Division II-A bracket updated 03/05/00

Who: No. 1 Artesia (30-2) v. No. 2 Ocean View (28-3)

What: CIF Southern Section Division II-AA Championship

This was bad. . . for Ocean View that is. . . And actually, it was pretty ugly all the way around, as both teams played pretty sloppily. It's just that Ocean View played a sloppier game than Artesia did, and it took the Pioneers about two quarters to wake up and realize where they were. Despite a slow start, one in which the Pioneers only led by 9 at the end of the first half, 19-10, and then by "just" 15 at the half, the real onslaught didn't start until the third quarter, continuing the improved play from Artesia which started to take shape midway through the second quarter when they started hitting their jumpers and really turning it on. Artesia proved that it was the better team on this day, in this division, and they appear headed to a showdown with Dominguez in the State Regional tournament, which would be the third matchup of these two teams again this year. Dominguez has already beaten the Pioneers twice, once in the Best in the West in December at Long Beach State, and then again at the Nike Dream Classic at the Pyramid on January 17 of this year.

But on Saturday, the memorable run for Artesia came with Artesia's big shooter, sophomore Jon Steffansson nailing two jumpers, Franklin Matos getting a layup in traffic, and Amaury Fernandez jamming. But at the start, both teams were sloppy, and Artesia committed 25 turnovers to Ocean View's 29; Ocean View had 13 steals while Artesia had 14, so the balance from both teams was just plain sloppy play. Ocean View never really got on track. Torin Beeler, usually a tremendous shooter averaging about 17 ppg, only had 3 points before fouling out. Ryan Westbrook also normally a proficient scorer managed just 6 points and had 8 turnovers. Marques Crane managed 15 points, but he literally got not much help from anyone else. Artesia's Jack Martinez had 18 points and 5 rebouns whie Amary Fernandez finished with 20. But Fernandez didn't play error-free either, committing 4 turnovers. In addition to his 4 turnovers, Matos, Ryan Reyes and Andre Hazel all had 4 turnovers in the game, while Steffanson had 5. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. But even with all the turnovers, the margin of victory just demonstrated how dominant Artesia can really be when it puts its collective mind to it. Artesia took command by dominating the post and shutting down Ocean View's outside game. Ocean View hit only one of seven three-point shots.

Here's the box score, which probably says a lot more than we can say about this game, one which Ocean View wil quickly have to learn from as the State Regional tournament looms on the horizon.
