Boys Division I-A 2nd Round
Game Details--(Feb 20, 2000)

Here are the game details from the I-A First Round playoff games from Friday night, February 18.  Check the updates on the bracket for third round matchups in this division:

Mater Dei 111, Mark Keppel 56--Six-foot-11 center Jamal Sampson returned to the lineup for the top-ranked Monarchs (27-6) and was one of six Monarchs to score in double figures in their home victory.  The top-seeded Monarchs shot 70% and got 17 points Mike Strawberry and 10 points and 14 assists from Cedric Bozeman in the I-A victory. Mater Dei's scorers were Brian Baker 6, Mike Strawberry 17, Sampson 11, Scoggin 11, Cedric Bozeman 10, Ricky Porter 14, Leinart 15, Harrison Schaen 9, Christian McGuigan 8,  Travis Gabler 6, Patrick Haddan 2, Nick Farano 2.  For Keppel, Wong 3, Diaz 5, Woo 4, Lam 5, Ng 215, Sagun 6, Lee 9, Lopez 3.  Scoring by quarters:  Mater Dei 28,  28  27  28--111; Mark Keppel 10  20   5  15--50.

Thousand Oaks 72, Loara 71-- A clutch 3-point basket by Thousand Oaks' Tim Chevalier with 10 seconds remaining gave the Lancers (17-4-4) the final margin of victory. Loara had one chance to score, but Dan Melton's half-court shot at the buzzer fell short. The trio of Chevalier, Ben Olson, and Kahil Fennell combined for 51 of Thousand Oaks' total 72 points. Loara's Dan Melton had 25 points and 11 rebounds. The blistering tempo, back-and-forth action and to-the-wire finish added up to one intense and dramatic victory for Thousand Oaks. Chevalier's 3-point basket at the end of the game   provided the 23rd and final lead change -- there were also eight ties -- and it gives Thousand Oaks the opportunity to try to upset No. 1 seed  Mater Dei in Tuesday's third round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.   Loara finishes 18-10.  Chevalier scored 10 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter.  Loara had not one, but two more chances. Dan Melton, the 6-foot-8 center who had 25 points and 16 rebounds, missed a two-footer with three seconds left.  Ben Olson, one of many Thousand Oaks heroes, rebounded that miss, was fouled and missed a free throw with 2.7 seconds left. Melton rebounded and passed to Wes Wardrop, whose half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer was well off the mark.  Olson finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds; Kahil Fennel had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.  Neither team ever enjoyed much breathing room. Thousand Oaks' biggest lead was 51-43 in the third quarter; Loara was twice up by five, the last time at 70-65 with 2:08 remaining. Even the box score attests to the closeness of the action. Thousand Oaks had a 17-16 edge in the first quarter. After that, both teams scored 20 in the second, 18 in the third and 17 in the fourth.

Troy 89,  Indio  49--Ray Mike's 20 points led the Warriors (25-2) to the home victory.  For Troy, the coring was done by Christiensen 14, Leslie 6, Sarfaraz 7, Raco 3, Ahlbert 4, Gilkes 5, Mike 20, Byrnes 5, and McCullom 5.  For Indio, the scorers were Rodriguez 6, Silva 5, Torres 7, Natividad 3, Roberson 6, Garcia 2, and Zach Balver with 22 to lead Indio which finishes the season at 15-11.  Troy improves to 25-2.  Scoring by quarters:  Indio--13  10   16  10--49; Troy--13  21  17  18--69.

Victor Valley 72, Claremont 67--Thomas Taylor scored 20 points, and Sean Terrell added 13 points in the loss for Claremont (22-5). Shaddan Aaron scored 12 points in the loss for the Wolfpack. Ryan Dillon scored 25 points and Edmound Elzy scored 22 for the Jackrabbits in the I-A victory at Claremont. The Wolfpack hit just 27% of their shots from the field as they lost their second-round contest to the Jackrabbits at Claremont High.  Thomas Taylor paced Claremont (22-5) with 20 points. Victor Valley will face Troy on Tuesday.

Pacific 96, Moreno Valley 63-- No details from this game were available.  Evidently the San Bernardino and Riverside papers didn't post the box or the other details, and if they did, we couldn't locate them.

Woodbridge 75, University 54--While University bombed away at will from behind the arc, Woodbridge worked for the 10- and 15-foot shots and made enough of them to beat University, 76-54, in a CIF Southern Section Divsion I-A boys basketball playoff game Friday night at Woodbridge. Woodbridge (19-8) will play Pacific of San Bernardino (25-2) in a third-round game Tuesday.  University (17-11) shot horribly. The Trojans were 4 for 18 in the first quarter and 5 for 14 in the second. In an effort to stage a comeback in the third quarter, University put up 19 shots, but
made only two. Woodbridge, meanwhile, was 25 for 47 in the first three quarters.

Quartz Hill 58, Arlington 55--No box, no details, just a score.  If anyone has either details or the linescore, send them in.

Santa Barbara 54, St. John Bosco 47--The Dons played without the two talented hands of star guard Dommanic Ingerson but rallied behind a balanced effort to beat the Braves 64-47 in a second -round contest at Santa Barbara High. Santa Barbara, 25-2 and winner of 19 straight games, will play Quartz Hills Tuesday in Santa Barbara. Ingerson, who is averaging nearly 22 points, picked up two technical fouls in a season-ending win over San Marcos and had to sit out the next game by CIF rule. Since the Dons had a bye in the first round, that meant he was, again by CIF rule, not even allowed to be in the gym for Friday night's contest. Despite its first-half problems, Santa Barbara nonetheless got an early lead and held it to intermission -- but just barely, 30-27. Henderson, who technically replaced Ingerson in the lineup, led the way by drilling three 3-pointers. He finished as Santa Barbara's top scorer with 13 points. Giovanni St. Amani, however, kept answering for the Braves, scoring 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half. St. John Bosco tied the game on a 3-pointer by Donny Quiroz on the first possession of the second half and took the lead, 33-32, on another 3-pointer by Quiroz moments later. But Petersen scored inside, with an assist from Shawn Whilt, to reclaim the lead and Putnam and Henderson followed with baskets to build a 38-33 margin Quiroz hit his fourth and final 3-pointer to cut the margin to 38-36 but Brent Williams followed with a 3-pointer and Henderson scored near the end of the quarter to put the Dons safely ahead again. Walling started off the fourth period with two 3-pointers and hit three free throws after getting fouled on a third attempt. Putnam and Walling then produced the game's signature moment. Walling raced down the left sideline on a break and finished with an underhanded lob pass to Putnam for a thundering dunk and 54-42 lead. Whilt took it from there, hitting eight straight free throws to extend the lead to 62-47. The Dons hit 23-of-25 free throws for the game, including two by Putnam in the final seconds to provide the final score. Whilt finished with 10 points and five assists while Williams had 11 points and six rebounds. ST. JOHN BOSCO--Vasquez 4, Amanti 23, Quiroz 14, Klosterman 4, Williams 2. Totals 19 5-9 47. SANTA BARBARA--Henderson 13, Whilt 10, Walling 9, C. Petersen 4, Williams 11, Putnam 11, Curiel 6. Totals 19 23-25 67. St. John Bosco . . . 10 17 6 11--47 Santa Barbara . . . 14 16 13 21--64 3-point goals--SJB 4 (Quiroz 4), SB 6 (Henderson 3, Walling  2, Williams 1). Fouled out--none.

Simi Valley 108, Nogales 54--The Pioneers just out-ran and outshot visiting La Puente Nogales 109-54 in a Southern Section Division I-A second-round playoff game Friday night. Simi Valley (25-3) meets Garey on Tuesday. The third-seeded Pioneers, who lost to Mater Dei in the section semifinals last season, will be a factor again if they continue to play as unselfish and efficient as they did against Nogales (15-13). Simi Valley combined for 34 assists, just two shy of the school record. The Pioneers shot 61 percent from the field (43 for 71), including 13 for 28 from 3-point range. Every player on the roster, including three junior varsity additions, scored at least one point.  Fullove hit 13 of 14 from the floor to score a game-high 30 points. Brett Michel added 26 points, Dustin Villepigue and Ryan Bradshaw 12 each on a night when Simi Valley led 29-5 after the first quarter 50-10 with just over two minutes left in the first half. Dustin Villepigue finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Ryan Bradshaw scored 11 points off the bench as third-seeded Simi Valley improves to 25-2. Nogales, fresh off an upset of Ventura on Wednesday night, ends its season at 15-13.  In rolling up its top point total of the season, and exceeding 100 points for the first time this year, Simi Valley put away Nogales early.  Running the floor, scoring from distance and from short range, Simi Valley nailed 12 of 16 shots in the first quarter and 20 of 30 by halftime. Nogales threw up air ball on three of its first four shots, hit only 1 of 12 in the opening quarter, and watched an 11-5 deficit turn into 29-5 by the close of the first quarter.  The lead was 38-8 before Nogales hit its second basket, with 4:53 left in the second quarter. The advantage grew to 50-10 just before halftime.   Evidence of Simi Valley's hot night carried over to the final buzzer of the game, when Jared Weaver tossed in a twisting 3-pointer from half court for the final margin.   Simi Valley will next play Garey in third-round play on Tuesday.

Garey 71, Burbank 65--Garey High's recent strong showings in the CIF Southern Section playoffs continued Friday when the Vikings beat Burbank 71-65 to advance to the third round in Division I-A.  Justin Horigan led the hosts with 16 points and point guard Taurus Davis added 13 points and eight assists for the Vikings (21-7), who'll visit third-seeded Marmonte League champion Simi Valley (25-3) Tuesday. Simi Valley crushed Nogales 108-54 Friday.  Garey made it to the quarterfinals two seasons ago and played well in a second-round loss to Compton Dominguez last season.  In Friday's contest, the Miramonte League champions cruised to a 37-19 halftime lead over the Bulldogs (18-8). Albert Hill, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored 10 points with 18 rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists.  The final score became closer because Garey missed 19 of its 40 free-throw attempts. After jumping out to a 21-10 first quarter lead, Garey (21-7) held off a second-half comeback by Burbank to secure a second-round victory. The Vikings will play at Simi Valley in the third round Tuesday. Trailing by 18 at halftime, the Bulldogs then opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run, cutting the lead to seven. But Burbank couldn't get any closer than three points. The Vikings only connected on 15-of-26 from the line in the fourth and 21-of-40 for the game, allowing the Bulldogs to catch up. Albert Hill scored 10 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead Garey, while teammate Justin Horigan scored 16 points to lead the Vikings in scoring. BURBANK (65) Jordan 4, Joudi 2, Reed 24, Mazarian 16, Cleveland 13, Sheffield 6. GAREY (71) Boseman 3, Ponder 10, Davis 13, Horigan 16, Flowers 11, Hill 10, DeLeone 8. Burbank 10 9 23 23 -- 65 Garey 21 16 14 18 -- 71 Total fouls: B 31, G 16. Fouled out: Jordan, Chitta, Sheffield, DeLeone (G). Technical fouls: Flowers (G).

Cajon 87, North 72 --Donovan Morris scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead San Bernardino Cajon to a second-round victory in Division I-A. Cajon led by eight at the half and by as much as 19 in the second half. Cajon's defense held Riverside North center Lionel Dixon to six points and kept the Huskies' guards from penetrating for many layups. Blake Walker added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Cowboys (21-6).  Cajon sophomore Andre Payne came off the bench to add 10 points, all in the second half, with eight points coming on four consecutive baskets. It was the first time North -- which earned a first-round bye -- had lost its opening playoff game since 1990. Micah Anderson led North with 28 points, including 17 in the second half.CAJON (87) -- Morris 28, Walker 22, Norman 15, Harris 8, Breeden 4, Payne 10. Marina 73, Saugus 52--Dustin Kaatz scored 29 points to guide the Vikings (24-3) to the victory at home.  Andy Meyer made the correct adjustments at halftime and, it was the assistant coach's game plan, that ultimately derailed Saugus' upset bid as Marina was able to adjust their defense in the second half and deny Tim Tampus the ball. The Centurions (18-10), the third-place finisher out of the Foothill League, successfully threw a full court press at Marina in the first half, and ran the pick and roll to near perfection, which led to some easy back door lay ups as Tim Tampus scored nine points and Saugus, which defeated Buena (75-72) in first round action Wednesday night, trailed just 29-27 at the intermission, and could have forged a halftime tie had Tampus not missed an uncontested lay up attempt with two seconds left in the half.   Still, the Centurions trailed the Sunset League co-champion Vikings by only two at the break, and the longer Saugus was able to hang around, the better chance the Centurions had at scoring a second round upset.  Tthe game was decided in the first 5:31 of the third quarter, when Marina opened the second half with a 13-0 blitz to take control of the game.  Not only did the Vikings (24-3) shut the back door on Saugus, they forced the Centurions into missing their first nine shots and three turnovers in their first 12 possessions of the second half.  By the time Mike Grisanti sank two free throws with 2:29 to go in the quarter, Marina's lead already was at 42-27.  Saugus did manage to trim the deficit to 11 (46-35) heading into the final quarter, but a three-point basket by senior guard Shane Leis to open the period was followed by a DeLuca lay in off a nice feed by Dustin Kaatz, then Beau Brown dropped in a pair of free throws, sending Marina into a 53-35 lead with 6:16 left to play.  The Centurions managed to again draw within 11, this time at 61-50 on Tampus' three-point shot with 2:20 remaining, but Brown answered Tampus with a three-pointer of his own, and Marina was was on its way to the school's first postseason victory in eight years.  The junior guard scored 10 points and five first quarter points, but his three-pointer late in the game was his first basket since hitting a three-point basket at the 2:15 mark of the opening quarter.  Kaatz, who came into the postseason averaging 22.8 points per game, scored 29 to lead all players.   Leis, who came off the bench, added eight points for the Vikings.  Tampus led Saugus with 18 points.  The victory was Marina's first opening round postseason win in three years, and set up a Tuesday matchup against Empire League champion El Dorado (24-3), which was a 61-58 winner Friday over visiting California.

El Dorado 61, California 58--Quinn Hawking's 15 points led the Golden Hawks (24-3) to the victory at home.  Scoring for California were Anchondo 8, Kearney 3, Otijenbruns 17, Shellman 7, villegas 11, Frazier 5, and Arrunda 7.  For El Dorado: Bojorquez 2, Miller 3, Patten 10, Cook 4, Lenhart 5, Wulff 12, Bull 10, Hawking 15. Scoring by quarters:  Califonria 14  7   16   21--58;  El Dorado  15  12  16  18--61.

Silverado 63, Perris 48-- Like a lot of the games played in the Inland Empire, we had a tough time getting the details, and couldn't actually find anything on this game.  If anyone knows what happened, send us the details and we'll post them here.

Rancho Verde 91, Centennial Corona 83 (OT)--J.S. Nash scored 35 points and the Mustangs made eight for 14 free throws in overtime to upset the No. 2-seeded Huskies in a I-A game at Centennial.  Centennial's Jamaal Williams scored 15 and m Eric Soderberg scored 13, but Rancho Verde was able to pull out the overtime win. Centennial finishes the season at 23-3 while Rancho Verde will move on to play Silverado on Tuesday in the next round.  Rancho Verde improved to 18-11. Nash had a chance to win the game outright.  With seven second remaining in regulation, Nash missed a free throw but then got the ball back when Centennial lost it out of bounds after recovering the rebound off the missed free throw.  Nash was immediately fouled again and this time he made both to give the Mustangs a 79-78 lead, but then Bryan Williams was fouled shooting at the buzzer and he missed the first, but made the second to send the game to an additional period.
