Boys Division II-AA Quarterfinal Details &
Bracket Updates--(Feb 27, 2000)

No surprises here:  The quarterfinal round had the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Dominguez, beating Ramona easily, Redondo Union also beat Moorpark, Inglewood, the No. 3 seed beat Santa Maragarita, and Brea Olinda beat Chaparral, setting up the semifinal matches this coming Tuesday, February 29:  Dominguez v. Redondo Union, and Inglewood v. Brea Olinda. The locations haven't been selected yet, but we'd expect the Dominguez v. Redondo game to be somewhere in the South Bay, while the Brea Olinda v. Inglewood game will likely be somewhere near Brea since they're hosting.

Here are the details followed by the updated bracket:

Inglewood 43, Santa Margarita 42--Ed McKinney's three-point basket from the wing with 10 seconds remaining lifted third-seeded Inglewood High to a 43-42 victory over Santa Margarita in a Southern Section Division II-AA boys' basketball quarterfinal playoff game Friday night at Inglewood Morningside.   McKinney finished with nine points--all on three-point shots.  Lenny Collins of Santa Margarita missed a desperation shot near the three-point line at the buzzer.   Santa Margarita, which advanced to a Southern Section Division II-AA boys' basketball quarterfinal playoff game despite returning no starters, watched its season end Friday when reserve Inglewood guard Ed McKinney made a high-arching three-pointer from the wing with 10 seconds to play.  The basket gave the third-seeded Sentinels a 43-42 victory that left the Eagles stunned and saddened at Morningside High in Inglewood.   Santa Margarita guard Chris Pearce brought the ball upcourt on the Eagles' final possession but lost control in the key. Teammate Lenny Collins came up with the loose ball, but his desperation heave near the three-point line fell well short at the buzzer.   The Eagles (23-6) had the game in their clutches in the final minute but couldn't hold on. Guard R.J. Socci, who finished with a game-high 24 points, scored and was fouled on a drive with 1:24 left. He made the free throw to put Santa Margarita ahead, 42-40.   After Inglewood guard Brian Taylor (team-high 13 points) missed two free throws, Pearce had a chance to extend the Eagles' lead but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 39 seconds to play.  Taylor drove into the lane on the Sentinels' next possession but had his shot blocked by Ryan Stacey. Before Santa Margarita guard Brandon Rohe could clear the ball after grabbing the rebound, he was fouled hard by Taylor.   Eagle fans, who comprised about half of the small crowd, cried out for an intentional foul but the officials did not concur.  Rohe, in obvious pain, stayed in the game to attempt his one-and-one opportunity with 21 seconds remaining but didn't make the first shot, giving the ball back to the Sentinels and setting up their game-winning heroics.  Inglewood (25-4) will play Brea Olinda in a semifinal Tuesday.  Santa Margarita scoring:  Socci 24,  Lenny Colins 2,  Ryan Stacey 4,  Rohe 8, Ansezin 2, Tancredi 2.  Inglewood scoring:  Fletcher 7,  Taylor 13,   McKinney 9, Davis 5, Peny 5,  Hankins 4.  Scoring by quarters:   Santa Margarita:  13  10  9 10-42;  Inglewood 15  6   14  8 --43.  Three point goals.  SM 3 (Socci 1, Rohe 2);   Inglewood 8 (Fletcher 1, Taylor 2, McKinney 3, Davis 1, Penny 1).  Santa Margarita 23-6, Inglewood 21-7 (including 5 forfeits).
