Several All-Star Games & Events Coming
Up In SoCal--(Mar. 21,  2000)

Those who know about basketball in the SoCal region know that the basketball "season" really never ends. . . . it takes a brief hiatus in August during the NCAA "dead" period  (and even for some, there are still camps and tournaments in August). . . . so the "season" really didn't end with the State Finals this past Friday and Saturday.

Today's Long Beach Press Telegram carried a small box on page B-3, reminding us of a just three of the many upcoming All-Star/Showcase events. . . this is just the tip of the iceberg as there will be 20 or so "All-Star" games taking place around the SoCal Region in the next month or so, before the "summer" season kicks off with more high school summer leagues and tournaments, and then the NCAA recruiting march gets going in July. . . ahh, summer, and the high price of gas, hotels, and hot, sticky gyms. . . .

Blue Chip Girls Shootout:

Saturday, March 25, 2000
UCLA Men's Gym
8:00 a.m. Registration
9:00 a.m. Game start time

This is really not an all-star event, but more of a recruiting showcase, at least that's what we're told since we've never been to the event.   It's held annually at UCLA (at least we know it was there last year) and promises to feature (or so we're told) some of the best underclass girls and a few of the top unsigned seniors as well.  We're not sure if the women's NCAA recruiting calendar is the same as the men's (actually we're pretty certain that it's different) but this is a "dead" weekend for the boys. . . so we're guessing that it's a "live" weekend for the women, although a lot of the top programs will still be at the women's NCAA tournament. . . Still, if you're interested in attending, cal 562-630-2491 or call Sports Cmaps Inc, at 610-446-3636.

The first Scholastic Hoops Jam last year was a great success, and this is one event that actually requires participants to have a successful grade point average.  Last year there were some excellent top student-athletes, including more than a few who had signed with D-I schools, and this year there will also be a number of top seniors participating, as well as top underclassmen.  Boys & Girls games.  Oh, they also had a really nice banquet last year preceding the games. . . .
