Brea just was never in this game, and from the first quarter, it was all Dons, as they jumped out to an 18-4 lead, winning their sixth consecutive section title. How impressive were the Dons on Saturday? Consider this: Tyson Chandler blocked Brea's first shot attempt, a 22 footer from Ryan Wilber. Brea made only one field goal in the first quarter, Chase Ulicny's basket that gave Brea it's closest lead of the game, 5-2 in the first quarter. And it got worse from there. Brea scored only two baskets in the second quarter, shot three for 21 in the first half, and finished the first quarter with just 4 points, and 8 in the second, and they trailed 31-12 at the half. Brea's four leading shooters, including Ryan Wilber, Landon Lewis and Ryan Moore, made only 4 of 29, and hit only 1 of 15 from behind the arc. Ten of Brea's attempts were blocked and they lost 10 possessions to Dominguez steals. And that was just the first half, and in the second half it was not going to get any better. Overall in the game,Brea had 23 turnovers, 10 of them to steals. Brea tried to double team Tyson Chandler, and also went to a packed in zone, but Dominguez had no trouble with either approach, shooting over and around the Wildcats.
Brea had one little run in the third quarter, as they scored 10 consecutive points to pull to within 36-24, but that was a close as it got, as Dominguez went on its own 15-0 run in the third. Brea did not score again until Wilber, who had a team-high 10 points, made two free throws to make the score 59-26 with 5:54 left in the game. Extending that 15-0 run, Dominguez scored another 10 straight points in the fourth quarter. Chandler took only five shots and finished with 13 points, seven below his average, but picked up 6 huge blocks. Tyson was double-or triple teamed most of the time, but with a team as deep as Dominguez, that's not necessarily the best move, because it just freed up Steve Moor who led all scorers with 19 points, shoting a perfect 5 for 5 from three point range, going 4 for 6 from the line and picking up 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal along the way in only 14 minutes of play. Keith Brooks was also impressive, but not overwhelming, as he scored 9 points and picked up 8 rebounds and two blocks. Sherman Gay hd only 6 points, shooting 1 for 8 form the field and missing his only three point attempt, but he was nearly perfect from the line, on 4 for 5 shooting. In al, just about everyone on the Dominguez team scored, and a lot of the subs got to play a lot during the fourth quarter, including some guys who haven't seen action during the playoffs. By about midway through the fourth quarter, Dominguez led 60--28, and Brea had no chance of ever regrouping, so Russell Otis pulled all the starters, giving us a chance to take a look at the next generation of 5'-8 or 5'-9" Dominguez guards.
Both teams will continue their season this week in the State Tournament, which continues this Tuesday with the first round of the CIF Southern California Regionals, the qualifying tournament for the CIF State Championships.
