Girls Division I-A Quarterfinal Details &
Bracket Updated--(Feb 29, 2000)

Here are the scores and the updated bracket from the quarterfinals played last Saturday, February 26, 2000.  We've also updated the bracket to show the scores and the semifinal matchups this week.

Division I-A
Quarterfinals

JW North 57, Mater Dei 48--Shannon Matthews scored 17 points for top-seeded J.W. North in the I-A quarterfinal at North. Top-seeded North (25-3) defeated Mater Dei for the fifth consecutive time. With less than three minutes remaining, the Monarchs (22-8) trailed by two points, but North converted from the foul line, finishing 15 of 16. Maile Shimoda scored 14 points and Lindsay Pavlik closed out her Mater Dei career with eight points and 13 rebounds for Mater Dei.  Kristian Kirkpatrick added 12 as the Monarchs (22-7) fell to the top-seeded Huskies.

San Clemente 70, Cerritos 60--Whitney Jones led San Clemente to the I-A quarterfinal victory at home by scoring 30 points. LaKiste Barkus of Cerritos who has committed to Long Beach State, also had 30 points. he fourth-seeded Tritons (26-3), down by as many as 15 points, took the lead midway through the third quarter. Kimberly Noble scored 16 to go with 11 rebounds.

Edison 47, Santa Barbara 41--Racheal Ziemann scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Chargers advanced to the I-A semifinals with the victory home. Trailing by one at the half, Edison (21-8) outscored Santa Barbara, 15-8, in the decisive third quarter. Rachael Ziemann  and Michelle Zylstra (11 points, 14 rebounds) combined for 10 points in the quarter.

Troy 61, Don Lugo 54--Veronica Johns-Richardson scored 21 points to lead Troy to the I-A quarterfinal victory at Don Lugo. Diana Taurasi led Don Lugo with 23 points but was held to only three field goals in the second half as second-seeded Troy turned back host Don Lugo, 61-54, in a Division 1A quarterfinal game Saturday night. Taurasi, who signed a letter-of-intent to go to the University of Connecticut in November, finished her prep career with 3,047 points in 111 games, good enough for fourth on the state career scoring list.   But while she helped take the Conquistadores from nowhere to a ranked-power, she couldn't do it all by herself. Troy effectively took the ball out of Taurasi's hands in the second half, turning a 27-21 halftime deficit into a 47-37 lead with 4:58 remaining, including a 10-0 run into the opening moments of the fourth quarter. Troy hit nine 3-pointers, seemingly sinking a big shot every time the Conquistadores applied pressure. Though Don Lugo rallied late, it couldn't make up a six-point spread in the final two minutes.  Don Lugo trimmed the lead to 56-50 on Tiffany Jackson's steal and layup with 1:50 left. But three times the Conquistadores had chances to cut it further, failing to convert even when Nicole Ramos made a key steal at half court, only to turn it right back over to Troy's Veronica Johns-Richardson. Two free throws by Taurasi with 40 seconds left cut the lead to four. But Johns-Richardson - who finished with a team-high 23 - sank two free throws one second later, and Alicia Komaki hit two more with 15 seconds remaining. Taurasi, who played much of the fourth quarter with four fouls, finally fouled out with five seconds left. She finished the game 8-for-22 shooting from the field, with seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks. Baird added 14 points, and three-point specialist Mindy Haarlammert finished with 13, including consecutive 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter that got Don Lugo back into it. FULLERTON TROY (61) Johns-Richardson 23, Schilling 6, Komaki 7, Livingston 8, Hardeman 15, Givens-Davis 2. DON LUGO (54) Taurasi 23, Haarlammert 13, Carson 2, Baird 14, Jackson 2. Troy 9 12 18 22 -- 61 Don Lugo 8 19 10 17 -- 54 Total fouls: T 13, D 12. Fouled out: Taurasi (D). Technical fouls: none.
