Spring Is Here:  Rockfish Schedules
& Rosters Released--(Mar. 1, 2000)

We just got word from Mark Mayemura and Dave Benezra about the Rockfish Spring League, which is in our humble opinion, the best spring teaching and exposure league of any at the high school level in SoCal.  There are other leagues (ARC, Slam N Jam) but none that conistently bring in good players from all over SoCal and get exposure like RSL.  The league is NCAA certified, which means that during the "open" weeks, you'll see a lot of college coaches coming and going.    And if you just want to watch some of the best players in SoCal, then you'll want to check out some of the games. The league will start this weekend and it will go four consecutive weekends during the month of March:  March 4-5, March 11-12, March 18-19 and March 25-26. After taking the Final Four Weekend off, they'll finish up with April 8-9, April 15-16.  And then it will be spring tournaments, high school summer leagues and July before you know it. . . .

All Rockfish Spring League games take place at LA City College, which is located on Vermont Avenue, just north of the Hollywood Freeway and just south of the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd and Vermont (so if you go past Santa Monica, you've gone too far).  Be sure to park either in a lot or bring a lot of quarters for the meters because the cops will ticket you on Saturdays and Sundays.  Consider yourselves warned.  Anyway, here's the schedule for this weekend:

Saturday, March 4

Belmont Shore vs. Orcas

10:30 am

Belmont Shore vs. IEBP I

12:00 pm

Orcas vs. Inland

1:30 pm

IEBP 1 vs. Inland

Sunday, March 5

9:00 am

Orcas vs. Tiger Sharks

10:30 am

IEBP 2 vs. Orcas

12:00 pm

Tiger Sharks vs. IEBP 1

1:30 pm

IEBP 2 vs. Hammerheads

3:00 pm

IEBP 1 vs. Barracudas

4:30 pm

Hammerheads vs. IASAA

6:00 pm

Barracudas vs. Marlins

7:30 pm

IASAA vs. Marlins

The rosters are another interesting thing.   A lot of the guys listed on these rosters may not show up for several weeks.   Some are still in the playoffs. Some are back east at prep schools.  Others will move from team to team and the rosters, at least those of the "in-house" Rockfish teams, may be adjusted and shifted around.   It's always fun to watch as the playoffs end and teams get eliminated as more and more guys show up each weekend.

In any event, here are the rosters which Mark and Dave sent us.  How many of the "outside" teams (i.e., Belmont, IEBP, Inland, etc) will actually have the guys they say they have is always an open question, still there will be some big-time players this spring.  We've listed the Rockfish "in-house" teams alphabetically (both by player and by team), and the others have the players listed alphabetically.

Also a note on the differences between RSL (the league) and the travel teams:  The teams shown below probably don't resemble what the spring and summer
