Nike Extravaganza V:
First Evening Game Recap--(Feb. 5, 2000)
Game Five: Fairfax 68, Durango (Las Vegas) 65

Now this was a game. . . great athletes, big comeback by the Durango guys who got off to a slow start, and an exciting finish, with Jason Morrissette providing a dunk at the finish in overtime which punctuated a 16 point performance by the Santa Clara-signee, and a huge 26 point scoring effort by Craig Smith, who was just a monster from 10' and in.
Durango was led by Martrel Johnson with 20 (7 for 16 from the field--two's only) and 6 for 8 from the line. Jamaal Brimmer had 19 points for Durango, but his shooting was something less than stell, only 14% on 2 for 14 from the field. Fairfax broke out to a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended that by outscoring Durango 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 38-24 halftime lead. But following the break, Fairfax went into it's typical third quarter rut, and only managed 8 points to Durango's 19, and Durango closed to within 46-45 at the end of the quarter. Ishmael Torres had 4 points for the Lions and 3 assists, while Evan Burns, the very talented sophomore big man managed 7 points. Fowzi Abdelsamad, covering the point for the Lions scored 11 and dished out 6 assists, and it appears that Fairfax seems to have solved it's point problems, at least for the moment. Fowzi shot 50% from three (3/6) and showed more patience than we've seen before in feeding the big men in the post, and he was great on defense too. Others scoring for Fairfax were Scottie Stern with 2, and Alex Bausley 2.

Sorry to say
for all you Griffin fans out there, this was not much of a game from the very beginning,
as Los Al fell behind 17-6 and was just out-hustled and out-muscled by the stronger
and quicker guys from Poly. We don't have the time to post up many details, so
we'll just post up the scoring. For Poly, it was the usual suspects: Wesley
Stokes with 18, on 6 for 12 shooting from the field and 5 for 5 from the line;
Ramaan Shotwell with 5, AJ Diggs with 4, Carlos Rivers with 5, Jonathan Harper 2, Adriam
Martin 3, Travis Wilder 5, Mike Roche 2, Mercedes Lewis with 2, Markee White 2, Charles
Jones 2, Ryan Love 4, and big Joe Travis 17.
For Los Al, Ryan Keller had 6, Jeff Smith 4, Eddie Courtemarche 2, Ronnie Prettyman 10 on 3 for 11 from the field and 3 for 8 from the line; Steve Shinen 7, Jeff Grgas 8 (he fouled out with about 5 minutes left in the fourth and Los Al badly behind), and Brian Rakusin 4.
