Girls Division II-AA bracket updated 2/29/00

Division II-AA's quarterfinals round was played last Saturday, February 26. The results are posted below and we've updated the bracket to show the semifinal matchups.

Brea Olinda 58, La Quinta 26--Chelsea Trotter scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds for the top-seeded Ladycats in the II-AA quarterfinal at La Quinta. The 11-time section girls' basketball champions, going for 12 in a row, advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs with a dominant performance on the road. The Ladycats defeated Palm Desert La Quinta, 58-26, in a quarterfinal Saturday, Brea's 16th consecutive victory since a 55-45 loss to San Clemente, Brea's fifth loss in six games and fourth in a row. The revitalized Ladycats made this one look a lot like an Orange League game. Brea opened a 19-2 first-quarter lead and led at halftime, 35-7. Chelsea Trotter led the Ladycats with 21 points. She also had 11 rebounds and five steals. Trotter was supported by Jackie Lord, who scored 16, and Tara Hefferly, who had 11. Brea will play fourth-seeded Norco in a semifinal on Wednesday. Norco (25-3) defeated Santa Margarita, 59-46. The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Foothill against third-seeded Redondo Beach Redondo.

Norco 59, Santa Margarita 46--Vanessa Ferragamo scored 13 points for the visiting Eagles. The Cougars (25-3) were led by Lauren Plunkett's 15 points.

Redondo 67, Sonora 42--Ofa Tulikihihifo scored 12 points as the Seahawks (24-5) advanced to the II-AA semifinals with the victory at home. Brandi Davis scored 22 points for Sonora, which finished 20-9. Mindy Clark added 10 points for the Raiders. Third-seeded Redondo (24-3) led, 37-15, at halftime and extended the lead to 57-28 at the end of the third.

Foothill 69, Bellflower 51--Kristen Mann scored 28 points and Emily Beaubelle added a season-high 15 for second-seeded Foothill (22-7). The Knights, who shot 61% from the floor, also got 14 points and 17 rebounds from Chavaughn Brown. The Knights shot 74 percent in the first half as they opened a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a return trip to the semifinals. The Knights broke apart the Buccaneers' zone defense with cuts, picks and a large rebounding edge. Foothill hit its first seven shots and used the height advantage of 6-foot-1 junior Kristen Mann and 5-11 senior Chavaughn Brown to collect five offensive rebounds and a 22-9 lead after the first quarter. The Knights followed the opening sprint with a 9-0 run in the second quarter to extend the lead to 31-11 midway through the period. Foothill did not let up after halftime as Mann hit her first two shots of the third quarter as the Knights led by 30 after three quarters. Mann led Foothill (22-7) with 28 points and eight rebounds, including a 10-point third quarter. Mann also took turns running the floor while teaming with Brown to shut down Bellflower's frontcourt offense. Brown added 14 points and 17 rebounds, including creating numerous second and third chances with offensive rebounds during the Knights' first-half runs. The Buccaneers had enough trouble stopping Foothill's top two weapons, but Emily Beaubelle compounded the problems with a season-high 15 points. The Knights advance and will face Redondo Beach in a semifinal Tuesday night.
