims, in his second game back after sitting out six games with a sprained ankle, hit both ends of the one-and-one with one second left for the victory. Horn scored 22 points. Yucca Valley shot 21-of-36 in the first three quarters, but were held to 2 of 14 in the fourth.YUCCA VALLEY (59) -- Phillips 5, Heddig 4, Simmons 19, Brower 2, Vizcarra 29. Temescal Canyon 61, Paloma Valley 52--Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon outscored Menifee Paloma Valley by 13 points in the second quarter en route to a 61-52 victory in an 11th-place quarterfinal game of the Mustang Shootout in Hemet Monday. Neil Thomas scored 16 points and guarded Paloma Valley's Rickey Moore, holding him to 10 points. Ben Owens added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Titans (7-6). Ten of those points came during the Titans' second-quarter run, after Owens took a breather following a scoreless performance in the first quarter.
