1999 S.D. Nike Prep Classic:
Final Results & Game Details--(Jan. 2, 2000)

The 1999 version of the Torrey Pines San Diego Nike Prep Classic concluded the day before New Years Eve, but since we've been celebrating, we're just now getting around to writing about it.  And despite what you may read elsewhere at other websites, none of the final games this year took place at Cox Arena as in previous versions of this tournament.  Call it a Y2K bug, call it budget cutbacks, but this year, all three divisions remained at their respective high school locations for the final day of competition.  There were some big time teams this year, not as many as in previous years, and you can actually blame that on the Y2K thing (which has turned into a big non-event):  It seems a lot of teams didn't want to, or couldn't book flights on New Year's Eve, so they just decided to stay local.  It may also have to do with the new national Federation of High Schools rules involving travel money received from event sponsors, the same rule which Larry McKay of the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic in Las Vegas cited this year for the downturn in the participation of the "big name" teams participating there.   Personally, we're a bit sceptical of that rule (how do you explain the Iolani Classic and the Slam Dunk to the Beach?).   In any event, this year's Nike Prep Classic was a pretty impressive gathering of some of the top teams in the SoCal region, with a couple of teams from New York, Utah, Canada and elsewhere thrown in for good measure.

We can't promise that the results we're posting below are completely, 100% accurate, but they should be generally correct (well perhaps the Governor's Trophy division got a little screwed up, but hey, that's life. . . .).    Who won?   Predictably, Mater Dei won the Classic Division,   defeating Concord De La Salle (they'll have a rematch at the Nike Extravaganza this year, as will Dominguez and Oak Hill. . . but that's another story).  It appears (although we can't completely confirm this) that Palo Verde won the Mayor's Cup division,   and we know for a fact that Riverside Eisenhower won the Governor's Trophy.   Anyway, here are the details and boxes we were able to put together, both with the assistance of the Torrey Pines tournament media folks (thanks guys for all the faxes) and from local papers.   See you next year.

Classic Division Games

Classic Championship

Mater Dei 64, De La Salle 54--Jamaal Sampson had just two first-half points, but in the second scored 12 and had six assists in the Championship game of the Classic Division, played at Torrey Pines High School this past Thursday night. De La Salle (5-1), ranked No. 6 in the state in several preseason polls and an easy winner over Crenshaw in the semifinals, led at the half 34-28, and hung on to the lead until a Mike Strawberry layup with 4:16 to play tied the game at 52. When Mater Dei (14-1), previously ranked No. 1 in the state before the losing to Miami Northwest Christian at the City of Palms Classic in Florida, scored on a monster slam by tourney MVP Sampson off a Cedric Bozeman lob, De La Salle was forced to foul, sending Bozeman to the line. Bozeman, an all-tournament selection, was 14-of-14 from the line in leading the Monarchs, who shot 18-of-20 from the line for the game. In the final 1:21, Mater Dei was 8-of-8.   Bozeman was the high scorer with 22 points and Sampson added 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Spartans were led by all-tourney guard Joe See's 16 points, followed by Chris Schlatter's 15.

Classic Division 3rd Place Game

USDHS 71, Crenshaw 66 (OT)-- For the first half of the game, USDHS (10-2) held the Cougars to just 21 points and lead by as many as 10. But when Crenshaw came to life in the second half, USDHS refused to allow the Cougars to lead by more than a point. Tommy Johnson's three-point field goal for the Cougars with three seconds to play sent the game into overtime but after Crenshaw took a 66-65 lead, Nate Staggs hit a field goal and Kam Walton buried four straight free throws to secure the win. Chris Walton led the way for the Dons with 23 points as Staggs (14) and Kam Walton (10) added double-figure scoring. USDHS 71, CRENSHAW 66 (OT)  Crenshaw 7 14 17 21 7 -- 66 USDHS 13 13 12 21 12 -- 71   Crenshaw -- M. Williams 13, MJWilliams 8, Johnson 7, Toomer 1, Parsons 13, Davis 6, Jones 4, Walls 4.
