New USA Today Rankings Have
Dominguez At No. 2 In USA--(Jan. 12, 2000)

The new USA Today "Super 25" High School boys' basketball rankings were issued yesterday, and considered all games played through January 10.  Dave Krieder compiles the rankings, and this week, he's now got Compton Dominguez ranked at No. 2, which is a lot different that the Jeremy Plowman-Jamie DeMoney "National Prep Poll" .  The West Poll is probably of more interest to most of you reading this, so we'll present that one first:

1. Oak Hill, Mouth of Wilson, Va. (13-1)  Last week: 2. Result: Did not play.

2. Dominguez, Compton, Calif. (13-2)  Last week: 5. Result: Defeated Bishops School (San Diego) 75-41 as Tyson Chandler had 24 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Keith Brooks had 16 points and seven rebounds.

3. Marion, Ind. (12-0)  Last week: 3. Results: Zach Randolph averaged 22 points, 15.5 rebounds and six blocks in victories vs. Richmond 58-42 and South (Fort Wayne) 80-66. Matt Backs averaged 14 points.

4. Jefferson, Portland, Ore. (10-0)  Last week: 4. Results: Defeated Portland opponents Marshall 91-50 and Madison 88-64 as Brandon Brooks averaged 25 points and Antone Jarrell 19 points. Aaron Miles averaged seven assists.

5. Westinghouse, Chicago (12-1)  Last week: 1. Results: Upset by Curie (Chicago) 50-49 despite 18 points by Cedrick Banks. Banks and Dennis Trimmell each scored 13 points in 52-44 victory vs. Crane (Chicago). 

6. Artesia, Lakewood, Calif. (13-1)  Last week: 6. Results: Routed John Glenn (Norwalk) 94-54 and Norwalk 123-33 as Amaury Fernandez averaged 20 points and 12.5 rebounds. Played Monday at LaMirada.

7. Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, N.J. (6-1)  Last week: 7. Results: Mark Curry averaged 16 points and eight rebounds in wins against Livingston 65-35 and Roxbury (Succasunna) 67-33.

8. Willowridge, Sugar Land, Texas (20-1)  Last week: 8. Results: Defeated Sugar Land opponents Hightower 64-39 and Clements 74-51 as Daniel Ewing averaged 18.5 points. Ivan McFarlin averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Terrance Ford averaged 9.5 assists.

9. Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Calif. (17-1)  Last week: 9. Results: Defeated Foothill (Santa Ana) 64-53 and Fontana 65-62 despite absence of 6-11 junior Jamal Sampson because of flu. Cedric Bozeman averaged 15.5 points and Mike Strawberry eight rebounds.

10. Rice, Manhattan, N.Y. (10-2)  Last week: 12. Results: Handed La Salle Academy (Manhattan) its first loss, 71-52, during 3-0 week. Andre Barrett averaged 17.6 points and 10.6 assists. Andre Sweet averaged 16.6 points and 11 rebounds.

11. Gainesville, Fla. (14-1)  Last week: 11. Results: Orien Greene averaged 11 points, six assists and six steals during 3-0 week. Ian Scott averaged 11 points and eight rebounds.

12. DeMatha, Hyattsville, Md. (13-1)  Last week: 13. Results: Defeated Bladensburg 69-47 and Good Counsel (Wheaton) 66-43 as Billy Edelin averaged 17 points and 8.5 assists. Travis Garrison averaged 12 points and 14 rebounds.  

13. Northwestern, Flint, Mich. (5-0)  Last week: 14. Result: Routed Bridgeport 94-55 as Desmon Farmer scored 26 points and Kelvin Torbert 23. Lannerick Harris had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

14. Christian Brothers, Lincroft, N.J. (9-0)  Last week: 15. Results: Mike Skrocki and Jason Krayl averaged 16 points each during 3-0 week. Pat Lynch averaged eight assists while controlling the offense and defense.

15. Ballard, Louisville (14-2)  Last week: 10. Results: Went 2-1 in Louisville Invitational, losing to eventual champion Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville) 73-68 in overtime in semifinals. Mac Wilkinson averaged 13 points.

16. Montrose Christian, Rockville, Md. (8-2)  Last week: 17. Result: Defeated Takoma Academy (Takoma Park) 99-60 as Levi Watkins had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mohamed Diakite had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Played Monday vs. Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro).

17. Clovis West, Fresno, Calif. (19-2)  Last week: 18. Result: Chris Hernandez had 16 points and 10 assists in 86-41 victory vs. Bullard (Fresno). Charlie Rodriguez added 15 points.

18. Hopkins, Minnetonka, Minn. (8-0)  Last week: 20. Results: Defeated Champlin Park (Champlin) 92-56 and Tech (St. Cloud) 78-42 as Jeff Hagen averaged 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. Matt DeWane averaged 13 points and Andrew Skogland averaged seven blocks.

19. Vashon, St. Louis (10-1)  Last week: 22. Result: Lorenzo Gordon had 24 points and 11 rebounds in 96-46 rout of Roosevelt (St. Louis). Kevin McKinney added 18 points.

20. Mount Zion Christian, Durham, N.C. (15-1)  Last week: Not ranked. Result: Defeated Halifax County (South Boston, Va.) 78-53 as Johnathan Hargett and Antonio Hargrove each scored 19 points. Jarrett Jack had 14 points and 13 assists. 

21. Southern Lab, Baton Rouge (16-2)  Last week: 21. Results: Defeated East Iberville (St. Gabriel) 72-53 and Tara (Baton Rouge) 61-46 as Trayvean Scott averaged 18.5 points. Marcus Spears averaged 15.5 points.

22. Lower Richland, Hopkins, S.C. (10-2)  Last week: 23. Result: Defeated Roberts (Holly Hill) 76-60 as Rolando Howell had 22 points and four blocked shots. John Taylor and Lionel Scriven each scored 19 points.

23. Mitchell Baker, Camilla, Ga. (12-0)  Last week: Not ranked. Result: Winning streak at 39 with 91-66 victory vs. Pelham. Gabriel Lee had 29 points and 12 rebounds. Antonio Haynes had 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

24. East, Denver (5-2)  Last week: 24. Result: Defeated George Washington (Denver) 67-54 as Ross Schraeder scored 21 points and Jimmy Dadiotis 20. Stan King had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

25. Roman Catholic, Philadelphia (9-3)  Last week: 16. Result: Lost to St. John Neumann (Philadelphia) 72-63 as Eddie Griffin was sidelined in fourth quarter with sprained ankle. Defeated Archbishop Carroll (Radnor) 79-45 without Griffin, who might be out 10 days. Tamal Forchion averaged 22.5 points and nine rebounds.

Dropped out: No. 19 71st (Fayetteville, N.C.) (9-3) lost to South View (Hope Mills) 54-49; No. 25 Duncanville (Texas) (16-5) lost to Mansfield
58-50 and Martin (Arlington) 55-52.
