Santa Barbara Classic Tournament
Results & Recap--(Jan 2, 2000)
We were up in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria last week for three tournaments (Santa Maria Valley Academy Tournament, Allan Hancock JUCO tournament, and the Santa Barbara Tournament), and here's what we were able to gather from various sources about the Santa Barbara Tournament. Admittedly, we only saw a few of these games, but Santa Barbara and Santa Monica looked really good. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see some of the teams we wanted to see (like Nick Enzweiler and Campolindo, but there's always the playoffs). Here are the results:
All Tournament Team
MVP--Dommanic Ingerson--Santa Barbara
Shawn Whilt--Santa Barbara
Jaime Sanchez--Bishop Diego
Jacoby Atako--Santa Monica
Martin Castro--Santa Monica
Matthew Merricks--Oxnard
Zach Brodt--Desert Mountain
Antawn Guidry--Leigh
Brian McNeese--Cabrillo
Nick Enzweiler--Campolindo.
Championship Game
Santa Barbara 57, Glendora 55-- Thursday night's hero was Santa Barbara High's Trey Putnam, who hit for 10 points in a crucial stretch in the third quarter to help Santa Barbara to the Championship win over Glendora at the Santa Barbara High Holiday Classic. Putnam, who finished with 17 points, got the ball rolling in the third period, cutting into a 12-point deficit with a layup while being fouled. After the center converted on the free-throw and two defensive stops, Putnam nailed a baseline jumper and a long-range trey to tie the game at 33. The Dons (11-2) fought an uphill battle for most of the contest, hampered by sloppy defense and the sharpshooting of the Tartans' Charlie Allen. The senior nailed three consectutive three-pointers midway through the second period to give Glendora its first lead at 18-15. After three Jason Davis baskets, Allen also converted on a rare 4-point play. The Dons had real problems during the first half, largely because Glendora was able to containe leading scorer Dommanic Ingerson. The junior only attempted four shots in the first half and had no points to show for it. But Ingerson came back with a flourish midway through the third, making an off-balance shot as he was knocked to the ground. Ingerson finished with 13 points and was named tournament MVP. Santa Barbara was hot out of the gate, with Williams scoring the Dons' first nine points. Up 6-5, Williams hit a long-range trey from the right corner and was followed by an off-balance three from point guard Shawn Whilt. Third Round Games
Played Wednesday 12/29/99
Championship Semifinal
Santa Barbara 55, Santa Monica 53--Just a couple nights from the year 2000, Santa Barbara High basketball coach Jeff Lavender got his 200th win. Those nice, round numbers did not come easy to the Dons on Wednesday night, however. They had to survive a late barrage of 3-pointers to hold off Santa Monica 55-53 in the first semifinal game of the Holiday Classic at Santa Barbara High. Brent Williams put together a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, augmenting a 16-point effort from junior guard Dommanic Ingerson on the outside. Williams scored eight of his points as a result of offensive rebounds, fighting his way inside against an athletic, physical Viking team that included UCSB-bound guard Jacoby Atako. Dommanic Ingerson, who had 22 in the Dons' first two tournament wins, was aggresively pursued by the Vikings whereever he went after he a couple of 3-pointers in the first period. Santa Barbara trailed 15-11 after the first period but built a 29-20 lead just before half on a 10-0 run triggered by three offensive rebounds by Williams, a turnaround shot in the key by Ingerson and a drive by Shawn Whilt. The Dons, 10-2, extended the margin to 47-34 early in the fourth quarter on a fast break basket by Mike Henderson on an assist from Ingerson. But that's when Santa Monica's 3-point magic started. The Vikings went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers in the period. Martin Castro, the game's top scorer with 19 points, hit two eary and Atako hit one with 33 seconds left to make it 53-50. Ingerson hit two free throws with 27 seconds left but Jerrin McGhee answered with a trey with :15 remaining and Ingerson missed with 8.5 left to allow the Vikings one last shot. The Dons used up two fouls to cut the time remaining to four seconds and a desperation shot at the buzzer by Jon Folonis was well short. Trey Putnam of the Dons, it should be noted, also had a key play down the stretch, hitting a 10-foot jumper under heavy pressure as the shot clock expired with 1:33 to play. SANTA BARBARA--Henderson 3, Whilt 6, Walling 4, C. Peterson 5, Ingerson 16, Putnam 7, Williams 14. Total 55. SANTA MONICA--Castro 19, Brunk 4, Folonis 7, Atako 12, McGhee 7, Harrington 4. Total 53. Championship Bracket
Santa Barbara 68, Desert Mountain 57--Santa Barbara advanced to the semfinals with a 68-57 win over Desert Mountain as Dommanic Ingerson scored 22 points for the second night in a row. The Dons (9-2) next played Santa Monica and UCSB-bound Jacoby Atako, which beat Leight 57-48. The Dons had a rough finish to their game as Dommanic Ingerson and Zach Brodt of Desert Mountain got into a shoving incident after a war of words escalated into what Ingerson claimed was an offensive insult by Brodt. Both players received a technical, and Ingerson sat out the final minute. Ingerson had five rebounds and four assists to go with his 22 points. But the big plus for the Dons was the play of their big men, Charlie Peterson and Trey Putnam. Peterson, a 6-7 senior in his first season as a basketball player, had seven points and a team-high six rebounds. Putnam, a 6-6 junior, had 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. The Dons led 13-10 after the first period and the Wolves were still on their heels at halftime, 31-25, as Chad Christenson hit a shot at the buzzer. But a basket and assist by Putnam to Shawn Whilt, and a 3-pointer by Ingerson built the lead to 38-27 early in the third quarter and Santa Barbara pulled gradually away from there. A foul was called and the Fremont coach drew a technical foul, his second of the game. Another technical was called, the coach was ejected and officials called the game with more than two minutes remaining.
