If you thought the exhibition and "showcase" events were just reserved for the "big" weekends like the MLK, Jr. holiday weekend (adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge and the Nike Dream Classic), think again.   This Saturday at Compton CC, Spot Up will sponsor a terrific showcase, and if it ultimately doesn't turn out to be the best, at least it's the first.  Really though, we think it's going to be pretty good, with some great matchups. And best of all, a portion of the gate receipts will be donated to Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles. Here's what's up:

10:00 a.m.   Glendora v. Verbum Dei
12:00 p.m.   LA Jordan v. Compton HS
2:00 p.m.   Price v. Gardena Serra
4:00 p.m.   Ontario v. Bishop Montgomery
6:00 p.m.   Redondo Union v. Compton Centennial

This is a chance to see some top league and non-league matchups throughout the day.  Glendora is coming off a second place finish at the Santa Barbara Holiday tournament this past week, and Verbum Dei is adjusting to their new coach.  LA Jordan played at the Best in the West this past week and they feature top prospect Tyrone Riley (6'-6" Sr. PF/SF), who will be going up against the mystery Tarbabes from Compton who played alternately well and then struggled at the Ocean View Tournament of Champions.  Price, a Division V powerhouse and contender for this year's Southern Section and State titles, is the team everyone loves to beat up on (at least on our message forum), but they feature some of the top players in the region like Chris Alexander (6'-3" Jr. SG), Mychal Lynch (6'-1" Sr. SG), and Othel Johnson (6'-6" Sr. F).  Price will take on Serra, which features San Diego State signee Aerick Sanders (6'-9" Sr. PF/C) and Doyle Cole (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF).  Ontario has. . .. well, we don't know who they have but they'll have their hands full with Bishop Montgomery, which finished 5th at last weeks' Best in the West, and the Knights feature two of the top guards in the country in Errick and Derrick Craven (6'-2" Jr. SG/PG), Kenny D'Oyen (5'-10" Jr. PG), DeVaughn Peace (6'-3" Jr. SG), and Brian Pruitt (6'-5" Sr. PF) among others.  Finally, Redondo Union, with Andrew Zahn (6'-8" Sr. PF), Adam Zahn (6'-7" So. SG/SF), Ryan Mollins (6'-5" Sr. SG), Walter White (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF), Brendan Behan (5'-11" So. PG), and Dijon Thompson (6'-6" Jr. F) will take on the Apaches of Compton Centennial in a Bay League matchup.  Centennial of course, features a lot of guys who came over from Compton HS from last season, including coach Rod Palmer, and one of the top prospects in the senior class, Ellis Myles (6'-7" Sr. PF).  Centennial also features Erick Alvarez (5'-11" Sr. PG) who transferred in from Palisades, and this should be an excellent matchup of two talented teams in a setting a little more special than just an ordinary league game.  You won't want to miss any of these games, and we'll be there for most of the action, and will have some results and observations as well, so we'll see you all there.

Tickets for the event are $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for students and seniors, and kids under 12 are just $1.00. If you need further information on the event, contact Rodney Guillory, the Event Director at (310) 879-2049 or (213) 719-1890.

See you there.
