Round Game Details--(Feb 20, 2000)
The first round games are all in from Divison II-AA. The second round, "Sweet 16" will be played Tuesday, February 22. Check the bracket updates for details on locations. All game times are 7:30 p.m. Here's what happened on Friday in the first round matchups:
Dominguez 103, San Bernardino 34--The top seeded Dons, also ranked No. 1 in the country, built a 47-9 halftime lead and blasted the visiting Cardinals (10-17) in a first round game. Junior center Tyson Chandler, playing against some of his old San Bernardino junior high school classmates, scored 15 points 8 rebounds and had 8 blocks in only 16 minutes on the floor. Steve Moore added another 15 for the Dons who improved to 27-2. Dominguez will face Norte Vista on Tuesday in a second round matchup which should be a bit more interesting.
Norte Vista 100, El Monte 54--Riverside Norte Vista set a school playoff scoring record and recorded its highest total in a game since 1993 in winning a Division II-AA first-round game. The Braves (16-11) beat El Monte in transition and hit 12 of 19 from three-point range, including 4 of 5 by John Hanley and 4 of 7 by Wendell Horn. Hanley also had nine assists and had the primary defensive responsibilities on El Monte's top scorer, Jackson Dunbar, who hit just 5 of 25 from the field. Norte Vista led by 15 after the first quarter and built a 78-32 lead after three. The Braves will face Compton Dominguez, the top-ranked team in the nation in the USA Today poll, on Tuesday.EL MONTE (54) -- Dunbar 20, J.Ulteras 5, E.Ulteras 4, Carranza 19, Fernandez 4, Hang 2. NORTE VISTA (100) -- Hanley 18, W.Horn 27, K.Mims 10, Askins 9, Boyd 12, J.Horn 7, Torres 5, H.Mims 4, Edwards 2, Grigsby 6. Halftime score -- Norte Vista 50-27. Three-point goals -- Dunbar 2, Hanley 4, W.Horn 4, J.Horn 2, Grigsby 2. Total fouls -- El Monte 14, Norte Vista 16. Fouled out -- none. Technical foul -- Norte Vista bench (scorebook error).
Ramona 94, Cathedral City 82--The Rams, an at-large entry out of the Sunkist League, converted on 10 3-pointers in the first half and were 14-of-24 from the floor in the second half, and eliminated host Cathedral City, 94-82, in a Southern Section Div. IIAA playoff opener. Ramonas duo of point guards, Pat White and Dahlas Downey, did most of the damage. Each had five 3-pointers and led all scorers. White finished with 25 points, Donwey with 24. Cathedral City, though, was at an obvious disadvantage. The Lions, winner of four straight Desert Valley League titles, played without Gerald DeVance. DeVance, the teams playmaker and leading scorer, was at courtside but did not dress for the contest. Lions coach Rob Hanmer and Cathedral City High School principal John Mendoza provided a "no comment" in explaining DeVances playing status. DeVances mother, Charlotte, also chose not to go into details about her sons playing status for the game. As a result, the Lions just werent as sharp as usual. Thomas Shewmake finished with 19 points and five blocks. Paul Heredia finished with eight points. Ochoa took over the ball handling responsibilities for DeVance. In an impressive effort, Ochoa led Cathedral City with 20 points. He hit some key shots, finishing with four 3-pointers on the night. Downey had three of his 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored 13 points, an effort that gave the Rams a slight 22-20 lead going into the second quarter. In the second, Cathedral turned the ball over nine times and were 7-of-18 from the floor. Ramona remained hot, going on an 8-2 run early in the quarter to take a 30-22 lead and then on an 8-0 run to take a 38-24 lead. The Rams went on another spurt, a 7-2 stretch, to take a 45-29 lead. At the half, Cathedral City trailed 52-35. It marks the earliest playoff exit for Cathedral City in five years. The last first round exit for the Lions was in the 1994-95 season. Cathedral City: 20 15 27 20 -- 82 Ramona: 22 30 22 20 -- 94 Cathedral City: David Ochoa 20, Thomas Shewmake 19, Aaron Smith 14, Jeremy Thornburg 8, Paul Heredia 8, Miguel Torres 5, Jeff Lambert 4, Brandon Gray 2, Jayson Green 2. 27 15-19 82. Ramona: Pat White 25, Dahlas Downey 24, Terrence Henry 18, Paul Darkwa 8, Lonnie Adams 8, Anthony Gosserand 4, Walter Carr 4, Jon Brown 2, Houston Downey. Team totals: 24 16-24 94. 3-point goals: R -- 10 (White 5, D. Downey 5), CC -- 6 (Ochoa 4). Total fouls: R -- 16, CC 18.
Bellflower 80, Compton 77 (OT)-- Despite squandering a 9 point lead late in the fourth quarter, the host Buccaneers outlasted the Tarbabes in overtime and won the first round game. Senior forward Eli Curtis had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Rahmaud Richardson added 21 points for Bellflower (15-12). compton (15-8) got a team high 21 points from Jeremiah Thompson in the loss.
Redondo Union 63, Garden Grove 32 --Norman Smith scored 12 points for visiting Garden Grove (7-18), which was outscored, 38-11, in the first half. The host Sea Hawks (22-4) built a 38-11 lead by halftime and cruised into the second round. Ryan Mollins scored a game-high 16 points and Andrew Zahn added 11 points. Redondo will play La Serna, a 72-62 winner over Cypress, in the second round.
La Serna 72, Cypress 62-- The victory before 300 fans
packed into the La Serna gym was the 26th this season for the Lancers, ranked 10th in the
final regular season CIF-SS poll. Nick Christofono led the team, scoring 19 points,
including two 3-pointers and guard Jason Koza had 14, including a pair of 3s in the
victory. Forward Anthony Martinez scored a
quiet 17 points, and Jason Edwards had 16 for the Lancers. Cypress was led by the
impressive outside shooting of Justin Yun, who scored a game-high 20 points for the
Centurions. Yun hit on 6 of 7 3-point attempts. It was difficult for the Lancers to adjust
to Yun's uncanny ability to sink baskets from the outside. Despite Cypress' mediocre 13-13
record, the Centurions were able to keep the game close in the first half. Although
La Serna won the tipoff and scored the game's first basket, Cypress opened up a 7-4 lead
early. The turnaround in that first period came on a beautiful reverse layup by
Christofono in the low post. The shot gave the Lancers an 11-10 lead. But the
quarter ended with Cypress on top, 16-15.
The second period was close. The game was tied 30-30 with 1:20 remaining in the period
after Koza converted two foul shots on a missed 3-pointer. Jason Edward's steal and easy
layup put the Lancers ahead 34-30 at the end of the half. The team never looked back,
scoring 19 points in each of the second, third and fourth quarters. Cypress, on the other
hand, followed its flat second quarter with an even flatter third period. La Serna
opened the third period with a 7-4 run and held the Centurions at bay, largely by sinking
3-pointers. Koza, Christofono and Martinez all sank one in the quarter. Defensively,
the Lancers were able to freeze out Yun, who was scoreless in the third quarter. By the
end of the quarter, it was clear the Lancers were in command as they took a 53-44 lead
into the game's final eight minutes. The fourth opened up with a 6-3 La Serna run,
but then Yun found his shot and hit a 3 to pull his team back within nine at 4:30. Cypress
stayed close over the next two minutes. Yun hit a 2 and a 3 and helped the Centurions
outscore La Serna 5-4 over the next two minutes of the game. But after a La Serna
basket made the score 67-55 with 1:37 remaining, it was clear that the Lancers were not
going to roll over for Cypress. The game, which had been cleanly played up until
that point, ended with three consecutive Cypress fouls. Cypress shot 67% for the game, but
had only 11 rebounds. Justin Yun, who made six three-point baskets, scored 20 points for
Cypress (14-12). La Serna advanced to play Redondo Union.
Moorpark 65, Canyon Anaheim 57--Moorpark 65, Canyon Anaheim 57: For most of the game Todd Tomlinson couldn't buy a basket. When it mattered most, however, Tomlinson couldn't miss. The senior guard made a crucial 3-pointer with 1:09 left in the game to stretch a dwindling lead and converted 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to lift the Musketeers (18-9) past the host Comanches (14-12) in Anaheim. Moorpark, which trailed for much of the first half and the start of the third quarter, used an 18-0 run to turn a 24-20 deficit into a 38-24 lead. Canyon rallied and closed to within four twice, but Tomlinson made sure they would get no closer. Tomlinson made 14 of 18 free throws and Jeff Illions hit 11 of 16 free throws to score 15 points. Moorpark was 28 of 39 from the line.
Pasadena 54, South Torrance 50--South Torrance (12-15) trailed by only four points heading into the fourth quarter, but Pasadena was able to pull away late in the game and advanced to the second round. B.J. Hart led the Spartans with 19 points. Eric Wilson had nine and David Aupiu scored eight. Pasadena was led by Reggie Harmon , who scored 19 points.
Inglewood 79, Westlake 70--Anthony Davis scored 16 points, Earl Felix had 12 and Terrell Stovall added 10 as the host Sentinels (23-4) took a 41-25 halftime lead and held on to win their first-round game. Inglewood will next play West Torrance.
West Torrance 57, Foothill 56--Keith Allen scored a game-high 23 points, including the game-winning free throw with two seconds left, to propel West Torrance over Foothill, 57-56, in a CIF Division II-AA first-round game Friday night. Travis Miller scored 11 points and Logan Steinhauer added 10 for the host Warriors, who erased a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring Foothill, 21-9, in the third quarter. Allen added 11 rebounds. The Warriors (18-9) will play Inglewood in the second round on Tuesday.
Littlerock 52, Buena Park 40-- Littlerock collected the school's first ever playoff win in any team sport with a 52-40 victory over Buena Park Friday night in a CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA first-round game at Littlerock. The Lobos (20-7) will meet Santa Margarita Tuesday in the next round. Gene Myvett put an exclamation point to school's playoff win with just two seconds remaining on the clock, when he took a lob pass from guard Justin Berkeley and jammed it in for the game's final points. It ended an evening that had Myvett score 28 of the teams' 52 points. Buena Park, which made the playoffs thanks to the section's new rule that rewards any team with 10 or more wins with an invitation to post-season play, came into the game with intentions of slowing the tempo of the game. The Coyotes (12-15) did that and actually led 14-13 after the opening quarter. Littlerock was able to start running a little more in the second quarter, taking a 24-20 halftime lead thanks to eight points from Myvett in the quarter. Not surprisingly, it was Myvett who gave Littlerock the lead for good midway through the second quarter. And not surprisingly, it was a dunk that put the Lobos on top, giving Littlerock a 17-16 lead with less than four minutes to play in the half. Sophomore Frank Robinson scored 16 points with a pair of dunks of his own. The 6 foot-3 forward did most of his damage inside the paint against Buena Park's burly 6-foot-4 center Chris Ingram. Buena Park (12-15) bothered Littlerock all game long with a full-court press and was within 38-36 a minute into the fourth quarter. But the Lobos finally found holes in the Buena Park defense, with Robinson and Myvett scoring on transition plays to give Littlerock a 42-36 lead. Deandre Gipson scored 13 for Buena Park (12-15).
Santa Margarita 59, Los Amigos 33--R.J. Socci had 20 points and Chris Pearce had 10 points, nine assists and eight steals for host Santa Margarita (22-5), which advanced to play Littlerock. Lenny Collins had nine points on three three-pointers and Brandon Rohe also scored nine points for the Eagles.
Brea Olinda 80, Torrance 68--Landon Lewis scored 19 points, including five three-pointers, for host Brea Olinda (21-6), which advanced to play Newport Harbor. Marshawn Williams scored a team-high 17 points and Jeffrey Kalama added 16 points in the Tartars' (14-13) first-round loss at Brea Olinda. Brent Arney finished with 10 points for Torrance, which made 12 3-pointers.
Newport Harbor 53, Gahr 46--Chris Martin made three free throws in the last two minutes of the game to give host Newport Harbor (18-8) a six-point lead. Dustin Illingworth had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Sailors. Junior guard Romalice Reed led Gahr with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
Valencia Placentia 69, La Quinta/LQ 66--Clinging onto a slim lead after three quarters of play, La Quinta ran out of gas in the fourth and was eliminated from the Southern Section II-AA playoffs, 69-66, by visiting Valencia. The Blackhawks missed on four free throws late in the game and then had a last second shot bounce off the rim. It was the first playoff appearance in school history for the Blackhawks. La Quinta: 9 22 17 18 -- 66 Valencia: 9 19 17 24 -- 69 La Quinta: Gutierrez 8, Wilson 24, Avon 13, Havens 7, Martinez 3, St. Angelo 2, Burt 5, Pablo 2, Beavers 2. Team totals: 21 7-18 66. Chaparral led by 20 points with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter, but Temescal Canyon slowly closed the lead to nine points with 1:06 in the fourth quarter.
