SoCal CIF State Regional 1st Round
Boys' Game Details--(Mar. 8,  2000)

We had a couple of scores reversed last night when we posted them up, and at least one winner San Diego Lincoln, which actually defeated Serra, was listed as having lost, and for that we apologize, and our condolences to Gardena Serra, which ended it's up and down season last night at LA Southwest College with the loss. . . hey, you mean the CIF doesn't accept our scores as official?   We've spent a lot of the day collecting the details from all of the games played yesterday, boys, girls, NorCal and SoCal, and we've found something for most every game.  Here are the details from the SoCal CIF State Regionals, first round, for the boys' games.   Remember, D-I is being played tonight, so we won't have anything on them, except raw scores, until tomorrow.

Division II

Compton Dominguez 81, Escondido Orange Glen 47--Tyson Chandler scored 17 points and had five rebounds and five blocks in three quarters of action against a team with no player over 6-feet-5.  Isaiah Orange scored 22 points for visiting Orange Glen.   Dominguez High of Compton converted 22 of 27 field-goal tries in the second and third quarters to run away from Orange Glen, 81-47, in the opening round of the Division II Southern California Regionals on Tuesday.  Led by 7-foot junior center Tyson Chandler's 17 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots, the Dons (32-2) advanced to Thursday's second round at home against San Diego Serra which knocked off Brea Olinda.   Dominguez, the seven-time Division II champion in the Southern Section, made a 9-0 run in the first quarter to take control and never relinquished it. For good measure, the Dons added a 9-2 run in the second quarter to push the lead to 38-20 by halftime.   The Dons shot 60.7 percent from the field in the game, making 37 of 61 tries while the Patriots (14-16) made 19 of 67 for 28.4 percent. In addition to his 22 points, Isaiah Orange also grabbed eight rebounds. Ian McKeithan added nine points for the Patriots.   Orange Glen took care of the ball pretty well, committing just 15 turnovers against the Dons, who made 18.  In addition to Chandler, the Dons got 11 points from Keith Brooks.  In all, 11 Dominguez players scored. The Patriots made the long journey north, packed themselves into a 1-3-1 zone and hoped for the best. Dominguez (32-2) responded by lobbing passes right over the defense, and allowing Chandler to jam them home. By the time he left, Dominguez had built a 66-31 lead, and Coach Russell Otis was able to clear his bench and let his starters rest up for Thursday night's home game against San Diego Serra, a 66-51 winner over Brea-Olinda. Isaiah Orange had a game-high 22 points for Orange Glen, but eight of those came in a foot-loose fourth quarter, with Dominguez starters watching from the bench. Chandler had 11 points and five blocks by halftime, helping Dominguez leave the floor with a 38-20 lead. The Dons blew it open by outscoring Orange Glen, 28-11, in the third quarter.

San Diego Serra 66, Brea Olinda 51--Six-foot-eight senior James Profit scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half and his younger brother Julius scored 15 of his 17 points after halftime to highlight the surge for Serra (26-4), which advanced to play top-seeded Compton Dominguez.  Serra's full-court press and half-court trapping defense frustrated visiting Brea Olinda (26-10) throughout the game, helping force 20 Wildcat turnovers. Brea Olinda never got on track in its Southern Regional Division II opening-round game Tuesday and lost to host Serra of San Diego, 66-51. Part of the problem for the Wildcats (24-8) was Serrra's pressure defense. The play of the Profit brothers, James and Julius, certainly helped Serra, even though James scored only four first-half points, but turned it up in the second half to finish with 21. Julius Profit added 17. Brea Olinda was led by Ryan Wilber with 23 points and Ryan Moore added 13. Serra (24-4) advances to Thursday's Southern Regional semifinal and will play top-seeded Dominguez of Compton, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today. It was the Dons who ended Brea Olinda's Southern Section title hopes last Saturday. SERRA 66, BREA OLINDA 51  Brea Olinda 7 14 15 15 -- 51 Serra 13 14 18 21 -- 66 Brea Olinda (21-5) -- Ulieny 3, Lewis 9, Moore 13, Wilber 23, Reimer 3. Serra (24-4) -- Evans 7, Ju.Profit 17, Gohsler 3, Ja.Profit 21, Williams 6, Fendrich 12. Three-point goals -- Evans, Ja.Profit, Gohsler, Fendrich, Lewis.

Artesia 86, Bakersfield East 50--Jack Martinez scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds and Amaury Fernandez had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers (30-2) at home. It is easy for Artesia High to start looking ahead toward a showdown with Dominguez in the Southern Regional Division II boys basketball final on Saturday.  Particularly after the Pioneers' 86-50 victory over East Bakersfield in a quarterfinal Tuesday night at Artesia. For Artesia coach Wayne Merino, it meant threatening to put the water boy in the game when his team began straying away from its offense with one-on-one moves in the second quarter. In the second half, it meant emptying his bench with three minutes left in the third quarter and Artesia (30-2) ahead, 61-29.   Second-seeded Artesia will play host to Bakersfield Foothill, a 61-54 winner over Ocean View, in a Thursday semifinal at a site to be determined. Another victory would advance the Pioneers to their third consecutive regional championship, most likely against top-seeded Dominguez. It would be the third meeting of the season with the Dons, the No. 1 team in the nation, which has handed the Pioneers (No. 6 nationally) their only two losses of the season. East (16-15), the Central Section runner-up, was hardly any comparison. About the only thing that slowed Artesia was delays from television timeouts from a Fox Sports Net 2 broadcast. Amaury Fernandez did a good job on Tuesday to help the Pioneers jump to a 18-2 lead in the first five minutes and 31-7 less than a minute into the second quarter. The 6-9 junior scored 13 of his 17 points in the first quarter, including three dunks. Hazel had 10 of Artesia's 22 steals, eight coming in the first half. Jack Martinez scored 17 and Jon Stefansson and Franklin Matos scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tony Roberts had 11 rebounds off the bench for the Pioneers. Artesia led, 46-23, at halftime, and took its biggest lead, 71-33, early in the fourth quarter. East (16-15) Thompson 2, Rhodes 3, Bryant 8, Johnson 15, Pineda 10, Avalos 6, Boone 6. Totals: 19 6-11 50. Artesia (30-2) Thornton 6, Matos 10, Fernandez 18, Reyes 4, Hazel 5, Roberts 8, Stefansson 10, Heron 8, Martinez 17. Totals: 38 6-8 86. Technical fouls— None.

Bakersfield Foothill 61, Ocean View 54-- Ocean View's fourth-quarter rally fell short Tuesday as host Foothill of Bakersfield hung on for a 61-54 victory in a CIF Southern Regional Division II quarterfinal basketball game. The Seahawks' Marques Crane, who scored a game-high 20 points, hit a three-pointer with less than a minute to go in the game to bring Ocean View to a 54-51 deficit. A layup by Foothill's Darryl Carter with 35 seconds left forced Ocean View to foul to get the ball. Foothill connected on five of six free throws during that stretch to clinch the victory.Ocean View (29-4) Crane 20, Westbrook 12, Bell 10, Beeler 5, Clarke 3, Chow 3, Roth 1. Totals 17 13-17 54. Division III

Bishop Montgomery 63, San Diego St. Augustine 40--Bishop Montgomery's pressure defense helped the top-seeded Knights take a 32-15 halftime lead en route to an easy victory at Bishop Montgomery.  Errick Craven scored 22 points, Brian Pruitt had 12 and Derrick Craven scored 10 points for Bishop Montgomery (25-5). The top-seeded Knights stifled the Saints (18-11) the San Diego Section runner-up with their swarming defense to advance to the second round. They will host Centennial of Compton in a rematch of the  Southern Section championship game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Montgomery beat Centennial, 59-43, to win the title. The Knights used the same formula to defeat Centennial as they did to dispose of the Saints: defense. Bishop Montgomery forced 29 turnovers and held St. Augustine scoreless for minutes at a time. The Knights' victory can be pinpointed to the second quarter when they turned a 14-8 first-quarter lead into a 32-15 halftime advantage. Bishop Montgomery limited the Saints to four field-goal attempts, one of which they converted, and forced nine turnovers. The Saints' only basket was at the 3:43 mark. While the defense clamped down in the second quarter, the Knights' offense finally opened up. They started the quarter on a quick 9-2 run thanks to five straight points by Errick Craven. Kenny D'Oyen finished the outburst with a 3-pointer at the end of the half. Errick Craven led the way, scoring his game-high 22 points in clusters. At one point in the third quarter, he scored seven straight on a coast-to-coast layup, one of his three 3-pointers and a slam dunk. Brian Pruitt added 12 points and six steals, and Derrick Craven finished with 10 points. St. Augustine 8 7 10 15 -- 40 Bishop Montgomery 14 18 14 17 -- 63  St. Augustine (18-12) -- North 17, Williams 3, Osmundson 9, Cochran 2, Marrentez 2, Mauger 4, Moorcroft 2, Lizarraga 1. Torrance Bishop Montgomery (25-5) -- D.Craven 10, Pruit 12, Fynaart 1, Dodd 4, D-Oyen 3, Caldwell 2, Peace 2, E.Craven 22, Washington 6, Lep 1. Three-point goals -- North, Osmundson, E.Craven 3, D.Craven, D-Oyen.

Compton Centennial 83, Selma 39--Centennial went on a 16-2 run to end the first half and kept the pressure on Selma by scoring the first 12 points of the second half on the way to an 83-39 Division 3 victory in Compton.  The height of the Apaches, as well as their half-court trap, caused problems for Selma and took the Bears out of their offense.  Selma capped a school-record 23-5 season by making the state playoffs for the first time in school history.  Chris Tabarez led the Bears with 19 points Centennial's Ellis Myles led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jamaal Barnes had 14 points as the Apaches (23-5) won their first-round game at home. Eric Alvarez finished with 13 points and eight assists for Centennial, which led, 48-27, at halftime. The Apaches will play Bishop Montgomery in a rematch of the CIF Division III-AA title game Thursday night.

Morningside 78, Washington Union 66 --Behind a clutch stretch drive by Tracey Cathey,  Morningside turned back the third-seeded Panthers 78-66 in a Southern Regional Division 3 opener.  Cathey, a 6-foot 1-inch senior guard, scored 15 of his 17 points, including 8 for 8 free throws in the final 2 minutes.  Cathey was unimpressive early, but took over with the Panthers closing in during the fourth quarter.   With Kansas coach Roy Williams sitting courtside, Jayhawks signee DeShawn Stevenson slammed home two points with 4 minutes 16 seconds left to pull Washington to 54-51. But Cathey made a 3-pointer to pad the lead.  Stevenson, who scored 13 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, answered with a shot from the right corner, and Keith Sconiers was 1 for 2 on free throws as the Panthers cut it to 57-54. That, however, was as close as they would get.  Dale Graham's two free throws again brought Washington within four, 67-63, with 58.1 seconds left, but Cathey was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final 54.4 seconds.  Khali Young was in control early. Behind the junior forward, who scored eight of his 16 points in the first 3:11, Morningside made eight of its first 10 shots.  DeShawn Anderson scored 18 points. The two DeShawns did all of Washington's scoring in the first quarter and a half. Stevenson was 8 for 8 from the free-throw line and scored 12 points in the first quarter, and Anderson added eight points to keep the Panthers within one point.  Morningside, substituting nine players freely, repeatedly made runs, but Washington worked its way back. The Monarchs, led by Dwayne Trotter's 11 third-quarter points, went up 51-39 with 1:11 left in the quarter, but Stevenson followed a 3-pointer with a three-point play on a slam to fuel an 8-0 Panthers run. Normally not a great free-throw shooting team, Morningside made 23 of 30, including 12 of 14 in the fourth quarter.  Trotter finished with 20 points.  Besides the DeShawns, nobody scored more than four points for Washington, which struggled to meet  lofty expectations and changed coaches with one game left in the regular season.

Corona del Mar 49, University of San Diego 46--Kevin Hansen made an 18-foot baseline jumper with 51 seconds left to give Corona del Mar a three-point lead and University was unable to convert on its final attempts.  Hansen scored 15 points, Alex Hanson had 13 and Joel Templeton added 12 points and 10 rebounds for visiting Corona del Mar (23-7). It was more than a loss in the state basketball playoffs. It was the end of an era for the Walton Gang at University of San Diego High School.  Chris Walton -- the youngest of Bill Walton's four sons -- and Chris' cousin, Kam, played their final game in a USDHS uniform.  As sophomores, Chris and Kam helped Uni win the 1998 Division III state title on a team led by Chris' brother, Luke. Nate Walton also played at USDHS on the Dons' 1996 team that was a regional finalist.  USDHS struggled with its shots against Corona del Mar's zone defense while playing in unfamiliar surroundings -- its own gym.  The Dons usually play their regional playoff games across the street at the USD Sports Center, but the gym wasn't available. USDHS attempted to play at Francis Parker, but Parker discovered it had double-booked its gym.  That forced Uni to play in its 750-seat gym, considered too small for state playoff games.  In the fourth quarter, Corona del Mar outscored USDHS 15-5 to wipe out the Dons' 41-34 third-quarter lead.  Chris Walton was limited to six points as USDHS didn't have a player in double figures. Guard Chris Ganan scored nine, forward Nate Staggs eight and guard Justin Green added eight off the bench. Corona Del Mar 11 7 16 15 -- 49 USDHS 10 17 14 5 -- 46  Corona Del Mar (23-8) -- A. Hanson 13, Morris 4, K. Hanson 17 Heitbrink 3, Templeton 10, Snell 2 USDHS (24-7) -- Ganan 9, C.Walton 6, Quentin 4, K. Walton 2, Staggs 8, Green 8, Stockalper 7. Three-point goals -- Ganan 3, A.Hanson 2, K.Hanson 2, Stockalper, Heitbrink

Division IV

St. Bernard 76, Corcoran 66--Brandon Williams scored 21 points and Brandon Nunnely had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings (24-7) to victory at Corcoran.   Corcoran led, 30-24, with about four minutes left in the first half. But St. Bernard went on a 20-4 run in the last four minutes of the second quarter.  St. Bernard High scored 16 points in the final two minutes of the first half to regain the lead and went on to defeat Corcoran 76-66 in a Division 4 game. Corcoran committed six consecutive turnovers in the run that gave St. Bernard a 44-34 lead at intermission.   Todd Garcia had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead Corcoran. Marty Escobedo scored 17 points for Corcoran, which had nine 3-pointers.  Three St. Bernard players scored in double figures, led by Brandon Williams, Brandon Nunally, and Bernard McCumby with 14 points.

Crossroads 73, Lindsay 50--Jordan Rush scored 10 of his 23 points in the first quarter to lead Crossroads (23-9) at home.  Felipe Williams added 13 and Isaiah Fox had 10 points for the Roadrunners.  Using a height advantage, the 6-foot 5-inch Jordan Rush and 6-10 Isaah Fox led the way for Crossroads to take control of the game. With a series of spectacular dunks, Rush scored 23 points to pace Crossroads and Fox, scoring mostly on offensive rebounds, finished well inside.   Crossroads took to a 21-13 lead. It was 37-21 at halftime, but the Cardinals cut the lead to eight points in the third quarter before Crossroads regained control and pulled away.  Twelve Lindsay players scored, led by Sergio Silva with 10 points.

Orange Lutheran 63, San Diego Horizon 61--Orange Lutheran upset top-seeded San Diego Horizon, 63-61, in the first round of the Southern California Regional boys' basketball tournament Tuesday night at Horizon.  Orange Lutheran (25-5), which gave up an average of four to six inches per position, packed its defense in the key and countered the Panthers' above-the-rim offense with a patient passing game and some clutch three-point shooting.  Orange Lutheran led, 63-56, on Mike Bristol's layup with 38 seconds left, but the Lancers suddenly went cold from the free-throw line and left Horizon an opening.  After Horizon pulled to within five points with 26 seconds left, Jason Whieldon missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. Robert Ortiz then went to the free-throw line for the Panthers and made the first and missed the second. But John Browner put back the rebound, cutting the lead to 63-61.  Whieldon went back to the line and missed two free throws with 12 seconds remaining. Horizon got the rebound and headed upcourt, but Whieldon met Jarrha Bolden at midcourt and forced a jump ball, giving possession to Orange Lutheran with eight seconds left.  The Panthers (21-7) sent Whieldon back to the line two seconds later and he missed his seventh and eighth consecutive free throws, but the Lancers kept the rebound alive and Horizon was not able to get off a shot. Poor free-throw shooting cost Horizon even more. The Panthers made only two of 11 and did not have anybody capable of scoring from the perimeter.  Horizon made only one of five three-pointers and converted only one other jump shot from outside the key.  On the other end of the court, Orange Lutheran made eight of 20 three-point attempts, including several in clutch situations.  Whieldon scored 16 points to lead the Lancers, Patrick Salyer had 14 points and eight blocks and Mike Bristol scored 10.   Fred Hooks scored 18 points to lead Horizon. ORANGE LUTHERAN 63, HORIZON 61 Orange Lutheran 15 16 17 15 -- 63 Horizon 14 14 13 20 -- 61   Orange Lutheran (25-5) -- Whieldon 16, Nault 4, Smith 6, Bristol 9, Salyer 14, Gavin 2, Howard 12. Horizon (22-8) -- Bolden 9, Henderson 5, Ortiz 3, Browner 4, Hooks 18, Brown 10, Coleman 10, Johnson 2. Three-point goals -- Howard 4, Whieldon 2, Henderson, Bristol, Salyer.

Division V

Price 70, Reedley Immanuel 39--Chris Alexander and Jermaine Jamerson each scored 15 points and Mychal Lynch added 14 for the top-seeded Knights (30-1) in the victory at Inglewood.  The host knights were led by four players who scored in double figures.   Jermaine Jamison had all 16 of his points in the first half as Price jumped   to a 45-13 halftime lead. Chris Alexander added 15 points for the Knights while Mychal Lynch and Andre Jones each had 12 and 11 points respectively for  price (30-1). The Eagles (17-12) were led by Bret Dewey with 18 points and Aaron Warkentin chipped in with 11. Immanuel, the Central Section runner-up could  not overcome size, speed and atleticism problems all night. However, they actually outscored price 26-24 in the second half as the Knights  uncharacteristically missed from the outside and committed several turnovers. Price moves on to the second round on Thursday at Manual Arts HS agaisnt Calvary Chapel Downey.

Calvary Chapel Downey 68, Layton 58--Tim Drisdom scored 21 points and Jonathan James had 20 to lead the Grizzlies to victory at Layton.  Calvary Chapel, making 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, turned back Laton 73-63 in a Division V Southern Regional boys' basketball playoff opener at Riverdale on Tuesday.  A full-court press by Calvery Chapel stifled the Laton offense in the third quarter, but the Mustangs came back to tie the score early in the fourth quarter to tie.  Calvary Chapel again pulled away, this time from the free-throw line, to end a 23-4 season by the Central Section champion Mustangs.  Two Laton starters fouled out.  Aaron Kirchert scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Timothy Drisdom also had 13 rebounds in addition to his 21 points.

El Cajon Christian 78, St. Anthony's 66-- St. Anthony High senior Jared Lloyd clanked a concession dunk off the rim in the final seconds of Tuesday's Southern California Regional Division V first-round game against visiting El Cajon Christian, as the Saints finally ran out of miracles in a disappointing 78-66 loss at St. Anthony's.  The Saints committed 19 turnovers in the game, many of them unforced. Initially, the Saints started out well enough, breaking out to a 6-2 lead.   But by the half, they were forced to play catch up, and at one point in the second quarter trailed by 13 points.  That's when Pearson Smith and Jared Lloyd put themselves back to work and St. Anthony's back into the game and by the break, St. Anthony's trailed by just 6, 38-32.  The Patriots (27-4) played much of the first half without leading scorer Tim Brown, who was whistled for his third foul with 1:04 left in the first period. The foul trouble didn't turn out to be a problem for the Patriots, largely thanks to the fact that Chris Carter had trouble missing any of his shots and he had 19 points in the first half. With his team doing a great job of setting picks, the 5-foot-10 junior guard shook free for a trio of 3-pointers and three more jumpers from just inside the arc in the first half. Carter's 17-foot jumper with 2:27 left gave the Patriots a 38-25 lead. But the Saints surged back with two free throws by Pearson Smith, a 3-pointer by Alan Cerino and a layup by Arlando Holder to end the half on a 7-0 run. Brown came back into the game to begin the second half and contributed nine points to help Christian carry a 54-46 lead into the fourth period. Five of Brown's third-period points came immediately following Brian Robinson's follow shot that trimmed the St. Anthony deficit to 42-41 with 5:03 left in the quarter. Lloyd had nine of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Saints tried vainly to come from behind. They crawled within 55-50 on a Holder basket with 5:50 remaining, but Christian ripped off the next 10 points, capped by a Carter 3-pointer. Smith, who sparked the Saints to the championship game win over Downey Calvary Chapel last week, finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.   El Cajon Christian will now advance to the second round semifinals and will play La Jolla Country Day, which upset them last week in the San Diego Section finals.   Christian 16 22 16 24 -- 78 St. Anthony 14 18 14 20 -- 66  Christian (26-5) -- B.Wohlfeil 10, Carter 22, Brown 10, Jackson 8, Freiberg 12, Wai 2, Vanderwerff 9, J.Wohlfeil 5. Long Beach St. Anthony (22-9) -- Robinson 8, Lloyd 20, Terino 6, Smith 19, Brown 3, Holder 6, Serrato 2, Arizabol 2. Three-point goals -- Carter 4, Vanderwerff 2, B.Wohlfeil, Lloyd 3, Smith.

La Jolla Country Day 71, Heritage Christian 56----Chris Robinson scored 38 points to lead La Jolla Country Day at home.  Chris Robinson and Rashawn Allen combined for 62 points Tuesday to lead La Jolla Country Day's boys basketball team to a 71-56 victory against visiting Heritage Christian in the CIF Division V Southern California Regionals. Allen had 24 points, including six three-pointers. La Jolla Country Day improved to 28-4. Heritage Christian finishes 24-6. Jason Grier scored 26 points to lead Heritage Christian. La Jolla advances to play El Cajon Christian, a 78-66 victory against St. Anthony.
