State Finals Recap: De La Salle Beats
Clovis West--(Mar. 20,  2000)

Concord De La Salle 47, Fresno Clovis West 46--Here's the really short version:  Junior guard Joe See made two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to give De La Salle (31-1) its first Division I title.  The Golden Eagles (39-3)   trailed from late in the first quarter, but went ahead 46-45, on two free throws by Chris Hernandez with 22.4 seconds left.  But then Joe See was fouled on a shot from the baseline after an inbound play to set up the game-winning free throws.  See, a junior point guard, hit both free throws and De La Salle won.

Now the longer version:

Clovis West, which finished with a state record-tying 39 victories in 42 games, was in foul trouble in this game from the very outset: Tyrone Jackson picked up his first foul 6 seconds into the game. He had two with 59.2 seconds left in the first quarter. Sophomore forward Charlie Rodriguez picked up his second foul with 5:16 left in the first half, and Andrew Awad was charged with his second less than 2 minutes later.  Rodriguez scored just five points as the Spartans collapsed on him, virtually eliminating him as an offensive threat, but he still managed eight rebounds. But De La Salle High School still managed to pull off the win through sheer determination, and in the process won its first California Interscholastic Federation Division I state title Saturday night, using two free throws by Joe See with 2.9 seconds remaining to beat Clovis West-Fresno 47-46 before more than 9,000 spectators at Arco Arena in Sacramento. The Spartans led most of the game, but then committed a number of turnovers in the final quarter to let Clovis back into the game, and in fact unitl that last 2.9 seconds, it looked as if Clovis had the title locked up. De La Salle took its biggest lead of the game with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter when Demetrius Williams drove in for a layup and a 39-28 cushion. Hernandez finished with 18 to lead Clovis West, and Jackson had 10, including a running jumper in the lane to cut De La Salle's lead to 43-42 with 3:02 remaining. Brown answered with a 15-foot jumper for De La Salle, but Jackson hit a follow basket underneath for a 45-44 difference.  But when it counted most, De La Salle got the two points they needed from Joe See.  Before See hit the game winning shots, it looked as those Clovis West had won, when 20 seconds earlier, Clovis West's Chris Hernandez hit both of his free throw attempts to give the Golden Eagles a 46-45 lead.   The Golden Eagles, ranked third in Cal-Hi Sports' state poll behind No. 2 De La Salle and Division II champion Dominguez, trailed for most of the game. Before Hernandez's late free throws, Clovis West's last lead was with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles trailed 39-28 late in the third quarter but worked their way back. Junior point guard Chris Hernandez, who left the game with a sprained left ankle midway through the second quarter and limped through most of the third, gave Clovis West its first lead since the first quarter on two free throws with 30.5 seconds left.  The Spartans secured the win when, after See's free throws, Clovis West's Tyrone Jackson threw the inbound pass wildly out of bounds near midcourt. See received De La Salle's ensuing inbound pass, blindly threw it up toward the basket to kill the final seconds and then got mobbed by his teammates and Allocco. The Spartans were in no mood to celebrate with 30.5 seconds remaining when Conor Famulener's pass to Charles Brown resulted in a turnover. Clovis West took advantage of that break when Hernandez drew a foul and went to the line for the go-ahead free throws. The final seconds resulted in wild series of plays.   See hit Kuhle with a pass for an open shot under the basket, but Kuhle missed with eight seconds remaining. Clovis West swatted the rebound out of bounds, giving De La Salle the ball and a chance for the win. Kuhle inbounded the ball to See at midcourt, and Joe dribbled into the lane and drew a foul. It wasn't a shooting foul and the Spartans once again got to inbound the ball with 4.3 seconds left, and trailing by one. This time, See got the inbound pass, got fouled by Tyrone Jackson and sank two free throws. See made only 2 of 6 field-goal attempts, but the offensive slack got picked up by Brown with 10 points, Kuhle with 9, and Matt Gutierrez with 6. After making the free throws Clovis West threw away the inbound pass, giving the ball back to the Spartans. See got the ball and heaved it backward over his head toward the basket as time expired, giving De La Salle its first state title and 26th consecutive victory in a 31-1 season.
