We're sitting here at courtside and fortunately there's a phone line and power so we don't have to struggle to get the results posted.  Heres' what we know from the first two games played today during the morning/early afternoon session (Glendora is, as we write this losing badly to Santa Margarita, 55-27, and we'll have a report on that one shortly):

Game 1:  Ocean View 69, Servite 61:

This game was a lot closer than the 8 point final margin, and despite trailing 34-17 at the half, Servite made a strong run in the second half, with a 30 point fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Ocean View managed the win in the first game of the day at the Nike Extravaganza V.  Martin Iti (6'-11" So. C) scored 21 points, shooting 8 for 9 from the field and grabbing four rebounds before fouling out and allowing Ocean View to secure the win behind Marques Crane's 22 points and another 20 from Jeremiah Bell.  Bell shot 64% from the field, while Crane hit two key three pointers.   Torin Beeler had a remarkably slow game, hitting for only 8 points, shooting 2 for 7 from the field and only 1 for 3 from three point range.  Servite got great production from the bench with a combined 22 points from Erike Hilde (2),  Spencer Burke (5), Brian Traska (2), John Morriss (6), Adam Ernst(3), Sebastian Zielonka (2), Billy Burfiend (3) and Kyle Hoertz (2).  For Ocean View, other scorers were Ryan Westbrook with 7 (3 for 8 from thei fireld), Andrew James with 2, and jason Roth with 4 points and 4 assists.   Marques Crane had another of "those" games, dishing out 4 assists and shooting 6 for 11 from the field overall, and 8 for 11 from the line while grabbing 4 boards.

Servite 9 8 14 30 --61
Oceanview 22 12 23 12 --69

Game 2--Villa Park 62, St. John Bosco 56:

St. John Bosco is a lot better than what we'd been led to believe, but ultimately they weren't quite up to the task of beating Villa Park although they came darn close, pulling to within two points behind some great shooting from Donald Quiroz who scored 22 points, including shooting 6 for 8 from three point range.   Quiroz is a quick excellent shooter, who could probably play for some low to mid D-I program looking for a pure shooter who can come in and blast away.  He and Giovanni St. Amat (rumored to be Schea Cotton's cousin) were what kept Bosco in this one, and Gio scored 22 points as well, mostly on slashing drives to the basket.  If he isn't really related to Schea, he could be, because he's very tough, and incredibly athletic.  He plays a bit on the edge when driving to the basket and picked up at least one charge, but he does have great body control and a nice shot.

For Villa Park this was a three or four player deal, with the biggest surprise (pleasant) being the progress that Sean Phaler has made in the three months of tough varsity play since we last  saw him in the fall.  Phaler has improved his footwork tremendously, and by the time he's a senior, will be one of the top prospects in the class of 2003, along with other freshmen big men like Harrison Schaen of Mater Dei.  Phaler scored 16 points, mostly in a variety of ways from in and around the basket with a nice touch.  He obviously needs to fill out some, but hey, he's still pretty young.  Tommy Stankan (6'-1" Jr. SG) also had a good game, playing tough defense and scoring 13 points, (2 for three from the field, only 2 for 9 from three, but he made 3 for 4 from the line), and he also grabbed 8 rebounds (4 offensive and 4 defensive).  Nice player.  Matt McGinnis is usually "Mr. Automatic" from three, and while he scored and played well, he was called for an interesting technical foul for "commenting" too loudly on a call, which didn't seem to bother his game that much, but he did get taken out of the game for a while "just in case" by Kevin Reynolds   McGinnis scored 9 points, including two threes and just one field goal. Matt also picked up two assists and didn't commit a turnover in the game.   Others scoring were Tony Bryant with 7, Brice Prather 2, Andrew Grant with 2 and Corey Miller with just a point.

For Bosco, in addition to Gio and Quiroz, Gary Vasquez who plays point for Bosco had 10 points adn 3 assists, but was troubled by turnovers (6).   Derrick Williams had 2; no other players scored for Bosco, which ultimately proved to be their undoing in this game.  But keep an eye on Giovanni St. Amat and college coaches should also check out Mr. Quiroz if you're looking for a smooth shooter.

Villa Park 15 19 12 16 --62
St. John Bosco 13 9 21 13 --56
