Recap: Boys' Game Scores From
Wednesday, Feb. 9--(Feb. 10, 2000)

Here are the results from the third day of the week of the final stretch run.   Results from virtually every City Section and Southern Section game.  Most of the league races have now been decided and there are only two more days remaining in the regular season.  Quite a few of the teams in the Southern Section wrapped up their regular season last night, including all the teams in the Mission League, which was won by Harvard-Westlake for the first time in three years, and the big race for the Santa Fe League between La Salle and Bell-Jeff was decided last night too, and La Salle won it's third straight title at Bell-Jeff.   And there were some other results which were exciting, and which may or may not have implications for the playoffs and seeding. . . . like Verbum Dei knocking off St. Anthony in Camino Real. . . or St. Bernard beating St. Paul, which up until a week ago had been ready to challenge for a share of the title, but ultimately Bishop Montgomery secured yet another title with it's win last night. In City Section, we went out yesterday to watch Taft take on Chatsworth, and to take another look at Steve Smith, the Taft freshman everyone is talking about. . . the game wasn't all that exciting (we sat with Dave Hopla who was in town for a day, and he described it "as exciting as watching paint dry"), but Smith showed some flashes of brilliance, with some very nice putbacks and a couple of twisting drives to the hole. . . and he can jump out of the gym, so he appears to be for real.   Gregg Guenther  (6'-8" Sr. PF) of Taft who has signed with USC for both football and will also play hoops, and Adam Drell (6'-7" Sr. PF) from Chatsworth, were duking it out on the boards, and Drell had 18 points and 18 boards, and looked good even though his team lost.  Adam is getting recruiting by Tufts and several other D-I's and by UC San Diego (which, although it's D-III, has one of the best arenas around and a great science program for pre-med students). . . Chatsworth's Shayne Berry shot well (he had 23 points) but kicked a chair when he didn't like a call, got called for a T early in the first half, but remarkably continued to play in the game. . . which just typified this sorta, kinda "lost" season for Chatsworth. . . Ronald Ruffin is also academically ineligible so he wasn't playing, and they lost one other player to grades as well.  For Taft, Ronald Gray, a senior, scored 30 points in a great performance.   For all you recruiting guys out there, Ronald is probably going to be at Glendale CC next year, at least that's what he told us.

We'll post up other details shortly.  For now though, here are the scores.  As always, if you have a result that we don't have listed, send it in or post it on the message forum.
