Recap: Boys' Game Details From
Tuesday, Feb. 8--(Feb. 9, 2000)
We don't have all of the details from every game played, in fact we've only got about a third of the contests which took place on Tuesday night, and we also realize this has been posted a bit late, but better late than never we always say. If you have some of the game details from those games not otherwise shown below, send them in. Here's what we know though, which isn't a lot:
Academy League
Calvary Chapel Downey 108, Orangewood Academy 66-- Timothy Drisdom scored 32 points and Jonathon James had 22 as the Grizzlies (20-5, 11-0) had no trouble defeating the host Spartans.
Arrowhead League
Hamilton 63, CSDR 44--Jon McCrudden had 12 points and 21 rebounds but California School for the Deaf, Riverside (0-9, 1-18) dropped an Arrowhead League game to Anza Hamilton. Baseline League
Upland 76, Glendora 57 --Four players scored in double figures as the Upland Highlanders (17-7 overall, 6-3 Baseline League) avenged an earlier loss to the Tartans with a 76-57 Baseline League win at Glendora Sheldon Pace led the way with 22 points and 10 assists. Prentice Harris added 15 points, Jason Harris had 12, and Jesse Pruitt chipped in with 10. Combined with Claremont's victory over Walnut, the Tartans (20-4, 7-2) were eliminated from wrestling the league title away from the Wolfpack. Upland, which avenged a home loss to the Tartans in the first league meeting between the two, was led by junior guard Sheldon Pace, who scored 22 points. Michael Mehanna came off the bench to lead the Glendora scoring with 17 points, but most came in the late going. Jason Davis, who scored eight of the Tartans' first 19 points, finished with 14 points. The loss knocked Glendora (20-5 overall and 7-2 in league) out of the league title picture, with no chance to capture a piece of the title by beating Claremont on Thursday night. Upland, looking much like a team nobody would want to play in the playoffs, handled the Tartans from the opening tip-off. The Highlanders (17-7, 6-3) built a nine-point, 15-6 lead after one quarter, then stretched it to a 36-19 lead at halftime. Upland had the hot hand in both of the opening quarters, making 7 of 11 shots (59 percent) from the floor in both. On the other end of the shooting spectrum, Glendora never recovered after a 2-of-15 opening-quarter shooting performance (23 percent). With the damage done, Glendora fought back in the third quarter on the play of Duncan Reid, who scored seven of his nine points in the quarter. UPLAND (76) Sheldon Pace 22, Pruitt 10, J. Bay League
Inglewood 66, Redondo 62--After the Sentinels' 66-62 come-from-behind victory over host Redondo on Tuesday to clinch their eighth consecutive Bay League championship, the Sentinels are building momentum heading into the playoffs while Redondo is wondering how they could have lost 5 games this season, including 4 league contests. Inglewood's win was that much more resounding considering it lost by 27 in the teams' first matchup, and it had to erase a seven-point deficit with three minutes remaining to pull out the win Tuesday. Redondo (19-5, 9-4) opened up a 62-55 lead when Adam Zahn received a pass from his older brother, Andrew, and dunked it at the 3:00 mark. That would be the last points the Sea Hawks would score. Inglewood, playing without two starters, scored six quick points, including Terrell Stovall's rebound putback that he converted into a three-point play, cutting the deficit to one at 62-61. Then the Sentinels forced a 10-second violation before point guard Brian Taylor hit a pull-up jumper with 33 seconds left to give Inglewood its first lead since late in the second quarter. Otis Hankins stole a Redondo pass on the ensuing possession, and Taylor hit two free throws to give Inglewood a three-point lead. In all, the Sea Hawks turned the ball over on their last three possessions. Taylor led all scorers with 22 points, and Anthony Davis scored eight of his 16 points in the first quarter to lead Inglewood to an early 21-16 lead. Center Tony Akpan added 12 points and nine rebounds. Dijon Thompson scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in the first half for Redondo, which led, 37-35, at halftime. Andrew Zahn had 14 points and Adam Zahn added 13 points.
Morningside 52, Peninsula 47--Tracy Cathey led the host Monarchs behind 7-of-9shooting for 14 points. Marquez Calcote added 11 points and seven assists while Dante Tatum grabbed nine rebounds for Morningside (17-8, 9-4). Peninsula dropped to 12-14 overall, 4-9 in league.
Centennial 76, North Torrance 57--Senior forward
Ellis Myles (18 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) led the visiting Apaches (18-11, 9-4) past
the Saxons
(0-13 in league).
Century League
Foothill 101, Orange 42--Roger Hogan tied the school record for assists with 23 to lead the host Knights (13-12, 6-3) over the Panthers (5-19, 2-7).
Channel League
Dos Pueblos 65, San Marcos 63 --Brett Holbrook
remained the voice of experience and, ultimately, that proved just enough to give Dos
Pueblos High a 65-63 Channel League basketball win over San Marcos Tuesday night at the
Royals' Thunderhut. Asher Kupperman, a sophomore point guard, scored 27 points and
nailed a 3-pointer under heavy pressure at the buzzer which capped a 13-point Royals rally
in the fourth quarter and the sent the game into overtime. But Holbrook, a senior forward
with three years of varsity experience, worked his way free for four layups in overtime,
including the game's final score with 8.2 seconds left, to give Dos Pueblos the win.
San Marcos still had a chance to tie but Kupperman stepped on the endline with one
second to play as he tried to work through a thicket of defenders for a buzzer-beating
layup. San Marcos drops to 6-17 on the season..Holbrook finished with 26 points and 15
rebounds, a performance Dos Pueblos coach Phil Sherman said he is coming to expect every
night. Dos Pueblos, which concluded its league season at 3-5 and improved to 11-13
overall, began the game about as poorly as any team can offensively, going 0-for-6 on
3-pointers and 0-for-16 overall while falling behind 9-2. But it barely dented the
Chargers' new philospohy of, if first you don't succeed, trey, trey, trey and trey again.
Dos Pueblos hit 2-of-5 3-pointers in the second period and six of its next eight tries
over the next three periods, using the long range attack to take a 23-19 lead by halftime
and a lead of 50-37 early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Steve Graybill hit two of the
3-pointers and finished with 16 points while Damon Jenkins hit two in a row in the third
period. When the Chargers misfired on two straight 3-pointers, however, San Marcos seized
on the opening. Adam Nance scored on an assist from Kupperman and Ryan King made a
steal and a basket. After a free throw by Holbrook made it 51-41, Kupperman drove for a
basket and Nance followed with a basket off a pass from King. A rebound by Nance led to
two free throws by Kupperman to make it 51-50 with 9.8 seconds left. Graybill hit two free
throws with 7.2 seconds left but Kupperman went coast-to-coast and hit his 3-pointer,
despite a hand in his face and two other defenders on each flank. San Marcos, however,
might have won if it had shot a little better in situations with no one playing defense.
The Royals were only 15-for-31 on free throws and missed their first four shots in the
fourth quarter. On the other hand, of course, there were the clutch shots that dropped. In
addition to Kupperman's buzzer beater, the Royals rallied twice to tie in overtime -- once
at 55-55 on a drive by Kupperman and the other at 63-63 on a 3-pointer by King followed by
a free throw by Kupperman. DOS PUEBLOS--Graybill 16, Ortiz 6, Brooks 2,

Pacific League
Crescenta Valley 69, Pasadena 68--The Falcons had
just enough clutch shooting from the field and the free-throw line to defeat the Bulldogs,
69-68, and tighten the top of the league standings. Chris Tarne's third 3-pointer
gave Crescenta Valley a 52-50 lead at the end of the third quarter. But Pasadena stepped
up their full-court defensive pressure and quickly took back the lead. The Bulldogs
(20-6, 8-1) went on an 11-3 run to open the final quarter with Josh Duncan's jumper giving
Pasadena a 61-55 lead. But Pasadena's aggressive defense, which created several easy
scoring opportunities, also got the Bulldogs into foul trouble, with Crescenta
Valley entering the bonus with over five minutes left. Jimmy Goffredo made a
3-pointer, Tarne who led all scorers with 27, made two free throws and James Jenkins beat
the shot clock on a fallaway jumper to give the Falcons a 62-61 lead. Duncan, who
scored 18 points, made a jumper then two free throws to put PHS ahead 65-62 with just over
two minutes left. Then Pasadena's aggression turned against them. Reggie Harmon
received a noticeably late foul whistle as Goffredo attempted a 3-pointer. The guard made
all three free throws to tie the game, 65-65, and take the wind from the Bulldogs' sails.
The Falcons (20-5, 7-2) denied the ball from Harmon, Pasadena's offensive
sparkplug, and Duncan missed. Jenkins answered with a jumper to put CV ahead, 67-65 with
1:20 left. But Duncan and Dino Wilburn both missed off-balance shots that could have tied
the game. Tarne sealed the game with two free throws with six seconds left,
rendering Harmon's 3-pointer at the buzzer meaningless.

Rio Hondo League
Monrovia 71, South Pasadena 37--Monrovia clinched its first Rio Hondo League championship since 1987 in impressive fashion with a 71-37 victory over South Pasadena Tuesday night. The victory prevented a possible first-place tie between the Wildcats and Tigers. Monrovia (21-2, 8-1) took control of the game early by concentrating on its inside game and then finding open perimeter shots when the middle was clogged. Six of Monrovia's 10 first-quarter baskets came from within 10 feet of the basket. Steve Ford and Kenny Porchia combined for 16 first-quarter points down low. The Wildcats played unselfishly, always searching for the open shot. Richard Spicer, off a rebound, found Germaine Dixon with a quick, sharp pass in transition. Dixon, who received the pass under the basket, scored and was fouled. He made his free throw to give Monrovia a commanding 20-point lead with 1:19 left in the first quarter. South Pasadena, which was outscored 27-8 in the first quarter, found the basket only once in the first seven minutes. The Tigers hit a mere 3 of 16 shots they took in the period, finding most of their attempts around the three-point arc. South Pasadena slowed down the second quarter, limiting the Wildcats to nine points and holding a one-point advantage for the period. But the Wildcats returned to their first-quarter form in the second half, pushing the lead as high as 36 points. The Wildcats' Bryant Markson and Ford led the Monrovia offense, scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Cajon 56, San Gorgonio 55--A bizarre finish decided the outcome of the battle for second place in the San Andreas League on Tuesday night. San Bernardino Cajon's Aaron Griffin then made two free throws to lift the Cowboys to a 56-55 victory. San Gorgonio (6-3 in league, 14-10 overall) led 52-49 with just more than a minute to play, but Cajon's Blake Walker sank a three-pointer to tie the score. Donovan Morris hit a jumper to put Cajon ahead 54-52. In the final seconds, San Gorgonio's Jabria Fields made a layup and was fouled, and players on the Spartans' bench celebrated. They were assessed a technical foul and, after Fields converted the three-point play to make it 55-54, Aaron Griffin made both technical foul shots.
