Paul Sutton Memorial
This Saturday Night--(Jan. 11, 2000)
Not everyone is playing this weekend at the Pump's MLK adidas 2000 Hoops Challenge at Long Beach City Collegfe (not Dominguez Hills as usual), or at the Pasadena City College "Rose City Rumble" MLK event, nor even at the Harbor City LA City Section Marine League Showcase event. Some teams are playing just regular old league games. . . but some are a little more special than others.
The LA Times' Mike Bresnahan reminded us this morning that Providence High School, located in Burbank, and currently ranked No. 4 in the current SCIBCA poll in Division IV-A, will be holding a memorial on Saturday night for former coach Paul Sutton who died this past August from colon cancer. Both the Providence boys and girls teams will play their games that night, and the proceeds from ticket sales will go to benefit Paul's wife Dana and their two young children, Nate and Ali (they must have been big Deli fans :^) ).
Sutton was a longtime fixture at Providence and is well-remembered by those who knew him. As Bresnahan noted this morning "Sutton organized a similar night in 1997 for Ernie Godinez, a Providence student who was killed in an automobile accident. 'Now it's our turn to do for him what he would have done for us,' said Andrew Bencze, Providence's athletic director."
The games and the memorial will be held at Burbank Burroughs High School.
