The Rest Of Tonight's
First Round Games--(Feb. 16, 2000)
In addition to the Division I-A and I-AA games tonight, Division III-AA and V-AA and V-A are in action tonight.
Divisions II-AA, II-A, IV-AA and IV-A are playing their first round on Friday, when everyone else plays the second round, as well as the first round in City Section.
In Division III-AA, Bishop Montgomery and San Dimas get byes, as does Corona Del Mar, but Harvard-Westlake, the No. 4 seed in the division gets to play Ganesha. Other games of interest will be St. Francis @ Pomona, Granite Hills, a freelance team which will play at Banning, Morningside @ Santa Ynez (if you're up in the SLO area), Estancia at Verbum Dei, and Wrokman at Notre Dame. Chaminade will also take on South Pasadena and Azusa will play Gabrielino. Diamond Ranch and Gladston will play as well, and Northview will be at Cabrillo Lompoc also for the fans up in the Santa Maria/Santa Ynez area.
In Division V-AA, there are some really easy first round games for some teams, and starting with the top of the bracket, and working down, the ones that will be of most interest will be Pacific Hills which should have an easy time with Fairmont, Yeshiva, which should be able to handle Shalhevet, Bishop Diego with Jaime Sanchez pouring in the points plays at Kilpatrick. Thacher and Ribet get byes, while Desert Christian Bermuda Dunes will play Trona and the winner will play Ribet, a team that has been doing very well and won the Heritage League. Lone Pine will play at La Sierra and the winner gets Ontario Christian. The game we'll be going to will be (big surprise. . . ) Montclair Prep, ranked No. 8 at St. Margaret's and the winner gets No. 6 Buckley on Friday at Buckley. Cate will be the first victim for St. Anthony's ranked No. 5 in the division in the final poll. Desert Christian Lancaster has a bye, and will play the winner of that game. Masada, which won the Freedom League gets a bye, and they'll play either Windward or Flintridge Prep, and that's a tossup for our money, although Brandon Cane of Windward is probably a better ball handler than any of the FP guards. Faith Baptist plays AGBU and we have no idea about AGBU, never seen them. Bell-Jeff didn't get a first round bye, so they'll play Brethren Christian, which entered as an at-large team. Calvary Chapel Downey, the No. 2 seed, gets a bye and will play either San Gabriel Academy or Whitewater (does it matter which?) on Friday as Tim Drisdom's next victim. Woodcrest Christian plays Boron, and we haven't got a clue, but the winner plays Valley Christian Santa Maria on Friday at Santa Maria. Bloomington Christian, which won the Victory League, gets a bye, and they'll play the winner of Capo Valley v. Western Christian. Our money is on Lokar's team in this one. Grace Brethren plays Dunn at GB, and the winner gets last year's state Champ, No. 7 Santa Clara on Friday. Chadwick also has a bye, and they'll be up in Edwards AFB scouting Desert playing Twin Pines. La Verne Lutheran plays Calvary Chapel Murrieta for the right to play Valley Torah, while Sherman Indian got a by too and will play the winner of Apple Valley Christian and Bethel Christian Riverside. Villanova Prep gets a reprieve by not having to play Montclair tonight; instead they'll play Pilibos from Glendale and finally, Campbell Hall will make duck soup out of Pasadena Poly, a team that's gone from first to last in less than 12 months. But they're rebuilding. . . .
In Division V-A, we don't really know half of these teams, and both Price and Heritage Christian have byes. Antelop Valley Christian also has a bye, as does Southwestern. The rest of the teams in this division probably don't ultimately have a chance to reach the finals, but then you never know.
See you somewhere.
