University of Portland Signs
Aussie Carmie Olowoyo--(Apr. 18, 2000)

While we were poking around yesterday trying to find out where some of the Pump N Run players, including especially Heath Bailey (6'-11" Sr. C) out of Beaverton,  had signed (turns out it was Portland State), we also checked out the University of Portland's website, and while there we discovered that the other Portland had picked up a big-time LOI from Carmie Olowoyo (6'-5" So. G), a transfer from Salt Lake City Community College (which also plays in the SWAC --the Scenic West Athletic Conference with the College of Southern Idaho, a school we wrote about yesterday).

According to our sources up in Portland, Carmie is a huge signing for the Pilots, a smooth and athletic wing player who can play the 2 or the 3, and who will immensely help improve the Pilots next season.  Carmie was also recruited by Denver, Portland State, and by Steve Aggers (both at Eastern Washington and at LMU), but chose Portland instead based in part on his recruitment and relationship with Pilots' head coach Rob Chavez and assistant coach Jason Levy.

Here's the official press release from the University of Portland on the signing, which actually took place last week:

Carmie Olowoyo is an outside shooting threat

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The University of Portland received a national letter-of-intent from 6-5 wing Carmie Olowoyo, men’s basketball coach Rob Chavez announced.

Olowoyo, a native of Perth, Australia, recently completed his sophomore season at Salt Lake Community College, where he was all-Scenic West Athletic Conference in leading SLCC to the conference regular season title.

Olowoyo joins three fall early signings for Portland - Casey Frandsen (6-3, G, Silver Lake, WA/Toutle Lake HS), Matt Towsley (6-11, C, Corvallis, OR/Crescent Valley HS), and Ghislain Sema (6-8, F, Nkongsamba, Cameroon/Treasure Valley CC), will join the Pilots in the fall of 2000.

“Carmie is an outstanding perimeter player,” said Chavez of Olowoyo, who hit 53 3-pointers last season at SLCC. “We’ve had our eye on Carmie for a couple of years. He’s an outstanding student who fits the profile of a University of Portland student.”  Olowoyo averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season, nailing 50.1% of his field goals and nearly 38% of 3-point shots.

While the University of Portland doesn't have any SoCal player signees yet, we know that they're working on several guys who have said that the University of Portland is interested in them, and we wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of guys from the LA area wind up there in the next couple of years.
