adidas Double Pump Spring Tourney:
AAB Basketball Roster--(Apr. 11,  2000)

Since we can't possibly hope to cover every player who participated this past weekend at the adidas Double pump Spring Tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills, we decided to do the next best thing:  Provide you with all of the rosters, and some selected player highlights, and, where possible, a team recap.

AAB was a new team created for this tournament and which listed Romeo Lagmay as the coach, but we were pretty sure we saw Ronald Ruffin's dad coaching (at least that's who we thought it was).  The team was composed of some guys we knew and others who we were really unfamiliar with.  Here's the roster:

Hannibal Thomas   6'-2" Jr. G/F Lincoln
Jamar Mimms 5'-10" Sr. PG Moreno Valley Valley View
Victor Jones 6'-0" Jr. PG Los Angeles
David Chew 5'-10" Sr. PG
Sidney Hampton 6'-4" Sr. G Valley View
Frank Segbefia 6-3" Jr. G/F Lincoln
Leroy Dawson 6'-1" Sr. PG Los Angeles
Duane Fields 6'-2" Jr. PG/SG Los Angeles
Kenneth Lindsey 6'-0" Sr. G/F Valley View
Ronald Ruffin 6'-5" Sr. G/F Chatsworth
Marcus Jones 6'-7" Sr. F Locke

Again, we didn't really get to watch all of these guys for three complete games, but we did closely watch a few of them for brief spans. . . .AAB (which was not the name on those ugly peach-colored jerseys) really had no big men to speak of besides Marcus Jones, but they did have more than a few guards we've seen before, including Leroy Dawson (6'-1" Sr. PG) who is, from what we hear, a 5th year senior. . . Leroy wasn't eligible to play at LA High this past season, but it's good to see that he's staying in shape and keeping his point guard skills up. . . We expect that he'll be attending a JUCO next season, and we've heard rumors that it will either be Alan Hancock College (along with Chris Davis (6'-7" Sr. PF) from Crenshaw, who is also likely to be a non-qualifier also and who played with H-Squad in this tournament) or some other local JC.     Likewise, Ronald Ruffin (6'-5" Sr. G/F) from Chatsworth is athletic, quick and can shoot out to about 15 feet, but he too had eligibility problems this year and we'd expect him to be a non-qualifier who will wind up at a JC or possibly prep school.   Mimms and Hampton played well, but we honestly didn't get too close a look at the rest of the guys on the team.  We're pretty certain that Frank Segbefia is the brother (or cousin?) of former Manual Arts player Brian Segbefia, who graduated two years ago after playing for the LA City Section Champions, and like Brian, Frank is quick and athletic and can shoot the ball well.

Unfortunately for AAB, they immediately dropped into the losers bracket, dropping their first game to the Oakland HotShots on Friday night 53-45. On Saturday morning, they won the second game by a single point 57-56 against a strong Utah Select team, which meant that they got to match up for their third game against Jeff Meadows' Arizona Slam team, and AAB beat some of the best players from Arizona who were not on the Pump N Run AZ All-Stars team, including guys like Brian Freeney. . . AAB won 63-52, ending AZ Slam's run in the tourney and sending them to the quarterfinals of the losers' bracket against Alleycats Red on Sunday morning.  Unfortunately for AAB, that was the end of the line as they lost 62-54.
