Division I-A 1st Round Matchups:
A Look At The Teams Playing--(Feb 16, 2000)
All of the games in this division take place tonight at 7:30 p.m.. Like Division I-AA, this is also a very large bracket, a 64 team bracket, and there are some first round byes. Because our time is limited today, we'll only be doing some of the most bare-bones stuff. Key players, records, likely matchups, and that sort of thing. Here's what's up:
Corona @ Keppel-- The winner gets Mater Dei on Friday in the second round. Whoopeee. Keppel finished at 15-10, 7-2, and tied for first in the Almont League, so they're the favored team. They feature a lot of guys who are scoring, but not one dominant player, and no one is bigger than 6'-2". Jerry Diaz (5'-11" Sr. G) is averaging 12.4, and Lamgee Wong (5'-6" Jr. G) is averaging 12.3, and they're the leading scorers. Keppel's two "centers" are Myron Chinn (6'-2" Jr. C) who is averaging just 1.7 ppg and .8 rpg, and Phong Lam (6'-1" Sr. F/C) at 5.7 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Alex Ng is the other starter and he's averaging 7.8 ppg. Corona comes in at 10-15, 5-5, and they finished second in Mtn View League. We don't have a roster for them, but they've already beaten Keppel in the early season 67-31, so Keppel had better try to make the most of that homecourt advantage.
West Covina @ Thousand Oaks--The winner gets the winner of Anaheim v. Loara. West Covina is 13-7, 4-4 in Sierra League, good for 3rd place. They have some players with size, including Terrance Martin (6'-5" Sr. G), Kedrick Brown (6'-2" Jr. F), and have some senior guards as aell, but Mario De La Torre (5'-11" Sr. G) is a name that jumps out at us. Their media sheet didn't disclose scoring averages, but they're a running and outside shooting team from what we know. Thousand Oaks comes in at 15-8, 7-3, and they finished 2nd in Marmonte League to Simi Valley. The Lancers feature two of the better scorers in the region in Kyle Kegley (6'-4" Jr. G) who is averaging 16.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg and Tim Chevalier (5'-11" Sr. G) who is getting 14.2 ppg and 2.6 rpg. They also have Kahil Fennel (6'-4" Sr. F), David Anderson (5'-11" Sr. G) who is is averaging 9.2 and 3.3, and Marcus Ellis (6'-4" Sr. F) one of the better rebounders (5.8 pg).
Anaheim @ Loara-- Probably the best matchup of the evening, Anaheim comes in at 14-10 and 4-5 and finished fourth in Orange League. They've beaten several good teams but they've also lost to lower division teams (St. Anthony's for one). The Colonists have Stephen Miller (6'-3" Sr. G) who is averaging 20 ppg and 7 rebounds, and he's one of the OC leaders. They also have Jesus Salcedo (6'-1" Sr. F) at 13 ppg and Robert Mendoza (6'-7" Sr. C) who is averaging 15 ppg and 10 boards. Loara finished at 19-11, 8-2, good for second, and they feature some excellent players (again, their roster wasn't copied by the CIF, so we don't have it. . . oh well, just cruised through the Daily Articles on "Game Details" if you really want to know who their leading scorers are. The winner gets the winner of West Covina v. Thousand Oaks at a location on Friday to be determined by a coin flip.
Indio @ Santiago Corona-- Indio finished 14-10, 6-4, in third place in the Desert Valley League. They have two outstanding scorers in Frank Rodriguez (5'-9" Sr. G) who is getting 16.4 ppg and Zac Balver (6'-6" Sr. C) who weighs in at 310 pounds and who is getting 6.1 ppg and 10.2 rpg. Other top players are Darrell Garcia (5'-10" Sr. G), Michael Torrex (5'-10" Sr. G), and (yes, this is his real name) Rodney King (6'-3" Fr. F) who is averaging 5 ppg and 5 rpg. Santiago finished at 14-11, and 5-5 in Mountain View League, in second place and they've got two players in double figures: Jimmy Le Duc (6'-4" Sr. F) at 15.2, and Justin Griffin (6'-0" Jr. G) at 10.2. The winner gets Troy on Friday night.
Riverside Poly @ Victor Valley-- The winner gets Claremont on Friday. Poly is 3-7, 13-13, and they finished 5th in the Ivy League, and come in as an at-large team. Top players are Josh Dunaj (5'-11" Jr. G) who is averaging 13.9 ppg, and Marvin Lea (6'-2" So. SG/SF) who is averaging 18.9 ppg. Victor Valley comes in at 11-3, 17-8 and finished second in Mojave River League play. Top players are Tyan Dillon (6'-4" Sr. G), Mike Thompson 6'-3" So. F), Carlos Alexander (6'-2" Sr. G), Maurice Kilgore (5'-10" Sr. G), Corey Stinson (5'-8" Sr. G) Jason Collins (6'-0" So. F), Matt Barron (5'-6" Jr. G) Ronald Chavez (6'-0" Jr. G), Edmond Elzy (6'-5" Sr. F), Mark Snow (6'-1" Jr. F) Edward Hill (5'-10" Sr. F) and Aaron Edwards(6'-0" Jr. F), and Thadeus Jones (6'-0" Sr. G).
Moreno Valley @ Lancaster-- Lancaster comes in at 15-10, 7-3, good for third place in Golden League competition. Top players are Anthony Gamboa (5'-11" Jr. SG), Aaron James (6'-1" Jr. G), Teddy Myers (5'-7" Jr. PG), and Joe Dluzak (6'-5" Sr. C). Moreno Valley finished 14-12, 6-4, and in third in the Ivy League. Top players are Andre Johnson (5'-9" Sr. G), Darrell Brooks (6'-2" Jr. F), Steve Brown (6'-5" Sr. C) and Nyron Jones (5'11" Sr. G). The winner of this game gets Pacific on Friday at Pacific. Good luck.
Trabuco Hills @ University-- Trabuco Hills finished 5-5, and 13-13, fourth in the South Coast League, and lost their last two games. They feature Brennon Martin (6'-6" Sr. SF/SG) who has signed with Texas A&M, and they also have Anthony Kewkirt (6'-1" Sr. G). University finished 16-10, 5-3 in second place in the Pacific Coast League and they have Andy Lawrence (6'-1" Sr. SG) who is averaging 20.7 ppg and this should also be an interesting matchup. Michael Dale (6'-4" Sr. F) is averaging 12.2, while Jasone Garey (5'-11" Jr. G) and Ryan Zinchefsky (6'-4" Sr. F) are both averaging close to 10 ppg each. The starters are rounded out by Sharif Elsherbiny (6'-2" Sr. F) who is averaging 6.8 ppg and 6.9 rebounds. The winner gets Woodbridge on Friday.
Hart @ Quartz Hill--Hart finishes at 5-5, 11-15 and fourth in Foothill League. They will start Sahael Almuallem (6'-8" Sr. C), Devin Johnson (5'-89' Sr. G), Tony Johnson (6'-1" Jr. G), Jon Loftin (6'-2" Sr. F) and Mychael Williams (5'-8" So. G), and they've also got Jaren Corpening (6'-9" Sr. F) in reserve. The winner gets Arlington or Mission Viejo on Friday at a location TBA.

F) as well as David Johnson (6'-6" Jr. C). The winner gets Hart or Quartz Hill on Friday.
St. John Bosco @ Hueneme-- Bosco finished 0-6, dead last in the four team Serra League, but that's not really an indication of how good they are, and at 14-11, they have a decent overall record. Giovonni St. Amat (6'-2" So. G) is averaging 18.7 ppg and 5.6 rpg, and Gary Vasquez (5'-10" Sr. PG) runs the floor and is averaging 12.7 ppg. Donald Quiroz (6'-0' So. G) is also getting 10.4 ppg while Mark Dyer (6'-2" Sr. F) is averaging 6.4 boards per game. Hueneme finished 5-3 in Pacific View League (second) and 15-9 overall and with the home court advantage will be the favorites (sorry, no media roster form for them. . . ). Garey finished 19-7 overall and 9-1, first in Miramonte League and why they didn't get a first round bye like the rest of the league winners is a mystery. Buena's media sheet got misplaced, so we can't tell you their top players, but they finished 4-5, and 10-17 overall, third in the Channel League behind Santa Barbara and Ventura. Saugus submitted a ton of information, including stats for the entire team (complete stats), but we're not going to print them all here; suffice it to say they finished third in Foothill League at 6-4, and 17-9 overall. Key players are Jordi Higueras (6'-005" Sr. F/C) Antonio Greer (6'-4" Jr. F), and a number of quick guards. Perris' media sheet was missing, so we can't say much other than what we've reported on during the year (check the Daily Articles), and they finished 7-3 in Skyline League, 10-15 overall and in third place.
Katella @ Rancho Verde-- The winner gets No. 2 seed Centennial Corona. Katella finished at 6-4, 12-13 and in third place in the Empire League. Rancho Verde's roster half of their form was missing (at least we don't have it) but we do have their complete record and they're a very good team, finishing third in the crowded Sunbelt League at 5-5 and 16-11 overall.
