Aztecs Get Verbal From
Karlo Kovacic--(Apr. 12, 2000)
The San Diego Union Tribune is reporting this morning that San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher has received a verbal commitment from Modesto JC player Karlo Kovacic (6'-4" So. SG). Kovacic is expected to sign a letter of intent with San Diego State today, which also marks the first day of the late spring signing period.
Kovacic, an All-State JUCO selection, was also recruited by Pepperdine, UOP and St.Mary's. He's a prolific shooter, and this past season he led the state in three point shooting percentage (49.7%) hitting 118 out of 237 three-pointer attempts. In contrast, the U-T noted that last season only "three players attempted more than 50 threes for SDSU and none made more than 34 percent. The Aztecs shot 40 percent from the field and just 29 percent on threes."
The Union Tribune also speculated that there are at least two other verbals/LOI's on the way for SDSU in the next few weeks, and the others might include All-State selection Randy Holcomb (6'-8" So. F), who played this past season for Mike Miller at LACC. The U-T also reported that Deandre Moore (6'-0" So. PG) who left Vanderbilt after one season (his exit coincided with the departure of head coach Jan van Breda Kolf, who got the Pepperdine job and led them to a great showing this year at the Tournament), or Kevin Augustine (6'-2" Jr. PG), who left USC last season.
The Aztecs have already signed Chris Walton (6'-8" Sr. PF) from USDHS and Aerick Sanders (6'-9" Sr. F/C) from Gardena Serra HS, and with the available scholarships, it looks like San Diego may have as many as five more scholarships available, not including the signing of Kovacic.
