Boys Division V-AA Quarterfinal Details &
Bracket Updates--(Feb 27, 2000)

The Quarterfinal games were played on Friday, February 25, and we were only able to be at one of the four sites, so the only game we personally saw was Campbell Hall v. Chadwick.  Not a pretty game, but still fun.  The game details are below (we still don't have details for the Pacific Hills v. Ribet game, and if someone has the stats, send them in, please).  the semifinals are set for this Tuesday, February 29, and these will be two very good games:  Pacific Hills v. St. Anthony's and Calvary Chapel Downey v. Campbell Hall.  The games will be at alternate sites, which have not yet been determined.  Pacific Hills is the host in the upper bracket and Calvary Chapel is the host of the other game.  So look for one up in LA and the other down near Downey somewhere.  Remember too, the finals is set for Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at LMU.

Here's what happened Friday night, followed by a look at the updated bracket:

Division V-AA
Quarterfinals

Pacific Hills 65, Ribet 50--Amani Daanish scored 17 points and the Bruins (26-4) used an outstanding defensive effort in a V-AA quarterfinal at Brentwood. Neither the Times nor the Daily News provided a box score of the game, so we don't really know what happened.

St. Anthony 82, Bell-Jeff 67--The Saints extended the season for at least one more contest with an 82-65 victory over visiting Bell-Jeff in the CIF Southern Section V-AA quarterfinals Friday night. Jared Lloyd scored 34 points and Pearson
Smith had a triple-double for the victorious Saints (20-8) in a quarterfinal game at St. Anthony.  Smith had 14 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists, and Arlondo Holder had 24 points and 10 rebounds.  Mike Yildiz and Carlos Arroyo each scored 19 points for Bell-Jeff (23-7), which used an 8-0 run to pull to within 54-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Coach Joe Luyben's team relied on the senior trio of Jared Lloyd, Pearson Smith and Arlando Holder to direct the victory. The three veterans combined for 73 points and 25 rebounds. Lloyd spent the day nursing a nagging sinus headache and the evening shooting the Saints into Tuesday's semifinals against top-seed Pacific Hills. Early on, though, it looked like he might shoot the Saints out of the postseason after missing his first six shots. But he ultimately finished with a game high 33 points, including five three pointers. His first basket a 3-pointer from the right corner with two seconds left in the first period gave the Saints an 11-10 lead, and they never relinquished the advantage. The Saints (20-8) led, 36-27, at halftime and built the advantage to 17 points late in the third period after Lloyd's 3-pointer made the score, 54-37, with 1:06 remaining. But Bell-Jeff center Carlos Arroyo (19 points, 14 rebounds) hit a follow shot to begin a 7-0 run in the final 1:06 of the period and Casey Markovic hit a layup to open the final quarter. The Guards (22-7) never got closer than seven points, largely because they couldn't stop Holder, who had 13 fourth-quarter points despite playing the final 7:45 with four fouls. Holder finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Many of Holder's points came after Smith (13 points, 13 rebounds) broke down the pressure defense. Lloyd also had 13 fourth-quarter points, but his performance on defense was equally important. He guarded Mike Yildiz most of the night and the Guards' leading scorer missed 10 of 17 shots. St. Anthony's Jay Arizabal had eight points and six rebounds to make up for the foul trouble encountered by Brian Robinson, who fouled out with 5:42 left in the third period.

Calvary Chapel Downey 45, Santa Clara 40--Timothy Drisdom scored 10 points as the third-seeded Grizzlies (24-5) advanced to the semifinals for the first time with a victory at Santa Clara.  Santa Clara, which won the 1999 State Division V title in the final game of coach Lou Cvijanovich's 41-year career, lost a lead in final minute and fell to Downey Calvary Chapel, 45-40, in a Southern Section Division V-AA quarterfinal at Santa Clara.  A three-point basket by senior guard Jason Angell with 1:12 to play gave the Saints a 40-39 lead, but Calvary Chapel scored the final six points.  It was the 18th consecutive victory for Calvary Chapel (24-5), which advanced to the semifinals for the first time in school history.  Santa Clara (17-7) trailed most of the game but Jonathan James scored on a drive with 47 seconds remaining to give the Grizzlies the lead for good at 41-40.  Santa Clara failed to score in its two final possessions.  Angell, who scored a game-high 16 points, shot an air ball after Calvary Chapel took the lead. Tim Drisdom was fouled after getting the rebound and made two free throws to give the Grizzlies a 43-40 lead with 12 seconds left.   Santa Clara had a chance to tie the score after a timeout, but Angell missed a three-pointer with four seconds left.  Jaime Banelos of Calvary Chapel was fouled after grabbing a rebound and made two free throws with two seconds left for the final margin.  The Saints shot a dismal 16 for 51 from the field.  Angell was six for 23, including two for nine from three-point range.  Angell's shooting troubles may have gotten the best of him after he missed an uncontested layup with 3:00 left and Santa Clara trailing, 39-35.  But he came back to hit the three-pointer that gave the Saints a short-lived lead.  Senior guard Chris Post scored 14 points for Santa Clara but senior center Earl Hall was held to four points.  James and Drisdom each scored nine points for No. 3-seeded Calvary Chapel, which plays Campbell Hall in the semifinals at a site to be determined. Santa Clara shot 25% (seven of 28) in the first half, but only trailed, 18-15, at intermission thanks to a tenacious defensive effort that limited Calvary Chapel to eight baskets in 24 attempts. against Downey Calvary Chapel. Calvary Chapel scoring:  Tim Drisdom 9, J. James 9, Banuelos 8, Pilon 8, Henderson 4, C. Drisdom 3, Robinson 2, M. James 2.  Santa Clara scoring:  Angell 16, Post 14, Hall 4, Soria 4, Davis 2.  Scoring by quarters: Clavary Chapel Downey:  9 10   15  12--45;  Santa Clara 7  8  15  10--40.

Campbell Hall 63, Chadwick 48--Jesse Foster had 20 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots as Campbell Hall High beat Chadwick, 63-48, in a Southern Section Division V-AA quarterfinal game Friday at Campbell Hall.  Hassan Bassiri added 14 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, for the Vikings.  Campbell Hall (22-8) capitalized on two 12-2 runs in the first and third quarters to open 10-point leads.  Freshmen Derek Williams and Robert Locke combined for 19 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals for Campbell Hall.  For Chadwick, two players stood out:  Mike Reich (pronounced "Rich") scored 27, and he had the first 20 points of the game for the Dolphins.  Peter McCaslin took a while to get going but he finished with 14 in the game.  While both teams had good inside play, particularly Chadwick's ability to spread the court and get Reich the ball, Campbell Hall ultimately denied the Dolphins from the perimeter, and they only had one perimeter basket the whole game, which was from Reich with a nice step back for three.    Campbell Hall advances to the semifinals next Tuesday at a location to be determined against Calvary Chapel Downey, which will provide the Vikings with their biggest test of the year so far.  Campbell Hall was ranked at the end of the regular season as the No. 2 team in the CIF-SS poll, while Calvary Chapel was ranked No. 3.   Campbell Hall:  Foster 20 and 9 rebounds, 7 blocks, Williams 10 and 8 rebounds, Bassiri 14, Klippsten 5, Drobnick 5, Locke 9.  Chadwick:  McCaslin 14, Reich 27, Miller 2, Barrett 3, Maio 2.   Chadwick--15  11  10   12--48;  Campbell Hall 18  10  16  19--63.
