Division II-AA

Dominguez 90, Norte Vista 54--The Dominguez High Dons cruised to a 90-54 victory over Norte Vista in a CIF Division II-AA second-round playoff game on Tuesday night at Dominguez.  Tyson Chandler suffered a laceration on his right pinky finger when he scraped it against the rim in the third quarter. The junior center was forced to leave the game with the cut bleeding. Dominguez (28-2) was never in danger on the court against Norte Vista (16-11). The nation's No. 1-ranked team by USA Today cruised into the third round against Ramona on Friday night. The Dons' victory on Tuesday followed a 101-35 rout of San Bernardino in the first round. Dominguez has won its last four games by an average of 42.5 points since defeating Oak Hill Academy in the Nike Extravaganza to take over the top spot in the national rankings. Steve Moore had team highs of 19 points and five steals.  The Dons turned up the heat on Norte Vista early, racing to a 21-2 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter. Dominguez had 21 steals and six players combined for 10 dunks. Chandler had two alley-oop dunks in the first two minutes. His follow slam at the end of the first period gave the Dons a 25-7 advantage. Chandler finished with 11 points, 10 in the first quarter, and 11 rebounds. Sherman Gay had 15 points and Brooks contributed 11 points and five assists. Chandler and the rest of the Dominguez starters sat out the fourth quarter. Chandler grimaced noticeably after cutting his finger early in the third quarter. He continued to play for another minute before leaving the game to have the wound bandaged. He scored only one point, a free throw, after returning. Chandler, with the finger wrapped in ice following the game, said the cut may require stitches, but he does not anticipate it keeping him out of action. Dominguez coach Russell Otis substituted liberally. Dominguez was ahead 50-22 at halftime and scored 17 of the first 19 points of the second half for a 67-24 lead. NORTE VISTA (54) -- W.Horn 12, Hanley 16, K.Mims 5, Askins 9, Boyd 10, J.Horn 2. DOMINGUEZ (90) -- McKinney 2, Gay 8, Brooks 13, Chandler 18, Moore 19, Johnson 6, Sanders 4, Jones 11, Looney 8, Boler 1. Halftime score -- Dominguez 50-22. Three-point goals -- W.Horn 2, Hanley 4, Askins 3, Brooks 2, Chandler 2, Moore 2. Total fouls -- Norte Vista 15, Dominguez 13. Fouled out -- none.

Ramona 82, Bellflower 58--Riverside Ramona, full of seniors,  went on a 15-0 run in the first quarter to take control of a Division 2AA second-round game and advance to the quarterfinals, a feat it did not accomplish in the 1990s. Ramona senior guard Dahllas Downey led the Rams with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals. The zone defense of the Rams (18-9) was able to keep the smaller guards of Bellflower (15-13) from penetrating for many easy layups BELLFLOWER (58) -- Muradzikwa 13, Curtis 16, Tillet 0, Allen 7, Sanders 2, Bates 4, Richardson 16. RAMONA (82) -- Gosserand 9, Te.Hanry 12, White 17, D.Downey 18, Darkwa 12, Adams 12, Brown 8, McGinnis 2, Robinson 2. Halftime score -- Ramona 37-22. Three-point goals -- Muradzikwa, Curtis 2, White 3, Downey 3. Total fouls -- Bellflower 12, Ramona 16. Fouled out -- none.

Redondo  67, La Serna 57-- The second half was the key for Redondo, which shot 80%, a remarkable percentage for any level of the sport, and La Serna fell, 67-57.  La Serna came out quickly and impressively, as sharp-shooter Nick Christofono and point guard Jason Koza carried the Lancers through an impressive first 16 minutes.  Christofono had 17 points in the opening half, and he was 4-of-5 from 3-point range as La Serna took a 36-33 edge into the break. Koza had eight points (2-of-4 from 3-point range) and three assists in the first half.  But Redondo, which stayed well within striking distance in the first half, heated up in the third quarter.  Forward Dijon Thompson made all five of his third-quarter field goals as the Seahawks (23-4) pulled ahead for good when guard Ryan Mollins scored inside to give his team a 48-46 lead with 1:46 left in the third.  Redondo stayed hot in the fourth period as Thompson (20 points for the game), Mollins (a team-high 22 points) and highly touted center Andrew Zahn (11 points and eight rebounds) kept La Serna's comeback hopes out of reach with key baskets. Redondo made 57 percent of its shots for the game (30-of-53) after a 14-of-33 performance in the opening half.  La Serna, which made 10 of 26 3-pointers, but only 3-of-12 in the second half, began to miss shots it was making in the first two quarters. La Serna made 7 of 24 shots in the second half (29 percent), after making 13-of-30 in the first half.  Christofono finished with a game-high 24 points, including 15 points on 5-of-12 from 3-point range. Koza wound up with 13 points and six assists; Anthony Martinez had 12 points. Martinez, who was La Serna's starting center, actually outscored Zahn, who is being recruited by a number of NCAA Division I-A programs, including several within the Pac-10 Conference.

Moorpark 65, Pasadena 55--Todd Tomlinson had 30 points to lead unseeded host Moorpark (19-9) past No. 4 seed Pasadena (22-7). Most of Tomlinson's success came in the first half, when he had 14 points, including two 3-pointers.  Moorpark's fast break of Peter Kaufman to Tomlinson gave Moorpark an 8-2 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Pasadena trailed from the opening tip, never coming closer than six points. With the win, Moorpark avenged a 13-point loss to Pasadena two weeks ago.  Pasadena closed to 50-43 early in the fourth quarter, but could draw no closer.  Tomlinson scored seven points and Chris Bucka scored all five of his points in the final five minutes.  Moorpark (19-9) made 20 of 30 free throws to just eight of 13 for the Bulldogs (22-7).  Reggie Harmon scored 16 points, all in the second half, to lead a Pasadena comeback bid. But Thomas had just four points and five rebounds before being ejected for a flagrant foul with 48 seconds left.  From Pasadena's perspective, fouls were trouble, indeed.   Moorpark was 20 of 30 at the line; Pasadena was 8 of 12. Pasadena also lost starting guard Dino Wilburn to a concussion late in the first half. He left -- after being kicked in the head, Tucker said -- having scored just two points.  Wilburn had been averaging 13.9 ppg. Moorpark led by 16 in the third quarter and was up 49-37 after three.   But Pasadena's defense forced turnovers on seven of Moorpark's first eight fourth-quarter possessions, cutting the lead to 50-43 with 5:21 left. That, though, was as close as the visitors would get.  Illions added nine points and six rebounds for Moorpark. Greg Estandia had six points and eight rebounds off the bench.  For Pasadena, Josh Duncan had 13 points and 12 rebounds; Johnny Eubanks scored 12 points.

Inglewood 58, West Torrance 36-- Unbelievably, this seems to be the only game that we couldn't find the details on.  And we're talking nothing.  Nada.  No story anywhere. If anyone has the details, please post them or send them in by e-mail.

Santa Margarita 59, Littlerock 53--Santa Margarita had more energy and more points in a 59-53 victory over Littlerock in the second round of the Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs Tuesday night at Littlerock.  Santa Margarita point guard R.J. Socci scored or assisted on 15 of the Eagles' final 18 points, including an important last-minute play that fended off a late Littlerock rally.   Littlerock (20-8) defeated Buena Park last week, giving the Lobos their first playoff victory since the school began competing at the varsity level in 1991. But Santa Margarita (23-5) was a different Orange County team. Littlerock had trouble penetrating in the half-court offense and scored substantially fewer fast-break points than usual.   The Lobos trailed, 48-31, on a three-point play by Socci with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.  Littlerock rallied, creating turnovers with a full-court press and pulling to within 54-51 on consecutive three-pointers by Jose Zavala.  But with 1:05 left, Socci came up with a drive-and-dish, drawing in the defense as the shot clock wound down and feeding Ryan Stacey for an easy dunk.  Stacey finished with 15 points for Santa Margarita and Brandon Rohe had 17 points. Socci scored 15 points for the Eagles, 13 in the second half.  Frank Robinson scored 12 points for Littlerock, which never led again after holding a 6-5 edge midway through the first quarter.

Brea Olinda 76, Newport Harbor 68--Ryan Wilber, who has signed a letter of intent to play at Humboldt State next season, opened the Wildcats' second-half scoring with a three-pointer and before the third quarter was over, he added a spinning layup, another three-pointer, a baseline jumper and a reverse layup as Brea seized the lead for good.  Wilber finished with 16 of his team-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats to a 76-68 Southern Section Division II-AA victory at Brea. Guards Ryan Moore and Landon Lewis added 19 points apiece for the Wildcats (22-6), who advanced to meet second-seeded Temecula Chaparral in a quarterfinal game Friday in Temecula.  Newport Harbor (18-9), a young team with two sophomores and a junior in its starting lineup, fell behind by 13 points midway through the fourth quarter but put up a fight until the final minute.  Junior guard Aaron Yarnal converted a four-point play with 2:47 left to bring the Sailors within six, at 68-62. Yarnal made a three-pointer on the play and drew a foul on Brea's Shawn Blattenberger.  Yarnal, who finished with 22 points, had a chance to cut the lead to three points on Newport Harbor's next possession, but his three-pointer bounced off the rim. Brea made eight of 11 free throws the rest of the way to clinch the victory.  Sophomore center Tony Melum finished with a game-high 24 points for Newport Harbor and forward Dustin Illingworth had 15.

Chaparral 48, Valencia (Placentia) 39--Temecula Chaparral got its 18th consecutive victory as it defeated host Placentia Valencia in the second round of the Division 2AA playoffs. Dan Larsen and Ryan Cooke led Chaparral (26-3) with 11 points each. Cooke also had eight rebounds and four blocked shots. In the first quarter Chaparral came out and played great defense, taking a 15-5, in the first quarter. Valencia (13-15) made two three-pointers in the final minutes of the game. The Pumas advance to the quarterfinals and will be the home team at an alternate site against Brea Olinda. CHAPARRAL (48) -- Kurtz 4, Larsen 11, Hopkins 7, Brenier 6, Cooke 11, Buller 9. VALENCIA (39) -- Hernandez 7, Briggs 5, Ortega 6, Franklin 0, Dixon 7, Jackson 3, Jones 8, Nguyen 3. Halftime score -- Chaparral 26-11. Three-point goals -- Larsen, Hopkins, Cooke, Hernandez, Jackson, Ortega 2, Nguyen. Total fouls -- Chaparral 11, Valencia 16. Fouled out -- Hernandez. Technical fouls -- none.
